The 7mm is GREAT until you have to track that moose or bison 5 miles so we could use a new general purpose rifle. A bit of a workhorse if you will. I'd like to suggest the .338 Federal as the inspiration for this new rifle.
The .338 F cartridge is based on the standard .308 cartridge already in game. The case is slightly changed and stretched to accept a .338 caliber bullet (typically on the lighter side, 200gr. Is the common bullet weight) and loaded with a faster burning propellent to increase velocity and effective range.
This cartridge was designed by a joint effort between the Federal Ammunition company and Sako firearms company as a general purpose big game cartridge. It has a good reputation for taking down whitetail deer with little meat loss and providing more than enough knockdown power for plains bison.
Consider this an improved 4-9 cartridge with better penetration than the 7mm against class 8 and 9 animals. The cost for this versatility is a heavier rifle and a stronger recoil. I figure since we're getting an Arctic map this year then the ideal rifle for this caliber is the Tikka T3x Arctic. It was designed specifically for operating in acrtic temperatures.
I admit, I'm not a fan of the stock color but I love the rifle itself
