Welcome to Garnet Crest my idea for a Southern California reserve. I plan to make this a mix between multiple biomes in Southern Cali that host a variety of different species and to be a paradise for North American bird hunters from waterfowl to upland and much more!
Biomes: Dark Forest, Dry deserts, Marshes, Farmland, and Coasts

Credit to my friend Jokingbro for helping me with a couple ideas

Species list
California quail - class 1(new)
GoldenEye - class 1
American coot - class 1 (new)
American wigeon - class 1 (new)

It is an interesting choice to leave out the only species I’d personally want a California map for, Tule Elk

viral fern
#

My idea for this hypothetical California map is to be mainly farmland desert oasis small forest and marshes similar to Mississippi acres and salzwizen

#

looks cool

viral fern
#

Also was considering red fox and pheasant to add more g1s to spice up the map but I don't want to overbloat the species list

The issue I see with our US locations is alot of copy & paste over presenting exclusives that make a location special. Keep in mind fillers (Backfills) aren't bad if it fits but too many it'll take away from the shock & awe that makes it unique. That goes for EU reserves as well unfortunately. Disclaimer doesn't mean its not still fun but the community shifts have been really loud about it bc of the copy & past due to the lack of Newer Species.

glass sinew

#

I can’t even remember the last time Tule Elk were featured in a hunting game

tender oxide
#

CA is a great location but moving fwd on US reserves I'd like to see more exclusive species specific to that area

glass sinew
tender oxide
#

and I think CA have Blacktail dont they?

glass sinew

#

Make it so you can only use non lead projectiles too

tender oxide
tender oxide
# glass sinew They do have Blacktail. I would love a Blacktail G1. I 100 percent would sear...

See thats where I stand on US locations. Like I understand we want our home locations in - game but I really want locations that allows players to hunt our various species at ea. Location over every location having the same species. Like moose EW went nuts with locations for huntin moose. This isn't bad but when you do it with several species it takes away from new species that could've been added. Which were no strangers to EW missing out on opportunities.

tender oxide
#

Now as for the post itself its perfectly reasonable to have an SP inspired reserve although 3 [C:3-5] Medium game & 2 [C6-8] Large game leaves 12- 14 species for [C:1-2] Waterfowl, Upland, & Small Game. - Edit 10 [C:1-2] Game since SP has 15 species.

#

EW missed the mark on SP for C:3-5 for Roe, Fallow, & Boar w/o taking away from the birds and furbearers. Although I'm pretty confident Germany has more Upland Birds that could've been considered to further apply the pointers use as well. Again I like the reserve but I like to see where they could've improved.

viral fern
#

But I did the entire bigger species thing before on a different thread which I now abandoned and it only felt like it was pure repeats

But this new idea is me doing a re do with a better way to implement it

tender oxide
viral fern
#

Might try to squeeze those in if possible but still gonna axe some other species that I feel would be way better on other maps

tender oxide
tender oxide
viral fern
tender oxide
#

yea there tiny little guys

viral fern
#

Oh wait showing off the new species lol forgot to

tender oxide
#

I'd dock Grey Fox, skunk, & ground squirrels. If you're looking at marsh biomes Muskrats might be better

#

I had the same thought & replaced ground squirrels for Prairie dogs on my reserve.

viral fern
#

A mix of Marsh biomes agricultural farmland and rocky desert that's my current plan that's why foxes and ground squirrels are there (also a good way to add squirrels without a tree climbing mechanic) might give beavers the nuke and just replace them with muskrat

tender oxide
#

Marmots might be better...at least I believe Cali has them

viral fern
#

Not to my knowledge we don't may look into marmot populations but trying to not to go over the 20 species limit so I'm being careful with what I add

tender oxide
#

I know alot of ppl have been requesting them which is why I brought it up. I personally wouldn't mind ground squirrels, but they are tiny. Not trying to tell you how to post your reserve I'm just expressing my opinion 😅

viral fern
#

Honestly I like criticism and ideas from other people that's the entire point of the thread it's a community bringing ideas together

tender oxide
#

& I get the cap I pushed 20 on mine but with my predator update proposal it reduces their population to make room for more species within reason.....that is if the dev's approve it 😅

viral fern
#

Most of the species on mine are waterfowl aren't gonna be all over the map so I can probably squeeze in more land species

tender oxide
#

However looking back at the updated list at 21 with appropriate pop balance this is plenty fair imo.

