#New player: guidance is terrible!

Just had to have the most annoying conversation with people (the conversation was annoying, not the people), all because the game's tutorial is broken. When you start the game there is map selection, you can choose the start maps.

Brilliant... thought I, you can have a first experience and tutorial on a range of maps.

Went through on this one level where the radioguy was getting me to check cabins, then walk across the woods, mark a tree with an X, then collect some samples by a river. All very nice, then suddenly theres a mission to collect animal droppings and theres no marker for where to go, and the game hasn't explained tracking, droppings, hunting or anything. Turns out from conversations (see here #🦌︴help-and-tips message, and read downwards) that the tutorial is on a particular level, and I just wasted a lot of time because the game doesn't confirm it. Apparently I was on a DLC level? but there was no warning that the level I was selecting wasn't for new people.

Please add a warning on the main menu for new players to state they are attempting to start a non-tutorial map, which would save a ton of confusion!

This is interesting—I agree that new player onboarding is very important. I was able to convince my girlfriend to pick up cotw and if I hadn’t been there to teach her just about everything I know, she would’ve gotten frustrated and uninstalled. I think there should be a preliminary tutorial that maybe has some decent ‘starter kit’ rewards, and is not attached to any single map but is instead clearly designated and labeled as a tutorial/practice area.

There are a few things that I think are more important to teach new players than others:

Vital Organs and how to target them correctly

Ammunition types, ballistics basics (nothing more in detail than the fact that bullets take time to travel to their target and that gravity causes the bullet to drop over given distances)

Hunting pressure, hunting blinds, callers, decoys

Player visibility and noise, spooking animals

I suppose at least they should keep the "DLC" tag in the corner on the map selection for the folks who buy a bundle and aren't aware that only the first two reserves are part of the base game.

The game tutorial is actually on the maps that come with the base game ... If you start with a dlc you will get confused ...

I would also say that the noise system is quite frankly peeing me off. I can't get many kills because I can't see most things before they spook. I know different bushes affect noise as does speed etc. But theres not a chance in hell for me to get within vision range most of the time, they are spooking and running away before I every know I am close, usually from 150-250m so I have no idea where they are.

Game really would benefit from a easier difficulty setting for newer/casual gamers. I think I am probably about done with this. Would love to like it but it's just too hard, and players either have to play it on hardcore difficulty or not at all. At least for single player this should be possible. Just make the spook-a-biliy, especially from noise, much less (at least 50% what it is now) and an enjoyable game for all.

A more relaxed mode would allow people to pick up the basics without getting so frustrated they maybe just quit playing. I wasted 2-3 hours the other day chasing a kevlar skinned moose that I had to give up on, and today the same amount of time due to pumas that kept despawning and just not leaving frequent enough tracks. This itself demotivates a new player a lot from even wanting to play the game. Probably getting 100 things wrong, but if the game isnt explaining precisely how to avoid spooking, how can I possibly stop doing it?

This is easily the easiest game I’ve ever played…

All you gotta do is make sure to not run and watch your scent….

When I started this game back in the day, I went for a non-dlc-map to start with, since I expected to get a tutorial there. In most games you wouldn't start off with the dlcs... So yeah,... maybe it should be blocked to enter dlc maps before completing the tutorial on layton or hirschfelden

Yes as you level up in skill you will be harder for animals to spot, hear and smell ... Especially pay attention to wind direction and use cover scent ... This is not a mobile app and your not going to start out killing everything right away ....

Once you learn how things work you wont have a problem getting kills ....
