The tune is composed by Dòmhnall mòr Mac Cruimein, who is essentially the J. S. Bach of the Highland bagpipe. His brother Pàdraig caogach (Squitting Patrick) was murdered. Big Donald tracked the murderer down after a year to a village. He then burned down 18 houses in revenge and then composed the tune in honor of his brother. Big Donald died about 1640 to give you a time scale.
Now personally, I would rather we have an actual bagpipe to play to call the haggis.

I used to play in a pipe band in Colorado. When we were traveling to a Highland Games event, say in Salt Lake, we'd stop to stretch our legs and have a drink, etc. Sometimes a few of us would get the pipes out and play a few tunes, and if there were cows or even horses around, they would very often wander over to see just what the hell was going on. 😆
Oh, that reminds me. I used to go to a weeklong piping school in Estes Park. We'd practice outside and the Rocky Mountain elk in the area (they wander freely in town) would likewise come check out the chaos.