#

Esp. with a 2/3 to Full size reserve this can work.

Garnet Crest - Southern California

viral fern
#

Now that I've introduced the new species let me show off potential new gear that could come with the map

#

As for callers I am starting off with the pheasant caller by mimicking the sounds made by a pheasant, most commonly its "greeting call," to attract nearby birds by simulating a familiar sound, which can then entice them to come closer or could be used as a way to get pheasants to give a away their position when they are hidden in dense brush

Effective range - 180-200 meters

#

And finally the goose flag lures a surprising thing that currently isn't in game(since the hunter classic already has them) could be a good addition to any goose hunters that are needing another way to bring geese a commonly used equipment for goose hunting all over

(Adds a separate goose flag for every separate goose species currently in game)

viral fern
#

Further work is on the way just trying to make a map and the G1 concept

In the meantime I will create ideas for multi mounts

viral fern
#

After some debating I have decided to remove the common raccoon and add pronghorn since I feel it is a more popular species in this game

And also replacing the white fronted goose with the puma because a bigger predator on this map would be better and I believe that we have enough waterfowl on this map

glad echo
#

cant lie never seen a raccoon where im at, just hordes of opossum

viral fern
glad echo

viral fern
#

I've fully finished with the map logo, map layout, and G1 concepts but I feel as if a more detailed introduction to the newer species would be better to get the point across so I'll be working on those

Just been busy with multiple things so I might pop in and out posting stuff in this thread but hopefully everything comes out nicely

California provides a more unique species roster and adds many requested species than any other USA map I was thinking other maps around the world could be done first before this but if they want to try another US map they can try California

Since I am unable to retrieve the concepts for the g1 I will just reveal my idea for it will likely draw this concepts again at some point but hope you enjoy it

Introducing the Great One Coyote
I am basing it on different folklore mainly Mexican and Aztec folklore/culture
Furs
Fabled Llorona (a ghostly white color with extra fluff with black or blue eyes)
Fabled Cabra (a dark gray or black color with mange and less fur and red or orange eyes)
Fabled Ahuizotl ( a grayish blue color with black eyes)
Fabled CuCuy (a ghostly gray color with blue eyes)
Fabled Catrina (similar to any Fabled skull or Fabled Glacier on past Great ones)
Fabled Lechuza ( a chocolate brown/orange color with bright orange eyes)
Fabled Cipactli (a grayish green color with yellow eyes)
Fabled Cream (this one is more to break the trend and to add a different color making a tan color with green eyes)

#

I am aware not many people will be on board with this choice but I believe the Coyote deserves it, they are an interesting species that could use alot of love

I did consider blacktail for a while and did have them on the roster at some point but I feel like they'd fit better on other maps mule deer are more common anyway

A remodel yes but a g1 should be saved for something else imo that could have more potential than just another deer as seen for my choice for the coyote and maybe something else still thinking about it when I made this thread

Regardless I am unable to change the original roster due to the fact I have lost the original account I started this thread on so I'd have to remake it and find a way to pin it

I'm totally down for a Coyote great one. That would be sweet. I just know how small the Blacktail deer home range is so i think EW should take any opportunity to include them on maps that would allow it. I enjoy hunting them and wish they had more maps. They could work with Mule deer as well. They could have Blacktail to the west of the map and Mule deer to the east. I understand you can't change anything. No worries 👍

Well this map is more appealing to grinders and small game hunters that was my entire goal to begin with the united states can still be had for new species we still got plenty of big game to hunt like bears, elk, and much more there's something for everyone you could have said the same thing about rev most of the new species literally were birds and it was still a well made and well liked map

warm vortex
# warm vortex

This was a good point by Fuzion why I still believe California can provide alot for the game

#

Sure bird and small game hunting is not for everyone but this isn't solely birds and small animals

My main goal with Garnet Crest is to show the community that you could do something well with another United States map not the slop that was New England Mountains but still I understand where you are coming from another US map may feel like "ughh again?" But eventually we will run out of locations to go to and I personally believe if they do another US map California is the way to go

