#dogs 2nd skill utterly useless

is it a intentional game mechanic or are the mastery skills for dogs bugged?
i am attempting to train a bloodhound pointer and a pointer tracker but no matter which way i try the 2nd skill comes out almost useless. the bloodhound pointer just mooches around excruciatingly slowly and most often walks past any prey without even getting a scent and if it miraculously does it tends to spook anything it tracks before spotting. the pointer tracker is marginally better but is so annoying when it tracks by running off every 10 seconds and then "waits for owner" at which point it takes 12-15 seconds to reacquire the trail. i have not tried anything with the retriever yet but i do not hold out much hope seeing the other 2 breeds.

It's situational. I'm not going to bring my pointer on a waterfowl hunt, but he retrieves upland game well enough. One of my labs is pointing well, another one of my labs I'm currently training to blood trail as a secondary skill when I'm goose hunting in an otherwise big game country. My bloodhound I'm not even going to bother with the expert dog tracker. They're not going to perform as well as the dog who would primarily be doing that particular job.

The base dog, the first one you select, will have all of the trait options (for example, Loving vs Shortcut) that you chose while leveling up the dog. However, the second dog will only have the basic traits that the dog started with when it had zero traits selected.

That means the choice of which dog to make the primary base dog is very important. You have to consider the type of hunting you mainly do, and go from there.

However, I've found that having the Bloodhound tracker as the base dog, and the Pointer as the 2nd, still allows my Tracker to do the basic Pointer actions needed.
