I feel like drones with cameras would be awesome in COTW

With these drones you could get awesome pictures and find animals.
To make this balanced i recommend making it so the drone cant go too far from the player.
And if you get too close to animals they get scared and flee.

I've talked to people about this idea and they all loved it
I think content creators would love this for making thumbnails and more

The use of drones to find, chase or track animals on a hunting trip is not permitted and is illegal in almost all countries.
It is not a hunting tool.

I'm talking about hunting tools, they could add chainsaws, spiked bumpers for the ATV, deployable anti-aircraft batteries, anything is possible, but you won't see it in the game because they are not hunting tools and this is a hunting game.

In Kansas it is legal to use drones to scout for hunting. (Finding Need Zones quickly). In Delaware, Louisiana, Minnesota it is legal to use drones as long as you arent in State Wildlife areas. In South Carolina you can use a drone, except for game birds. In Rhode Island you are allowed to use drones for all aspects of hunting. In Pennsylvania there is legislation being proposed to allow for deer recovery. In Texas permits can be granted for predatory or nuisance species such as wild hogs. In Massachusetts, Hawaii and Iowa a drone can be uses as long as its not classified as an air craft, last but not least Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland and Oklahoma have no information posted on their states websites about it.

#

So 14/50 States (Possibly 15 soon) a drone can be used.

10 out of 50 states with 11 possible thanks to Pennsylvania proposing to allow them to be used for animal recovery. 1/5 is not exactly widespread, and Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, and Oklahoma are in a grey "undefined" area that likely leans towards illegal given the attitude of the majority of the country.

And no, I am not counting Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, and Oklahoma due to incomplete information preventing me from determining if they are for or against.

Edit: at that many of the states you listed have restrictions on drone usage. Pennsylvania would only allow them for use in animal recovery after the hunt and currently lists them as illegal. In South Carolina they cannot be used on game birds of any kind. In Texas they can only be used for predators and nuisance animals like invasive feral hogs and eurasian wild boar. Lastly, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Iowa only allow smaller short-range ones that cannot be considered aircraft, which severely hampers their range and usability.

If you want drones in a hunting game, there is this neat little game called Open Hunting XL on Steam, it takes a bit to get used to the shooting mechanics but on the easier difficulties you can use a drone

It interrupts too much of the gameplay loop imo. A major part of what makes the game enjoyable is walking around and discovering need zones by searching through your rifle scope or binoculars. If that becomes nullified for zone searching then it just becomes a killing simulator tbh. The animals in this game are much more stationary than IRL, and drone spotting would just cause problems for enjoyability because people would flock to the drones, use them for everything, and then just be really selective and not actually play the game as it was originally intended.

That's not to mention the potential issues the game engine could have with a flying vehicle that has a connected camera for the player to view and can be used to spot zones.

twin agate
#

The same thing could be argued for the electric caller. Instead of buying 103 (exaggerating) different callers, you could buy this single one. To some people that is interupting the gameplay loop because you dont have to prepare for what you want to hunt, but can just hunt anything on the fly,

This is whataboutism and entirely different. It doesn't fundamentally alter the use of and player interaction with a core game mechanic by making it radically easier to accomplish it in an entirely new way like drones would with zone scouting.

The E-caller just makes it more space convenient and allows for more loadout flexibility because it does the same exact thing as the manual callers but with less space. Of course, this comes at the expense of speed since it takes much more time to take out the E-caller, set it down in an optimal position, pull up the call list, select the desired species, move into a shooting position, and play the noise than it does to just go straight to the shooting position and call manually. The E-caller also has range disadvantages since it only works out to 200 meters in-game, which is lower than some big game calls that sit around 250 meters (like the buck grunt iirc) and the duck calls (which go out to 500m). At the same time it also has the benefit of being able to call two species simultaneously and prevent you from having to switch between callers, weapons, and binoculars while bringing in an animal.

Drones would not be that kind of tradeoff. Instead, they would just make on-foot scouting and ATV scouting obsolescent for anyone who decided to use them. It would probably entirely wipe the use of that one perk where claiming a lookout point unlocks nearby zones. It would fully take over as the new "meta" for scouting and basically powercreep a hunting game.

twin agate
#

Okay, but like I said it is the players choice to use the drone or not, Avalanche isn't holding your family hostage till you buy and use this hypothetical Drone DLC. They could make the drone have flaws, for example, you cant view the difficulty of an animal or something similar, either way you would still have to walk to that location to set up a grind spot or hunt there, you are still traveling through the reserve, just a bit quicker. Bottom-line, if you want to on foot scout, you can, if you want to use an atv, you can. If I want to use a drone, I should be able to.

