This is a thread for discussing and giving feedback on the new Askiy Ridge Preserve in Alberta. Anyone else is more than welcome to share their opinions on the map here as well.

For me, my experience with this reserve has been mostly good so far. The snow effects are great, the new species are very nice, and the map's scenery and graphical quality is incredible. I think this map is truly a hunter's paradise. I especially love the way beavers were incorporated into the map as a species who actually have effects on the landscape. It all feels very realistic and believable.

However, it should surprise nobody that I feel like there are things that could have been done better. First, the animal choices. Now, I love all of the new species on this map, and even the old species. But walking around on this map, it just feels like something's missing. There's no Mountain Lions or Grizzly Bears in the mountain forests, no Canada Lynx prowling the boreal forests and stalking Snowshoe Hares, no Coyotes out on the prairie... the list goes on and on. And the Wolverine, an iconic species of the boreal forest that would have fit in perfectly in this snowy map, is nowhere to be found. That's a real shame, in my opinion, lots of missed opportunities there. Grizzly Bears are even mentioned multiple times in the story missions, but never show up on the map, which is even more odd.

There's plenty of other things that are also bothersome to me. Mostly small things, but they do feel weird. For example, each subregion of the map has maybe two sentences written about it in the description in the codex, and sometimes they give incorrect information that's clearly meant to describe a different subregion. At least tell us what each of their names mean! The descriptions we get for each one feel very vague and shallow.

I haven't fully explored every part of the map thoroughly, so these are just the strange things that I've come across so far. I will post more feedback as I play the map more.

#

if anyone else wants to share their own feedback about the new map, feel free to talk about anything you want to in here. I want this to be an open discussion where everyone can freely post whatever feedback or personal opinions they have when it comes to this map.

One thing I though is could we get a beaver call for the electronic caller. maybe it plays the sound a flowing water to attract the beavers , since they like to stop flowing water?

Personally, I’d take out mallards and swap them out for any number of species mentioned

This map is definitely a 9/10 in my books. I love the species on this map, even though Grizzly bears would’ve been cool. The story wasn’t bad, but not amazing either. All that’s bringing it down is the fact that we didn’t get grizzly bears. A 20 species map would’ve been epic, and as mentioned, Grizzlies are mentioned in the story quite often.

I also think it kind of sucks that wolves live all across the entire map. Can't go anywhere without having to be prepared for wolf attacks. That's a bit annoying if you just want to go for a nice chill hunt.

Definitely more so than their other maps, enough that I’m comfortable enough to just carry a few rifles and I’d be fine.

The reserve itself is really beautiful, it really captures Alberta's image. I also really like the map, it gives me almost a RDR vibe. The animals, from what I've seen, are well distributed for the most part, even if you roam far from water. Even though covered in snow, the biomes manage to feel diverse and unique enough.

My major problem with this map is the lack of iconic species, specially the Grizzly Bear, the Mountain Lion and the Coyote. As mentioned by many other people, grizzlies are mentioned in the story line, it makes no sense they aren't huntable. Mountain lions, in an Alberta winter map, are a must have, an, in my opinion, not adding them was a lazy decision by the devs, not wanting to remodel them and rework their behaviors/populations.

The beavers are very impressive for an old engine, and their mechanics feel very imersive and fun to just watch them chop down trees and carry sticks. Their models and dams feel very realistic and make the map feel more alive. Alongside the tiger, they are the best "main character species" (i.e gators for Mississipi, kangaroos for Emerald Coast) in the game.

The buildings, lodges and outposts feel very unique and realistic, I could imagine myself visiting them in real life. Really captures the national park-ish vibe.

Another issue I encounter is that, early in the morning, the snow is way too bright and eye-straining, something that doesn't happen in Medved Taiga. Another issue is that tracks, most noticeably blood, are covered in snow, making hunting with no clues more frustrating than it should be.

Overall, this map is a 9/10 for me. The reworks are great, the species (excluding mallards and the absence of the ones i mentioned) are great, the map looks amazing, the snow mechanic is really impressive. In my opinion, backfilling those 3 species (or at least a reworked Mountain Lion) would make it by far the best map in the game currently.

one thing that also bothers me is the fact that Pronghorn are in some pretty heavily forested parts of the map that really aren't good habitat for them. Realistically they should only be in the southeast corner in the prairies.

