#How would y'all do/redo the class system

Mule deer should stay at a class 6 it is fine they are much tankier and larger than whitetail
But some animals need a class up or a class down
I'm not sure mule deer are really big enough to justify the jump up
Whenever I look up their sizes, they're pretty close
Toughness, height and weight all plays into it muley can get pretty big compared to whitetails at minimum should be class 5 other than that class 6 fits
Cut back to 5 tiers for animals and guns, dividing animals by weight (under 10kg is class one and 10-25kg class 2 kind of thing)
Stop balancing the guns against each other like a PVP game and make them work for the tiers they're normally used for irl.
Look how Way of the Hunter divides their animals how their guns work. Its not perfect obviously, but it works better than class system we have.
I'd also see what's actually used on certain animals irl
My problem with that is that it's hard to know which guns are best for what unless you have the GitHub guide, especially with joules.
I'd ideally like something where you can make a load out for a map with very minimal fuss
.300 win mag is a general purpose rifle for deer, elk, black bear, and sheep here in Wyoming particularly for people who prefer just using one rifle.
Fact is, the vast majority of "deer rifles" work just as well on bigger and smaller game. I've downed elk and black bear with my .30-30 and the same ammo I used for feral pigs and goats back in Tennessee
OK, let me put it this way. Tons of rifle calibers use the same bullets.
.300 Mag, .30-06, .308, and .30-30 are all .308" diameter bullets in different shapes and weights.
They'll handle any big game in North America and what a person uses is mostly personal choice.
A .30-06 or .308 Winchester is the general jack of all trades.
Short range hunting or thick woodlands make the .30-30 the go to choice because its fast and compact with plenty of power.
.300 win mag is your long shooting gun, mountain to mountain work.
They'll handle any animal exactly the same its just what works where and how you hunt.
I'd change it for the ethical calibers system from Classic
See, incorporate this into it
What zeroing increments would you have for these? Because having more unique niches for weapons would help them stand out
200yds max for a .30-30, its not fast but it'll still kill your buck or black bear.
300yds for a .30-06 or .308, they have plenty of reach and power for pretty much anything so shoot where your most comfortable
500yds for the .300 is pretty reasonable because its made with long shots in mind.
But here, in a game with a max render of 450m?
Just do 200m as the basic line and call it a day. Unless you implement some way to set a custom zero instead of a random switch that blankets everything
Eh, I'd rather have unique zeroes for rifles to make them distinct
Also since we're talking about guns, give the rifle ammo different classes ffs
See, the thing is. It doesn't make too much of a difference.
My .300 win mag is zeroed at 200yds, it hits 2 inches high at 50 yards and 4 inches low at 400yds. Six inches in a y direction is still comfortably in a deers lungs.
That's understandable then, especially in the scope of a video game
Maybe an easier way to fix things would be to give animals a range in class like the weapons? A minimum ethical and maximum ethical class per animal?
Would give the weapons and animals a broader overlap making it easier for folks to use their weapon of choice.
A minimum caliber is the general guide for a lot of states, like .243 is the legal minimum for deer hunting in Tennessee and in Texas .270 is the minimum allowed for exotics. There's no real "maximum" caliber, just kinda what you feel like ruins to much meat or hurts to much to shoot
Was thinking more for smaller game, rabbits and ducks sorta thing for the maximums
Yeah, nothing stopping you from shooting a quail with a .500 S&W but you either shot get nothing for it or it should cost 2x its worth to tax it
Or be unable to tax it at all, you hit a quail with the 470 all you’re gonna have is feathers
Yeah, it should just say ruined and you get nothing out of it.
That or go Classic's route and set a fine for it
It would be funny tho
For me, Classic would be the most ideal route
But then, have something where you can build your loadout and then, in-game, compare it to the animals on the map. This means weapons, ammo, lures, etc.
Yeah only struggle for classic I’ve seen is for folks who don’t hunt and are new to the game, lotta spreadsheets around cause I guess it’s not clear in game (haven’t played for years though so I dont remember how classics stuff was set up)
Hence something in-game to match animals and ammo
This would be my preference.

There was a list of animals on each map and the ammo allowed for them
Actually, you know what?
Map select screen, under the description it lists a couple useful rifles/ammo types and calls for that specific map.