You’ll continue to reply but you lack a concise and coherent statement, I’m getting second hand embarrassment. Why would you want MORE bugs

I should also clarify that I'm not saying that i think they should add x thing because it will create bugs. My argument is that adding anything will create bugs and that it is just part of the game, and should be taken with a grain of salt as there are other ways to avoid them such as not using this hypothetical drone and them having a setting where it can be disabled in multiplayer.

# twin agate I'm just pointing out that you are arguing against this hypothetical drone. But ...

No, because like 6 years ago when the ATV was added we didn't know the game-breaking potential of bugs that came with vehicles being added to this game.

Since ATVs vehicles as a whole have been consistently at the bottom of the list for requested features with the only novel form of transportation people consistently request being horses.

This, of course, is because ATVs caused so many problems and are still often unejoyable due to slippery tires with little traction, severe understeer, a low top speed, inconsistent acceleration, and horrifically bad torque. Not only did they damn near break the game at their launch and several times after, they still have issues to this day and work poorly even when they function properly.

Here's a serious question that as far as I've seen, you have not come up with a clear answer for. How do you think this hypothetical drone feature would actually improve the game? As far as I can tell, all it would do is make it easier to find animals... which is already pretty easy. Just go walk around and go to water sources and see what's drinking there. It's not rocket science lol.

Drones would be a waste of time to develop because they wouldn't dramatically improve gameplay while also taking a massive amount of time away from things that are actually worthwhile to develop. Therefore, it's not worth the trouble for EW to develop them.

twin agate

The amount of time it would take them to add working drones would take away time that would be much better spent improving existing maps, adding new ones, potentially adding new weapons and trophy lodges and great ones, etc etc. You get the picture.

I think walking around a map for 3 hours looking for need zones is boring. I work a full-time job and my time is limited on this game.

I could theoretically half the time needed to find those zones. Also who said it had to be a vehicle or even controlled? For all we know, they could make it an automatic thing where you throw it out, and it just flys around, pining need zones on your map as your hunting in the area.

well if you work a full time job and your time is limited, that doesn't mean that the game needs to change in order to address your issue. It just means that you have less time to play the game, so you're not gonna be able to make as much progress. That's how most games work. If you want a game where you can just boot it up and shoot some animals, there's plenty of games that you can play that are like that. This isn't really a game like that.

knotty pasture
#

There’s always Big Buck Hunter HD.

naive timber
#

Also I don't think drones would really solve that problem anyway. It would still take time to find animals with a drone, and even after you find them with it, you still have to sneak up on them and take time to make a good shot. At best, drones would be another gimmick, not a massive game changer that you seem to think that they would be.

#

a better way to make it easier to find animals would be to design future maps so that animals would spend more time in open areas so you can see them from farther away. But obviously not all maps can be based on a wide open grassland or desert with no cover for animals to hide in, that would also get boring quick, so there's really no foolproof way to address your concerns just because of the way that the game works.

twin agate
#

I'm just saying, to you, it may seem like a waste of time to add drones, to me it isn't, i think there could be a good way to implement them. QOL improvements in my opinion are never bad. If it even saves me an hour then its cool. If you dont like the content that they realease then dont buy it. For example i think some of the gun packs they released are just slop and that they release the same thing with a little tweak just to get money. I think the gun skins you can buy are slop. Am I going to demand that people shouldn't use those guns? No, you play how you want to play. But I would hope people respect how i want to play. If that's using a drone to find need zones or whatever it does then that should be fine. I personally think they need to focus on something a bit better. These aren't more so concerns and simply just ideas on how new content that isn't just a gun could be added. I share my thoughts. In my opinion fixing old animal models are a waste of time, and should be very low on the chopping block, i think that they should add cooler things to hunt rather then another deer or duck, drones arent even that high on my list of wants, im just arguing that they could be a great addition to the game.

naive timber
#

you also have to remember that what you're asking for would be highly expensive in terms of the time it takes to develop it. Combine that with the fact that it's generally frowned upon for hunting IRL, and it's just really not a very great idea.

visual belfry
twin agate
naive timber
# twin agate Sorry i mistyped that, i meant fixing old models

it is the case though that we have tons of animals in the game that could look much better. Like, have you seen the Caribou in the game? They're just really awkward and they look bad. If you don't mind that, fine I guess. But I'd much rather have the existing animals in the game look as good as they can than to have a drone added to the game that I'm probably not going to use anyway.

