Welcome to Saseum Sanyang (사슴 사냥) Island, a paradise for animals like Siberian Roe Deer, Korean Water Deer and Sika Deer. While it is a hunting paradise, it does have its problems as wild boar often ravage the fields and the Sika Deer, which where brought here from Taiwan and Southern Japan, are now outcompeting the native roe deer and if thats not bad enough there are packs of feral dogs terrorizing the local village by menacing people and killing livestock. While I do understand your here to enjoy yourself we hope its not to much to ask for your help with culling problem animals.

Island Geography

  • It is in the same area size range as Salzwiesen Park, meaning that the problematic animals like sika deer, wild boar and water deer will feel quite abundant
  • In the west and southeast are two seperate salt marshes that are often a prime place to hunt birds like swan goose, Baikal teal, moorhen and snipe, and if you arrive at the right time you will find water deer grazing
  • In the middle is the local village, and lately they have been dealing with sika deer and wild boar feeding on their crops and packs of feral dogs killing their livestock. Is also where the main outpost is located
  • To the north are several mountains and grassy highland meadows where Siberian Roe Deer like to live. Its also a good place to hunt pheasant, quail and turtle dove
  • The woodland areas that exist in the central areas of the island are full of sika deer, wild boar, roe deer and water deer alongside hare and raccoon dog
  • The more heavily wooded forest are prime areas to hunt sika deer and forest dwelling species like raccoon dog, hazel grouse and quail

  • Eastern Spot-billed Duck
  • Mandarin Duck
  • Baikal Teal
  • Swan Goose

While there are familar with animals like Wild Boar, Raccoon Dog & Sika Deer, this island is also home to a few species that are new such as

  • Korean Hare
  • Korean Water Deer
  • Siberian Roe Deer

Also fun fact about the Sika Deer, apparently a good number of Sika Deer in South Korea came from Taiwan and parts of Japan and where originally brought over to be raised on deer farms. On some islands they got out and are now overpopulated

I would absolutely love this!

If I put a negative point, it is simply because of the dogs, I understand that they have become wild, but just, I have taken so much care of the dogs including one abandoned, that it would break my heart to chase them away, otherwise the rest suits me.

Agreed. I don't think most players would be on board with shooting dogs, even feral ones. The audio alone would put dog-lovers off.

I have heard that being the main reason a lot of players would be against feral cats being on the Australian map, and while it might be a tough topic feral dogs and feral cats are a major threat to wildlife across the globe and on this map the feral dogs threaten wildlife, livestock and people. Heck in Canada feral dogs are a serious problem in more remote communities and Indian Reservations when the dogs turn feral and gather into packs and at that point they have to go out and shoot them

Updated the map to include a few ponds

Yes, I know, where I am, dogs are not a problem, but it is rather the cows and horses that can be a danger. Then there are also dogs that give people rabies. I remember some stories when I was little about the subject that were on the main channel about dogs with rabies that bite people, so it is true that on the one hand they can be a source of conflict. But personally, I will still play it if the map is in the game and with these animals. But I would not chase any of the dogs.

I’m onboard with feral dogs being huntable, i love dogs just as the next person, though i think if this is supposed to be salzwiesen size i think we would need like a medium sized map, not as big as other dlc maps, just inbetween that range of salzwiesen and regular map size, mainly because there are bigger animals and considering dogs having to hunt you down, would make the map very crowded

A wild / Feral dog are really no difference than coyotes/dingo's, jackals, African wild dogs .... If they have turned feral and have become a nuisance they should be dealt with .....

Hunters like to classify themselves as environmentalist, ecologists and Land managers .... So put aside the idea that these are the same as pets ....

this seems like it would be a cool map, but the thought of shooting feral dogs... is a little bit awkward for me

#

something people have to remember is that any new species that comes to the game will (probably) be place-able in trophy lodges. It's gonna be very weird to walk into someone's trophy lodge and see a taxidermized dog or cat.

#

it's also just such a controversial thing that I don't think EW would ever go for it. It took them years to be okay with adding (most) endangered species to the game, I don't think we'll ever get them to add stuff like feral dogs and cats

Sika in South Korea are actually quite interesting. Manchurian sika are native to much of the Korean peninsula though have been extirpated in the South.

This occurred around the turn of the 19th century, coinciding with the Japanese occupation that also saw the extirpation of Siberian tigers, Amur leopards, and Manchurian wapiti in the southern peninsula (as well as a number of other species).

Manchurian sika on the mainland (as well as Manchurian wapiti) have survived in the northern provinces of North Korea, but for obvious reasons, it is difficult to monitor population there.

#

The sika now found in South Korea, on both the mainland and Jeju island where they don’t occur naturally, are all descended from domesticated Formosan sika or Japanese sika, imported for the velvet industry.

There are many places where they are found in the wild, and their populations have grown significantly. Though these examples are all escaped from velvet farms rather than reintroductions of the native Manchurian subspecies.

#

My partner is Korean and I’ve travelled there a number of times. I’ve also looked into hunting there quite a bit as Korean water deer have always interested me and the Siberian roe deer in Korea are some of the largest apparently, especially those on Jeju island. I can try to dig up some of the info I found if you would like.

All for this. This would make for a very unique experience, on top of a very beautiful map.

Hi @plain elm! Could you remove the second picture of your post? I would love for this to be the main thread for people who want a reserve in South Korea, but Discord is strict against photos of dead animals. We try to make sure people spoil tag real dead animal pics or post them in the #🥩︴irl-hunting channel to stay in line with their ToS.

You can delete a pic you posted by hovering over it and an icon like this should be in the upper-right. Thank you!
