#Tutaki Estate (New Zealand Small Map)

With the release of Salzwiesen Park this opens the door for more smaller maps, including in already visited locations but seeing another side of them. As a NZder myself, I would love to see some more of New Zealands game birds represented in the game, and while I do like Te Awaroa it is already fairly full with its current roster (but it certainly needs Tahr still!). I see the map as a mix of iconic NZ farmland, wetlands and native lowland bush, rather than the more coastal and mountainous environment of Te Awaroa... One of the meanings of the word "tutaki" is to encounter, or to meet. So lets meet some of the species I had in mind for a smaller NZ map!

Possible returning species:
Mallard
Ringneck Pheasant
Bobwhite Quail
Canada Goose
European Rabbit
European Hare
Merriam Turkey
Greylag Goose

Possible new species:
California quail
Chukar
Black Swan
Cape Barren Goose
Paradise Shelduck
Australasian Shoveler
Grey Duck
Muscovy Duck (domestic source)
Pukeko/Australasian swamphen
Indian Peafowl
Masked Lapwing/Spur-winged Plover
Helmeted Gunieafowl (domestic source)
Dama Wallaby
Feral Cat
Ferret
Brushtail Possum

If we broke the small game only thing, you could add perhaps only one of feral goats or pigs, various deer or even a new species in feral sheep which can get some pretty impressive horns.

Protected ducks that could be added: Grey and Brown Teal, New Zealand Scaup. Blue Duck/Whio would not be suitable for the map.

All thoughts and additions are welcome 🙂

Important addition 🙂

This is what Te Awaroa should have been

cloud canyon
#

maybe a flatter area of mostly wetland where you find most of the waterfowl, then transition into gentle rolling hills of open grass with clumps of forest scattered around, perhaps with the odd lake/pond/dam as most farms have a few of those

grand tiger
#

I'm guessing this map is on the North Island? I only ask because I went ahead to look into the Dama Wallaby in New Zealand and they seem to be more common on the North Island alongside Parma Wallaby (which are a bit smaller then dama wallaby)

cloud canyon
#

the landscape would def be more north island inspired ( as te is more south island) but that doesnt limit species, we already have precedent as TA has chamois (only in the south) with sika (only in the north) already

grand tiger
#

Then I have a weird one to add to the list: Masked Lapwing, also known as Spur-winged Plovers in New Zealand. Apparently these are fair game for hunters in New Zealand and I guess at one point they were protected but can now be hunted and they introduced themselves to New Zealand from Australia

cloud canyon
#

Yes they kind of come under the same vein as Australian Magpie where I think they are mostly shot for just being a nuisance rather than going out to hunt them on purpose or because they are a major pest

#

i dont know if we want to inflict their alarm call sound on cotw players though LOL its very obnoxious but it would be funny if they could implement a swooping behaviour, like how capercaillie will attack the player

May I suggest new Zealand scaup and brown teal, they both have fairly big populations on both major islands

cloud canyon

#

In Te Awaroa, I realized that mallards are everywhere, and they don’t make the map special or unique.

cloud canyon
#

Scanning the non-protected list we can also safely add Cape Barren Geese, Guineafowl and Muscovy Duck to the list.

cloud canyon
#

If we had to meet Salzweisens animal count of 15 total I think my personal list would be:

  1. Paradise Shelduck (Class 1)
  2. Australasian Shoveler (Class 1)
  3. Grey Duck (Class 1)
  4. Muscovy Duck (Class 1)
  5. NZ Scaup (Class 1)
  6. Black Swan (Class 1)
  7. Pukeko (Class 1)
  8. Indian Peafowl (Class 1)
  9. California Quail (Class 1)
  10. Chukar (Class 1)
  11. Ringneck Pheasant (Class 1)
  12. Feral Sheep (Class 3)
  13. Dama Wallaby (Class 2)
  14. Feral Cat (Class 2)
  15. Brushtail Possum (Class 2)

If a class 3 could not be added swap the sheep out for euro hare or Guineafowl. If keeping strictly to legal species the scaup could also be replaced

cloud canyon
#

I would love suggestions for a new weapon to go with the map too, as I am not sure what niches we are missing from the shotgun or small game pool

cloud canyon
#

Totally get it and I don’t know if the devs would ever add them though personally I don’t see how it’s any worse than shooting a tiger or snow leopard. Or the suggestions for dingo or small African cats such as serval. They are a commonly hunted major pest in NZ and Australia, growing bigger than your average pet cat.

Them you just got some kitty stunning out and about ¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

If we in theory do need to stick to that rule my other swap for mallard would probably be either ferret or Guineafowl

#

I mean if we go beyond 15 species I’d want all the possible new ones haha

#

If we included the illegal species give me one of the teals or scaup any day over mallard

Don't forget to mention that they like to stand still when they're scared. They only move when they feel like they're in danger. That may be when they're injured, you shot the tree missing them, or they're not somewhere they're meant to be such as a house or hay shed.

I'd rather have no possums than possums that don't behave properly.

These videos give a good look at what hunting them is like.

If the developers do this on a standard map with all these new species, along with returning species, it would be a New Zealand-inspired Revolunti Coast. I’m sure it would be a success. There are too many species for a small map.

I know with my UAE Reserve ( #1316678282464333834 ) I have 20 species listed with 5 of them being big game animals. Some species are rare (in a manner similar to tigers & snow leopards on Sundarpatan) and other species have a limited distribution (On my UAE Reserve the Arabian Tahr, Rock Hyrax and Chukar are limited to one corner of the map), and on maps like Revontouli and Sundarpatan, species are able to fit thanks to inhabiting specific areas of the map

you are talking about extremely culturally significant, non-game type animals, two of which have populations of roughly 500 and 200 respectively... putting kiwi, takahe or kakapo in the game makes zero sense even compared to tigers or even compared to the currently protected ducks listed in this thread, and would probably get the game boycotted in nz

Time to revive this idea, if we do get a second New Zealand Map I could see it being more focused on birds and small game animals like Paradise Shelduck, Pukeko, California Quail, Brush-tailed Possum and Wallaby with some potential big game like the Arapawa Sheep

We already have a map set in the Southern Alps of the South Island, so I think a map like this suggestion set in the North Island would be pretty cool.

I personally think a setting based on the Bay of Plenty would be the best fit, they have great duck hunting and some of the best upland bird hunting in NZ. Much of kiwihounds original list would fit on this map, though there are maybe one or two species I’d personally drop.

It is also the only location where rusa are found, and one of the two locations for sambar, so both would make sense on this map if big game were to be included. If not the Bay of Plenty is where dama wallabies can be hunted which would be a great addition and is pretty famous for its peafowl hunting.

As sika are already present on Te Awaroa I think you could argue another mixed North and South Island reserve would be fair.

But if EW were to create a more focused reserve in the same vein as Salzwiesen, which is set very specifically in Schleswig-Holstein, I think a Bay of Plenty reserve would be a perfect fit.

There would be a lot of overlap, but you could include the Rotorua lakes region in the West for waterfowl, mixed farmland for pūkeko, turkeys, and peafowl in the North, the Kaingaroa forest (exotic pine plantations) in the south for pheasant as well as brown and California quail, and Te Urewera in the East that would be fitting for large game if they were added.
