I KNOW THE POLL HASN’T COMPLETED YET. This is only for the votes so far and to help convince you guys that the wolf is the ani Al that needs more fur variety (AND A MODEL UPDATE).

First of all, Grey Wolves range from grey, dark grey, white, black, and brown with usually white/lighter underbellies and black ear tips, shoulder patches and tail tips.

The current “rare” variants honestly REALLY annoy me because in the wild they aren’t rare whatsoever.

If they could update the rare furs to be wayyyyyyyyyyy more unique, and add these extra common furs as well, that would be AMAZING.

Examples; send yours below!

-Heartface (brown wolf with darker points; face, legs, tail)

-Masked (all grey with white face, like the picture of the last wolf)

-Red Brown (updated to be similar to the third-last photo)

ALSO.

The Yellowstone Wolf Reintroduction has a handful of famous wolves with unique coats that the Developers could base rares coats off of. I cant find a good link to photos, but it would be really really interesting!!!

Crossing my fingers for wolf and that they get a remodel along with it! They are in such need for some TLC. Wolves come in so many colors it really sucks how limited the coats are on them, I’d probably go out and hunt them immeditly if they got a redo with some new coats

  1. Pure white/Eggwhite

Videos of (Clockwise from top left) :

  • Wolf 39F (Which was light gray as an adult and white as a senior). Original Lead Female of Yellowstone Druid Peak Pack. She was illegally shot in 1998 by someone who mistook her (her weight was around 110 lbs) for a coyote somehow. He was fined only 200$, when there were still under 80 wolves inhabiting the GYE (Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem) at the time and were protected.

  • Wolf 471F (White). She was born in 2003 to wolves to wolf #472F inside the Agate Creek Pack and while she did take part of multiples packs in her long life (9 years), she eventually returned to her natal pack in 2010 and served as the second-to last lead female of the pack's history. She was killed by the Mollie's Pack in 2012 shortly before whelping season. She had 7 nearly full-term pups in her body. The wolf besides her is "Big Blaze", as known by his official collar number 838M. He was born in the Druid Peak Pack in 2007 to wolves #569F & #480M. He was a founding member of the Blacktail Deer Plateau Pack in the Fall of 2008 and served twice as lead male of the Agate Creek Pack in two stints (2009) and (2011/2012). When the Agate's desintegrated, he formed the Junction Butte Pack with Agate and Mollie's Females. In this pack, he was the original lead male. He died in a conflict with another pack in 2012. The other wolf in that video is a young wolf with "mange"

#

The third video is of the Hayden Valley Pack (Yellowstone) and shows at first wolf #638M, the only black pup of the two litters produced by two females of this pack in 2006. The lead pair, #540F (which we see in this video and the last one) and #541M are both gray/white-colored wolves and with studied coat genetics in Yellowstone, at least, it's impossible for those gray wolves to have a black pup. The black coat is dominant.

#

Finally, the last video is again from the Hayden and showed wolf 540F and her daughter (the other breeding female of the pack in 2006). This daughter bred an interloper (a wolf from outside the park), which happened to be revealed in a recent study to have been the Mollie's lead male, wolf #495, a huge black wolf.

#

That daughter, born in 2005, possesed a gene that made her become whiter with age. Most white wolves that are known in YNP were either light gray wolves or black wolves that became white or "white". To finalize the daughter's arc, she lived to be almost 12 years old and became the mate of wolf 712M (which another user posted pictures of). She would be the lead female of the Canyon Pack from 2008 to 2016, where she lost her position. She was illegally shot in 2017.

Here's another look at some of those white wolves.

Possibly piebald wolves? Seems to be very rare if this photo is real (the person who posted it claims they got it of the tv2 Norwegian news channel which I unfortunately cannot verify) but an interesting possibility.

serene aurora
#

That is a hybrid with a dog

candid trench
#

Although hybrids might be an interesting rare, they have em for ducks in game after all. Plus taking a hybrid out of the population (in mammals at least) is generally seen as a good thing conservation wise.

serene aurora
nova hedge

#

I do agree that the animal is pretty beefy and the anatomy more resembles a wolf pup than a coyote pup - but to me, in the regions where the colors are normal, the animal looks more coyote than wolf (though there can be overlap in the two species especially in young pups), but this is entirely based on coloration. Piebald is largely unheard of (if not entirely unheard of) in wild wolf populations to my knowledge, meanwhile it has been documented time and time again in coyote.

The beefier appearance could also be a direct result of coyote-dog hybridization as well.

