There are many threads covering this topic talking about the possibility of missions or a limit of kills. My idea for a more balanced grind is:

Chance of a Great One rises continuously with every claimed harvest.

This percentage drops with a spawn of a GO.
EFFECT:
- not more (compared to just setting the spawn chance up) extremely short grinds
- less very long grinds
- Chance should increase, so an average grind is between 1000- 1500 kills, very unlikely it is 2000+.
Reason: grinds should not be about randomly spawning a GO, the rarest rarity in the game randomly while running around the map once, but it should ensure that the player gets to know the species and it's zones. He should be an "Expert Hunter" that knows his population.
After doing a successful 1000 Kills, this is assured. After that it is just waiting for the GO and no more skill needed.