#

but then again SRP also has Pronghorn in a lot of forested areas, so that's not exactly a new issue. I just wish EW wouldn't keep making these same mistakes over and over again.

Seeing all these boxes of 9.3x74R makes me wish we had a less situational model. Preferably a bolt action.

And what’s with these crickets? I hear them everywhere! I it kinda ruins the eerie quietness of winter nights but that’s fairly minor.

#

I can't stand how the new pintail sounds like a mallard and the snow geese sound like Canada geese. I remember when they added those two species to the hunt classic and they didn't make that mistake, actually spent the time to get the right call. And don't get me started on the wing noise, sounds like a rag being flaped around. Anyone who has heard ducks in real life knows they all make a distinct whistling noise when they fly, and goose wings kinda have a vibrating sound to them.

I have sent it before and I will say it again I would’ve picked mountain lion, Coyote and grizzly bear 1000 times over pheasant and Mallard in my opinion neither of those species need to be on this map or at least as launch species backfills sure but not launch… all three species “Cougars, Grizzly Bears and Coyotes” are All overdue for a remodel…. And cougars are especially overdue for a massive overhaul, fixing rework because right now as we all know they are really bad. This could’ve been the perfect map to fix them but no. Hopefully all three do get backfilled down the line though.

iron bison
# sterile pelican This map is definitely a 9/10 in my books. I love the species on this map, even ...

Agreed and worst of all this could’ve been the perfect map to not only add all 3 “Mountain Lions, Grizzlies and Coyotes” Pumas/Mountain Lions but this could have been update to finally fix Pumas/Mountain Lions with an enormous overhaul Fixing rework… I go a bit more in the post I made so I won’t go too much in here, but basically give them “the tiger snow leopard treatment” lower population more stealthy and elusive, less likely to scream all the time and scare everything in sight ect. Plus, I would’ve loved to see some animal interactions with each other having grizzly bears mountain lions and gray wolves all having unique animations towards each other since all three are Apex predators.

#

I think some other interesting backfill animals could be bobcat, raccoon, Wild boar, Whitetailed Jackrabbit, Ptarmigan, Miriam Turkey and Red Fox much much further down the line, though they need a break Rn for existing species and brand new species “Canadian Lynx, Snowshoe Hare, Wolverine, American Badger, Swift Fox, Prairie Dog, Muskrat, Gray Squirrel and Pine Marten”

yeah I think Grizzlies and Mountain Lions are the two most important species that this map missed. There wouldn't even need to be very many of them. Maybe a permanent population of 8-10 Mountain Lions, make them about as rare as Snow Leopards on Sundarpatan. Just having the species on the map would be awesome. Maybe about 12 Grizzlies on the map as well. That's plenty.

Askiy feels like the "North American Revontuli", but a bit better! Huge compliment, it's a 8.5/10 map. Yet it annoys me with missed potential too 🤣

  1. I love the high # of new bird species, makes me always want to carry a Class 1 gun. Fills in gaps when there's no mammals around... look up or listen for a Grouse. Always something to shoot!

  2. The ratio of mammals:birds is WAY better than Revontuli. Give me a ton of fun mammals to hunt, yet enough new birds to be fun. Perfect ratio!

  3. But... AR misses out on predators. As others mentioned, you legit feel the lacking Grizzly Bear + Cougar reworks

  4. Coyote + Wolverine would've also made this the best small game map PERIOD... ugh

  5. One tiny gripe: the lakes are ringed with trees/brush. They're ok, but I wish a few more were more wide open. Missing out on long-range shooting and have to approach closer to get shots.

  6. Pheasant + Black Bear feel like only added to increase G1 count, so they're artificial. I understand they reside in Alberta, but Grizzly should've been priority #1 over Black Bear. Rather than cater to G1 grinders, replacing them with Wolverine + Grizzly would've made this map perhaps #1 overall.

However, kudos to the re-recorded Black Bear audio! They legit make me jump when they roar!

