Wildlife in the Wild West
-Predators: wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, grizzly bears.
-Large herbivores: bison, elk, deer, pronghorn antelope.
-Small herbivores: rabbits, beavers, raccoons.
-Birds: eagles, crows, pheasants, wild turkeys. -
Horses – The Cowboy’s Main Transport
-Essential for cattle drives, hunting, and long-distance travel.
-Each cowboy had his own horse, often carefully trained for the job.
-Some horses were bred for speed, while others were used for endurance. -
Transporting Hunted Animals
-On horseback – small game was carried on saddles or in saddlebags.
-By rope – larger animals were dragged behind the horse.
-On the cowboy’s back – smaller animals were carried back manually. -
Dogs Used by Cowboys
-Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs – used for herding cattle.
-Bloodhounds – used for tracking thieves or wild animals.
-Mastiff-type guard dogs – protected livestock from wolves and predators.
-Terriers and hunting dogs – helped catch small game like rabbits.