I have like 440K and barely anything to spend it on except ammo and tents.

naive timber

I believe that any hunting game has three major elements that matter the most to making the game a "good" hunting game: animals, environments, and weapons. Those are really the meat and potatoes of the game. Anything else is extra. What is a hunting game about? Hunting animals, in an environment, with a weapon! If the animals look like a heaping pile of garbage, of course I want them to be improved, because they are an essential element of the game.

twin agate
naive timber
#

while drones might be an interesting little feature, I think most of the fun I'd get out of them would be crashing them into things (which is ironically the most fun thing to do with the one vehicle we already have in the game), or using them to get cool screenshots - but a "photo mode" like what you have in Way of The Hunter would probably be a better way to take screenshots anyway. I don't see myself actively using a drone to actively look for animals, that takes away some of the fun of hunting imo.

twin agate
naive timber
#

I mean, that would be fun too I guess! although at that point it's not really something you can call "hunting" lol

late pond
twin agate

naive timber

maybe once we have all of the other stuff in the game that I really want to see, maybe then I'd be okay with adding drones, as a "just for the heck of it" sort of thing. Until then, I want EW to focus on the things that are more important to me, like weapons, animals and new maps, and hopefully a trophy lodge update too.

#

and I think that a majority of players would agree with me. I don't think little gimmicky things like drones are something that EW should be using their time for at this point in the game's lifetime.

#

but to each their own I guess!

twin agate
visual belfry
#

I wouldn't be too upset if drones never got added to the game, I would honestly rather see something like fishing or falconry in a hunting game since they fit a fair bit better in a hunting game then drones, especially since falconry is a form of hunting, but that is simply my opinion

twin agate
naive timber
#

I think it would be a much more fun feature than drones

twin agate
#

I suggested that they add some really small game that can only be harvested with the falcon. Or maybe a new style of map that focuses on falconry

mossy crater
twin agate
#

Another good animal to add as a hunting companion could be a ferret. They are used in Rabbit Hunting.

late pond
#

The problem with falconry is the implementation. It'd either act like a retriever to retrieve/kill prey or be controlled by the player after release. And both have their problems

twin agate
#

A big problem is the fact that a lot of people seem to be focusing on the problems of new and exciting content and not the fact that its something that breathes life into the game. I think throwing a bird at a squirrel is 10000% cooler than a rifle.

late pond
visual belfry
#

Yeah, I do think that things like falconry, fishing, boats and horses could be features for a future TheHunter title (Or maybe call it the Outdoorsman Call of the Wild)

naive timber
twin agate
#

It would give a use for those white birds that you can shoot but they aren't harvestable

#

The only problem i foresee is that there wouldn't be a good way to pass harvest check for people without the dlc if they put new creatures on old maps. Which is why i recommended a special map for the dlc as a whole.

naive timber

I'm not saying I wouldn't support falconry though, and a falconry map would be really cool too

In relation to drone use in-game the only use that I would find it appropriate is an added photo feature. IF it was introduced it would likely tie into the narrative in the quest storyline. A good example was trail cams on I believe SRP & Nepal. Now I'm all for new gear & features however I can easily see Drone use being abused heavily without a distance & elevation cap but on the other hand. I can see this feature being applied to taking photos with the additional feature being applied to the camera as well with photo memory saves to put in your lodge as well as photo quests within lets say a 30x30m hover radius with a 3x7 power zoom? This would be a great addition to those who love taking nature photos as well as Trophy Shots as the plus side. On the bad side if a limit isn't applied it will most defn. be abused to search for game in general as well as flight mechanics being wonky & of course game crashing bugs.

But overall in terms of adding drones its a 👎 for me only because I feel it has more cons than pros in the titles current state. If EW utilizes it with limited use & range for photos only & the game is stable, then I would'nt mind it being an option. If nothing else its a thought for a future title.

Yeah, I generally agree with that. My point is that legality and realism as an argument against additions to a game seem weak when there are already a lot of laws being overlooked in the game depending on where you live. I don't remember having to get a license to start with for example. I don't see an annual limit on kills and you don't need to buy tags etc. I saw someone yesterday saying they kill 1500 Reds in an hour or something...? Where I live, guns are almost entirely banned and almost all hunting is illegal and basically frowned upon by the vast majority of the public, yet I still love playing this game.

At the end of the day it is a game, however Game mechanics & authenticity to a limited degree can go hand & hand. As much as I'd love nothing more than a realistic hunting game that has the investment & coding applied to be nearly identical to the real deal it'll likely never come to pass due to limitations whether its platform, financial, & staff. In EW's case small studio, limited staff, & they are using a custom engine they developed over a AAA studio using Unreal 5 or Frostbite with a flagship corp. CotW is evolving slowly to authenticity as EW intended bc the team is getting used to the engine and its limits. Where at launch it was a steppingstone. However, given Jaxy's reply this title has lots of life left with years of content. Which means they are going to rework mechanics & content from the ground up from scratch to add new features to keep player interest giving life or rebirth to the game from where it started. Its also community driven & thats good business tactics listening to feedback. However same is true that not everything will be applied & the company has a goal & will most likely not accept ideas if it doesn't line up to their vision.

echo widget
#

Indeed.
Yeah, I mean from the stand-point of salable DLC, drones and that type of added functionality are not that dissimilar to dogs imo. Maybe one of the dogs could be upgraded to sniff out zones?
