On salzwiesen, I just shot a level 5 greylag out of the air, and it flew out of the boundary of the reserve and died out there. I couldn't claim a potential diamond because the retriever won't run out of the reserve to grab it and I couldn't get to it before getting respawned for leaving the reserve.