#

I am not opposed to a piebald coloration in the game's Grey wolves, since it is ultimately a game at the end of the day, but the question is if real world WILD wolf populations have ever exhibited piebald in recorded history. And to my knowledge, that answer is no.

candid trench
nova hedge
#

That's all good, we all suck at communication sometimes, don't worry about it!! But yeah it could be wolf-dog, weird colorations happen from hybridization all the time.

candid trench
#

Or maybe do the blue coat that I think is only found in hybrids that would be a more noticeable and clear hybrid possibility

#

Better photo color wise for what I’m talking about, definitely wouldn’t want to see this texture of coat in game tho lol it’s too reminiscent of a malamute around the head imo

#

If (big if) these are added they should be as rare, or rarer than the melas and albinos, hybrids are quite rare in nature after all

Wolf 302M (The first black wolf you see in the video) and Wolf 480M (the other black wolf you see in the video). Wolf 302M was the fourth lead male of the Druid Pack while his nephew, 480M, was the fifth. 302M was briefly the lead male in 2004 after 21M died and 253M left later that summer but he got injured and 480M took the lead. 302M would be a loyal and awesome hunter alongside 480M and contributed to the Druid Pack having almost as much success and notoriety of the Druid Pack under the reigns of lead male 21M (who led from late 1997 - june 2004) and his mates 40F (who led from late 1996 to May 2000) and 42F (who led from May 2000 to February 2004).

#

Both wolves 302M and 480M were born in the Leopold Pack, which resided on the Blacktail Deer Plateau of the park. 302M was born to founders wolves 2M and 7F in 2000 while 480M was born to this pair daughter's : wolf 259F and a gray male from the Nez Perce Pack (wolf 534M) in 2003. The former lived to be 9 years and was killed in October 2009 in a clash with another pack. The latter (480M) lived to be 7 years old and he died from unknown causes/malnutrition in 2010, after departing the Druid Pack after his mate, 569F, was killed by the Hoodoo Creek Pack in 2009. Since he was related to all the females that remained (and wolves avoid inbreeding), he left.

Wolf #40F (1995 - 2000). Wolf #40F was born in Canada in 1995 to the light gray female wolf #39F and a black male wolf. She, alongside two of her sisters (#41 and #42) and her mother (#39), were shipped to Yellowstone National Park in early 1996 to be released as part of the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone and Idaho of 1995 and 1996. She was part of the pack known as the Druid Peak Pack. Wolf #38M, a male from British Columbia (Canada), was paired with the 4 females and they were released. Not long after their release, wolf #40F started to push away her mother as the lead female, eventually kicking her out of the pack (which she also did with her sister #41F, in 1997/1998). She led the pack from 1996 to 2000, alongside two mates : wolf 38M (1996 - 1997) and wolf 21M (1998 - 2000). She died in May 2000 when she was killed by other wolves. Some of her offsprings are well known such as wolf 472F (the "Lady of the Yellowstone"). She is the grand-mother of Wolf #832F (aka "The 06 Female")

Wolf #F07 - Switzerland Wolf (Picture of Charly Gurt)

This female wolf was a very important one. She was one of the first wolves to recolonize Switzerland in the early 2010's and was the first "Matriarch" of the Swiss Wolf Population. She gave birth to about 7 litters across her long life and many of her offsprings went on to become leaders of their own pack. She died at the age of 13 in 2023.

Switzerland utilize mostly scats and genetics to study wolf presence, wolf relationships and the pedigree of the population

#

This non-invasive method of studying wolves is more and more utilized, especially in European Countries, with France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and now the Netherlands being key examples amongst many others

#

This wolf was taken in picture in the state of Idaho, in the early's 2010.

grizzled lynx

EVERYTHING. Face shape, legs, paws, tail, fluffiness. The entire anatomy needs work

#

-# Art bymakangeni on DeviantArt
Like why is the model almost fat? The neck is too thick and the head is too small. The fur is too fluffy and has no texture whatsoever, tail is also too large. The legs just seem incredibly off and why are the toes pink? They need more form and detail in the claws and paws.

Faces are horrible ugly, just need better shape and details, agaun the fur has no texture

it will be so cool to see, I really really hope they don’t butcher it

Wolf #54M (an uncollared gray male) in Yellowstone in 1998 with some pups

This a public domain picture from the Archives of the NPS (National Park Services) of Yellowstone National Park.

Many wolf studies conducted aerial survey to make population counts, reproduction data and collect other pertinent data on wolf and/or prey populations. That was also the way (and still is the best way imo) to conduct density counts on large mammals of North America and some nesting arctic birds like Snow Geese

#

You can find awesome pictures of the old wild west in the national park services archives. Old cars, old roads, old hairstyles, old behaviours like hand-feeding bears (before the bear proof trash bins) and all that jazz

The Swan Lake Pack (Yellowstone) in the mid's 2000's. They were with the Nez Perce Pack, the only all-gray colored packs of the Park in 2004 and 2005. The Cougar Creek Pack were the only all-black colored pack on the contrary. The Nez Perce Pack had up to 25 members at some point.