I shot a auodad with a .243 a few weeks ago on a hunting ranch and I had no problem?
(Yes it wasn’t real hunting but I was told to herd manage while I was whitetail hunting and so I got one, the owner of the ranch didn’t say anything and knew I was using a .243, a ethical, clean lung kill.)
Oh hold up, my bad. The .270 is the minimum on Kerr WMA for Gemsbok. Its not a statewide law
But most importantly, everything should be easy as sin for a noob to figure out.
Hence the suggested feature of something that can generate a list of calibers for each reserve based on your priority and what guns you have/want.
Like something that can look at your loadout and then tell you if it's lacking anywhere. So if I forgot a weapon that can kill class 9 animals, it'll tell me. It can also automatically fill your bag with all the needed callers, depending on space and what you have
Also, have at least as many loadout slots as there are maps so that I can switch to and from different ones in a snap
Though this feature should be able to be switched off if the player so chooses
I dont expect GAME to get reclassed at this point as much as I'd love an overhaul. But I do expect that EW should expand caliber ammo options. I've said it over & over again that Calibers should match Shotguns & Bows with 3 different options. Or at the very least match the Hudzik [Ball: 3-7] / [Minie: 4-8] (should be 4-9 with bison). In relation to a previous response classic has a list of calibers that can be used for the GAME listed in the codex which is fine but its congested. Personally, I'd follow UH's example over Class #'s. Meaning Game categories that is identified by an icon. & much like authentic ammo ratings they should be labeled by the icons with bullet weights & bullet types. I truly believe players should have the freedom & utility to hunt various game with their preferred caliber w/o needing 3-4 weapons & being forced to bc of class locks.
Its quite simple follow authentic hunting practices & prep accordingly. I do agree that every reserve should display their Game Rosters & should further specify the Game Category Icons to give players a general idea. But since were stuck with class #'s. The codex should have both the roster & #'d classes listed. As a UI change when you're selecting a reserve it should have the Class #'s in the top right of the reserves display. For ex. SP: Class [1-2], Scotland: Class [1-7] etc.
The hunter classic has the best class sistem. Because if you use unethical rifle you will receive zero money. But on another side all rifles are powerful. Even 243 can easy drop the mule.
personally I'd scrap the whole system as is because it's BS in my opinion.
I'd probably go for a system either like the system in Hunter Classic, that being each calibre has a checklist of animals for which it is ethical
or
A system like in WotH where the score of the animal isn't penalised based on calibre but you loose money for using too big or small a calibre under the title of "meat loss"
Frankly I'm just tired of CotW's arbitrary class system that stop one from using the firearms you want to use on the animals you do. It's escpecially annoying when I can't use a .375 H&H on a gemsbok or Wildebees for instance when I know IRL we use it on stuff as small as bushbuck (C3 size) with no problems
Exactly
But again, have something in-game as a guide so that the transition is smooth
For example, there can be a menu where you pick a map and then pick your favorite guns.
Then, it'll tell you what animals they cover
Do you know anyone who can make a mock UI
I think Class 5 is good enough. They’re really not that much tanker than a whitetail irl, they’re just larger on average. They still go down easily with the same calibers.
Moose need to be a class 9 those things are immortal even a heart shot still has them running can’t say the same for bison.
I’ll just say this about whitetail, my uncle had to shoot a whitetail buck seven times with a 30-06 before it stopped moving, 6/7 shots where a vital organ shot mind you.
Pretty damn tough.
i wouldn't redo it, I'd remove it in favor of a system like the one in classic
Moose just need to be less tough in game. They’re way tankier than they are IRL. Irl you wouldn’t see someone hunting moose with a .470 DB rifle. The biggest caliber you’d normally hunt them with would be .375 or maybe a .405.
yeah, i just use a 30-30
Love my 30-30ers!
there is no real need to hunt moose with a .300 mag, 7 mag, 338 mag, 375, 405 etc 30-30, 270, 308, 6.5 swede, 30-06, 7mm-08 are all optimal
Issue is,
Moose live in Grizzly territory for the most part and most guides will tell you you need something that can kill a Grizzly to hunt moose.
The animal itself is not that tough, its the bear you might meet that calls for a high caliber rifle