But still I appreciate the feedback and shall consider it more

It seems like the wood duck is not the only returning species getting changed the northern pintail seems to be coming with askiy ridge 🥳so that will be changed on the species list

@hollow ember they are on the species roster I planned I'd love to see blacktail deer get a new map possibly a remodel as well

I had them renamed to be columbian blacktail deer due to the possibility of sitka blacktail being added, also seeing that the woodland caribou existing and with the currently in game grants caribou further gives ew a reason for a possible rename

With mule deer getting a rework I feel that it is best that EW revisits another deer in dire need of a change being the blacktail deer, with the change of having two types of caribou in game soon I believe the blacktail deer should be renamed to the Columbian Black tailed deer(Odocoileus Hemionus Columbianus) in this reserve blacktail would be residing in more forested and environments compared to the deserty environments of the mule deer

It seems to me they only remodel animals with the release of new dlc updates which now are twice a year, and the remodel being set in the current area for the dlcs. That being said, if pumas are to be reworked in the coming map, which map would it be? Wild boar needs a remodel too and it’s older so it’s more likely to get reworked before that’s why some people suggest Japan will be the next map, but idk work with me here please.

Roosevelts and Rockies are further up north I was basing this more on central and farther south in California like the Sacramento and Kern range but I made this a small map due to how many people do not want more US maps and due to the amount of smaller animals I stuck to the below 20 mark to not overload it like I did originally, California is a common waterfowl and bird location thats why I stuck with mostly birds on the roster but if I could re do this thread from the ground up (including the name) I would

And with what moosedragon said I tried to add the important and unique things that can make the map actually stand out instead of feeling rather repetitive

I like big maps with multiple biomes personally. The 3 different home ranges for Elk gives the perfect opportunity for multiple biomes.

I mean my list has 9 new animals. It could be a great map. Hell the map we just got only had like what 4 new animals?

It's your suggestion so you build it for your dream on what you want but I would like the map to cover a bigger area for my wants.

# wild isle yeah i saw that

I do feel that adding the mechanic will really spruce up existing & future reserves and species as a whole. But I have no issues with FP being a test reserve for it given the Game list. But I figured if I included the thread links to the main thread it would give the Dev's more incentive to release it since the last 2 releases had several threads answered when they designed them. Plus with it being presented this far out it shouldn't get rushed & will likely be a year or 2 to develop is my guess. All in all the US & Canada still have potential for new species & scenery to fill. With that said I would still expect other locations to be answered before hand.

warm vortex
tender oxide
# warm vortex Yeah US still has potential for reserves but sometimes EW needs to learn to take...

US wise I can see 6 potenrial locations and Canada still has ground to cover. I know ppl are fed up of US reserves but we do have multiple biomes and even more game to boot. Canada is similar but colder climate species are more relevant their as well. Now I'm not saying South America & Africa arent species or geography wise but given the community's expectations I doubt EW would release them till they've polished their development capabilities. Lets be honest they butcher either one of those reserves ppl would mob together with torches & pitch forks 🤣 Esp. after all these years.

#

Atleast with Frontier Park it would be pretty hard to mess that up but they'll need time to get the models, animations, and mechanics down to really pull it off. But what sells FP is the late 1800's theme that relies on horses being released along with a well put together Western Weapon Pack. Ofc theirs more when you include an Elk G1, Fur & European Mounts for lodges, Burrow Update, etc. It would be a bonus to get the steel range I included as well. The one thing I hope they do right is the Narrative I want it to tie with our existing Wardens like Doc & his boy did between Layton & NEM. So it should have depth that I'd assume would take 2-3 years to design given EW's work lately.

#

Besides given the Game list here theirs some species that would excel with the Burrow Update & would benefit if we had some tree dwelling mechanics to boot. For me to really sell this reserve would be 3 core animal mechanics. Burrow Update, Predator Update, & a Tree Dwellers update. Having bears mark/climb trees would be outstanding & this extends to puma/mtn lions, & squirrels just to name a few.

#

The tree dwellers update I really think will likely be 1st scene in the Amazon reserve. The Burrow update I can see FP being the 1st as well. The predator update is the wild card that could be applied at any given time. But its a theory & prediction nothing more since EW usually tends to keep ppl in the dark.