The K-Locus and black coloration alleles are dominant over the gray recessive coat coloration after introgression with domestic dogs over 10 000 years ago in the Northwestern Grey Wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis) subspecies.

This a Punnett's Diagram I made (a simplified version) that resume the findings of researchers in this study :

Reference : Schweizer, Rena M., Arun Durvasula, Joel Smith, Samuel H. Vohr, Daniel R. Stahler, Marco Galaverni, Olaf Thalmann et al. "Natural selection and origin of a melanistic allele in North American gray wolves." Molecular biology and evolution 35, no. 5 (2018): 1190-1209.

Homozygotes simply means that the same version of the alleles (genetic marker) was retained, while a heterozygote means that more than 1 version of the alleles was retained.

The link below will bring you on the website of the "Molecular Biology and Evolution" where you can read the study : https://academic.oup.com/mbe/article/35/5/1190/4913657

Abstract

Pigmentation is often used to understand how natural selection affects genetic variation in wild populations since it can have a simple genetic basis, and can affect a variety of fitness-related traits (e.g., camouflage, thermoregulation, and [reproduction] displays). In gray wolves, the K locus, a β-defensin gene, causes black coat color via a dominantly inherited KB allele. The allele is derived from dog-wolf hybridization and is at high frequency in North American wolf populations. We designed a DNA capture array to probe the geographic origin, age, and number of introgression events of the KB allele in a panel of 331 wolves and 20 dogs. We found low diversity in KB, but not ancestral ky, wolf haplotypes consistent with a selective sweep of the black haplotype across North America. Further, North American wolf KB haplotypes are monophyletic, suggesting that a single adaptive introgression from dogs to wolves most likely occurred in the Northwest Territories or Yukon. We use a new analytical approach to date the origin of the KB allele in Yukon wolves to between 1,598 and 7,248 years ago, suggesting that introgression with early Native American dogs was the source. Using population genetic simulations, we show that the K locus is undergoing natural selection in four wolf populations. We find evidence for balancing selection, specifically in Yellowstone wolves, which could be a result of selection for enhanced immunity in response to distemper. With these data, we demonstrate how the spread of an adaptive variant may have occurred across a species’ geographic range.

This is why the Nez Perce and Swan Lake Packs, in whom the breeders had the homozygous recessive gray alleles, only had gray pups.

#

Their breeding pair probably had a rare wolf with the Black Homozygote alleles (BB). That means that any offspring with any breeding partner would have been black, as it's the dominant allele. You can refer to the diagram i made if this isn't clear 🙂

#

#

Thus this pairing consisted of a heterozygous black male (Bb) and a grey female (bb) as both grey and black offsprings can be seen on the picture.

#

Outside of Western North America, black wolves are quite rare.

Here's the Slough Creek Pack in the middle of the 2000's. They were a pack formed from members of the Druid Peak Pack and the Mollie's Pack and one the packs that showed best the diversity of coat patterns in wild wolves of Western North America.

#

Here's "Riley" also known as wolf 1202BF (Denali National Park, Alaska). This national park uses a system to identify wolves with :

  • the first 2 numbers is the year of capture (12 = 2012)
  • the last 2 numbers being the #wolf collared/captured that year (02 = 2nd wolf captured that year)
  • B stands for Black (this wolf was black at birth but she greyed with age)
  • F stands for Female

This coloration pattern would be cool on wolves in-game (we could called it "Silver", "Blue" or "Half-Grey" or "Half-Back").

That wolf was born in 2009 in the famous Toklat Pack and she formed the Riley Creek Pack when she about 3 years old. She passed away at the age of of almost 11 years in 2020.

This picture was taken by Rick Cline/NPS.

There is one particular known video of her fighting with a wolverine

I keep coming in here I just can’t stress enough you won’t be able to get me off any map with wolves if they get a full model redo with the up coming fur additions for them and if they give them even half the fur variety they deserve

#

I’d be hunting wolves for forever! Really hope they get an absolute smattering of furs!

grizzled lynx
#

SAME!!! I already love hunting them so so sooo much but if they got a remodel? Thag would be amazing

lilac glacier
#

Honestly I avoid hunting them right now due to how bad their models are, I do it with most animals due to out dated models, why I’m mainly on the newer maps. Once they get a remodel I’ll definitely be hunting them though and I’m really looking forward to it

I’m so glad moose didn’t win they need it so much more 🙏