  1. Mallards... lame 🤣

Yet despite its missed potential, this is a very good "A-" grade. Excited to keep exploring, and I love revisiting Banff! (Visited as a kid and its' beauty is unsurpassed)

My thoughts on Askiy Ridge as a Canadian who has lived in Alberta my entire life

  1. While I still wish for a Canadian Arctic Reserve ( #1070045518002147458 ), seeing a map set in my home province was unexpected and welcome, and playing on the map reminds me of our "winters" (I feel like it snows earlier then the offical Winter Solstice)

  2. I am happy to see many species get a rework, especially the Bighorns. To me they always felt off

  3. I like the big game to small game ratio myself, and I especially love the Dusky Grouse and I will soon have waterfowl setups across the map

  4. I do feel like pheasants and mallards could have been species left off the roster in favour of other gamebirds found in Alberta like Sharp-tailed Grouse and Blue-winged Teal respectively

  5. I do like the referrencing to both the First Nations and Metis

  6. I also do like how one of the side missions ends up referrencing Frank Slide, a real life disaster in the Crowsnest Pass area of southern Alberta which demolished the mining down of Frank (I went there twice)

  7. I do agree with many that is was a missied opportunity to have grizzlies and mountain lions. Cougars are an animal many come to Alberta to hunt and if we can have Woodland Caribou, we could of had grizzlies, I will more get into that later.

  8. The world map means we could easily have 2 more Canadian Maps (Arctic & BC) alongside Southern Mexico and many more African and Asian Maps (They should move Vurhonga's dot a bit southwest to where Botswana actually is on the map though)

#

How Grizzly Bears and Cougars could work on Askiy Ridge, in my opinion

  • Grizzly Bears could be exclusive to the Riel Foothills and Daniels Path regions, and the Black Bears could be relegated to the Dumont Forest, Poitras Parkland and Dion Meadows
  • Cougars on the other hand could have a map-wide distribution but a smaller population with 3 to 4 Cougars in each region, amounting to about 15 to 20 cougars map wide
  • Both species could also come with some reworks but in the case of the Grizzly Bear I can wait for that to come with an Arctic Reserve (Alongside changes to the Caribou TruRACKS rework)
  • Cougars could also get a rework on a future South American map since they still live in most of their historic range on the continent

Will the Jämthund be the next dog in the new DLC?
Known for its ability to independently track and harass moose in the dense Scandinavian forests (löshund), its main skill allows it to pursue and keep the prey in place (ledhund), giving hunters the perfect opportunity to take the shot.
The dog alerts the hunter by barking, helping to accurately pinpoint the target's location.

I want the Jämthund to be my next dog this year.

I mean it is my favorite map still, but those species would make it even better

iron bison
# sterile pelican The odds of them doing that is 0.1% The fact that so many people are saying this...

Trust me it’s very Necessary…
Especially since the fact that both mountain lions and grizzly bears are not on the reserve, yet they’re both mentioned in the story missions. Grizzlies throughout and cougars at the very last mission, so what this “probably” means at least to me is that both species “Were” planned to be on the reserve, and they were also both probably gonna be getting remodeled and massive reworks…. And as we all know, cougars right now really need a massive overhaul Fixing rework…. However, I guess due to time constraints they couldn’t add them at launch so I think that they’re probably going to backfill them down the line as I know the Community does agree that not having Cougars and Grizzly Bears was a “HUGE” Missed Opportunity…. And you wanna know the best part… you don’t have to have a lot of cougars and grizzlies on the reserve you can have around 6-22 Cougars and 8-24 Grizzlies on it

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the rifle being disappointing. It's the reserve I haven't purchased the map. It's personal bias on my side but it's a fact the .30-30 should be hitting harder than the 7.62x39mm and 2-6 is an absolute wasted class range. It needs to be 3-7 or 3-8. It doesn't take much research at all to see it's in the wrong class range, you can get these on google

I absolutely love this map! I don't know what it is about it, but it feels even more "real" than other maps to me.
The snow crunching under your feet. Oh it is so nice.
The animal line up is ok.
Some opportunities were missed. But I can totally see why they didn't add grizzlies or cougars. They would've needed some major rework and there is only so many animals you can work on. They probably just didn't had the time to do more.
The reworked wolves are incredible. Just a tad too aggressive maybe?
The mallards and pheasants...eh..could've totally done without them. The constant quacking and honking in general of the waterfowl is something that needs to be worked on...Too loud, too often.
The cricket sounds at night, yeah. A bit weird.
The snow being super bright sometimes, in the morning. Not a fan.
Male elk making female warning sounds and female elk making male mating sounds...also not a fan of that.