#

Another thing to bare in mind as well is after Tigers if EW released Africa 2.0 Game aggression would likely be high esp. with the Big 5 being accounted for that would make my day if they included Hyenas.

tender oxide
#

But the OP has a great concept for California imho. The illustration is good, species list is good, & I think the reserve layout would turn out nicely. Kind of like a Layton revived feel to it.

# tender oxide The Career Story, Species, & behavior/mechanics is what keeps me interested & of...

Yeah NEM was such a scandal for that, when i bought it i thought those species was new to that map then i found out all those species already existed on other maps, which is like how could they do such a thing? The map, don’t give me wrong, is my favorite map in the game but the fact that it has no uniqeness just makes me think of how disappointed players must’ve gotten when that map released. Please EW never again

tender oxide
# safe vine Yeah NEM was such a scandal for that, when i bought it i thought those species w...

I partly agree. I didn't mind some of the species being repeated but that doesn't excuse EW to not add new species that reside in that area. As I mentioned before some backfills are needed to complete the ecology. But imho I'd rather EW hold off on a backfill update till more species are added esp. in US locations. On the other hand I do wish EW would simply add new species just as they did with the African Lion but ofc with detail & textures as they would to newly added species. We wouldn't want to see a repeat to the African Lion model texture we have currently. Given back then it was fine but after 8yrs they took a big leap with reworks as well as map design. For me specifically though their narratives have fallen short esp. in depth like they used to. CotW does have a storyline but EW hasn't put much effort into it since EC. Nepal wasn't bad but it was really bland compared to the reserves at Launch up to NEM. Revontuli & Salzwiesen Park to me were tours not story progression maps like the main character went on vacation not as a hired hand. And AR the Warden was young, immature, and a bit self-absorbed to play a rather serious prank that put an enthusiasts life at risk given a blizzard was on its way. Now I dont mind mythical legends being part of a story but I wasn't happy that it was 70% of the reserves story.

safe vine
warm vortex
# safe vine Yeah storyline is basically thrown away at this point, and i don’t really think ...

Thats what im trying to make EW do here not have a repeat with NEM also showing the community theres still potential for another US map without constant repeats theres still alot of potential to explore biomes and species where you can't anywhere else or many other places

Trying to grow this further is difficult with all the wants for Africa 2 or other locations but the journey is worth it

I still try my best to put my heart and soul into this thread when I am able to because I am truly passionate about EW making this a true map

Behavior: nocturnal, possible burrowing mechanic #1281956469037858816 , but a spray mechanic that either damages the player, removes scent eliminator, or makes the player more noticeable through scent
Regions: Valle de La Luna, WillowFen Basin, Red fern hollow

With this as an example, if we were hypothetically to make a SoCal reserve, we would never steal one person's idea entirely. We would look for "do people want a SoCal reserve in general?" and use the general discussion people have around a SoCal reserve to help us understand what people would want out of a SoCal reserve.

#

If the feedback forums are to be useful, we can't have multiple threads about SoCal, some of them not even mentioning California in the title. We are not magicians, we need some sorting method. All your original ideas posted within a thread are considered. The main thread is never the most important, it's always only one person's "take".

The tule elk is an endemic subspecies of elk to California and with a interesting but great history in terms of conservation. Tule elk were almost brought to extinction but if it wasn't for the conservation efforts of a rancher in the 1870s and many other efforts for conservation they would've gone extinct. Tule elk are important species to the state, if EW makes this map i hope they give the tule elk justice and respect it deserves

With 2026 now here mute swans are now huntable year round in California, a huge win for the state and the removing of this invasive species and something I'd love to see shown in a hypothetical California Reserve for Cotw especially since we got the American Mink with Torr Nan Sithean

I gotta say, whoever names ducks is not very creative

I think we can keep specific names if they serve a purpose to distinguish the species like with the Fiji petrel or the Florida scrub jay but it shouldn't be used for species that have super wide ranges like the laysan Albatros for example, if the north Pacific albatross species all had descriptive names it would be even easier to know em

Just for fun, starting from the top left going clockwise is: the red-crested pochard (Netta rufina), the common pochard (Aythya ferina), the canvasback (Aythya valisineria), and the redhead/redhead duck (Aythya americana) for those who’re curious.