But yeah, that is my 2 cents so far.

main coyote
# willow path I can't stand how the new pintail sounds like a mallard and the snow geese sound...

I’ve noticed this for the past few releases now. While we may have seen some massive visual improvements in CotW, the audio quality has dropped significantly.

I’ve noticed that with a lot of new animals that are added alongside a reserve, EW will recycle already existing audio despite being completely different from their vocalisations in real-life.

This along side female animals having identical calls to males and many species sharing a caller even when it realistically wouldn’t make sense, should be looked at by the devs in the future if they want the games quality to be consistent.

#

I have a few negatives with the release of Askiy Ridge aside from the questionable audio quality as of late.

I would have preferred a map that could finally introduce the long overdue dall sheep, and I agree that mountain lion and grizzly bears are sorely missing alongside a model rework.

However I think it’s pretty clear by now that there is a somewhat soft limit on the number of species EW can include on a single reserve. I don’t know if this is for performances sake or to avoid overcrowded reserves, but I have come to accept it by now.

I doubt this will change unless they spend more time in development creating significantly larger maps.

#

Despite being overdone, mallards and pheasants don’t bother me too much. Small game species don’t over crowd maps and it seems it is much easier to include more of them on a map than it is to include large game for what ever reason.

#

Askiy Ridge is now one of my favourite maps in CotW though. Simply for its stunning visuals and incredibly immersive map design. This is the first reserve that feels like it could be a real place since Medved Taiga.

Speaking of animals being in places where they don't belong, I was hunting in the mountains in the southwestern corner of the map recently. There's Ring-Necked Pheasants there... in the MOUNTAINS. Not just the foothills, but ON THE PEAKS of the mountains that are covered in forests. How ridiculous is that? Pheasants live in prairies in real life, not on high mountain peaks!

If you wanted to have an upland game bird in that area, why not put some White-Tailed Ptarmigans up there? That would be a much better, much more appropriate bird in that part of the map. Or even just put the Dusky Grouse in that area, which is already in some other parts of the map!

I've seen worse, in the same area as you towards the top of one of the mountains, I saw the trace of a beaver. So I don't see any mountain goats on the mountain peaks, no matter which ones, but I also see pheasants or beaver traces. I want the mountain goats on the mountains, not just on the sides. Otherwise it's a Layton Lake District 2.0. Otherwise, the map is really good apart from these little problems.

I really like this map it is a 7/10 I've really enjoyed the new species especially the pintails, snow geese and beavers but Alberta just feels like a weird choice you could've just had eastern BC and have had stone sheep, wolverin and more which wouldve made this map just way better mallard and pheasant are bad choices imo, Hungarian partridge and goldeneye would've fit way better imo I really enjoyed all the reworks, many parts of the river are very bushy and hard to hunt

dusky grouse hunting is great I enjoy how many open areas for runnings nd gunning there are and how much detail was out into the map and the outposts, the mountains feel fairly realistic, better then on Sundar although the high elevations lack ptarmigan and mountain goat

There’s another issue with the permanent elevated blinds: as shown in the video, the bullet hit the window frame. Even when I aimed well above it, the bullet dropped excessively. So, I haven't hardly been on Discord since this map came out - been too busy playing! I have some gripes, but this is by far my favorite map and I'm really enjoying my time on it.

My thoughts/observations/requests are in no particular order:

  1. Buff that dang .30-30, whether it's a total buff or more ammo options, I don't care.

  2. Woodland Caribou need an 8-12 drink time on this map. There really isn't anything else drinking at that time where the majority of them are located, and night hunting them - while sort of magical under the Northern Lights - is just not fun or feel sporting (predators, kangaroos, and pigs are another matter and ARE fun at night).

  3. Swap out wolves on the southeast quarter of the map with coyotes.

  4. We need a regular population of Snowshoe Hare, and a limited population of Canadian Lynx and Wolverines.

  5. We need limited populations of Mountain Lion (with Snow Leopard like mechanics) and Grizzlies.

  6. Maybe add beaver castor lure?

  7. Get the geese out of the mountains and concentrated more on the southeast side where it's a better fit.

  8. This may be the best map soundtrack out of all of them, but they missed out by not just going with the best of Saskatchewan's Colter Wall. 😂

  9. The Northern Lights never get old.

  10. Being able to open and close blind windows and turn on some of the wood stoves is just plain cool and a greatly appreciated feature.
