Ai Behaviors
• All cats need to be Elusive like the Snow leopard & solitary except African Lions (they live in prides/solo males).
• Predators need to perform standoff charges as a warning if you tread to close. This also leads to attack charges. Exception: Fox, Coyotes, Bobcat, Lynx & those that do already: Tigers, Salt Crocs, Alligators.
• Coyotes are alone during the day/groups at night
• Wolves are Elusive & stand offish during the day/stalk & hunt you at night.
• Lions are grouped together in prides or solo males. Elusive/resting during the day/stalk & hunt you & prey at night.
• All predators need Prey hunting behavior: stalk & hunt appropriate prey.
• Small predators will flee in the presence of larger predators.
• Solitary Predators will compete for territory if encountered with one another: Animation
• Predators have smaller populations with their territory ranges.

  • In relation Wolf packs & Lion Prides have their own territories to avoid over population within zones.
  • Coyotes will group at night being they are natural scavengers. During the day they pursue small game like rabbits.
    • Prey will flee &/or defend against predators.

Predator Reclass/Model Rework
• Coyotes: Reclass-3/Rework
• Bobcats: Rework
• Wolves: Reclass 5/Rework
•Mountain Lion/Puma: Rework
• Black Bear: Rework
• Brown Bear: Reclass 8
• Grizzly: Rework
• African Lion: Rework

Ways to hunt Predators
• Prey Decoys
• Scents: Hormone or Prey Blood scents
• Leave a prey kill to attract predators.
• Dog: Akita: Tracks, Holds & Guards C:3-8 Predators

I'd also add mock charges to belligerent herbivores (moose, boars, wild cattle, etc.)

But overall this is great

Bobcats should remain at 2. They got brought down to class 2 for a reason.

Other than bobcats in class 3 I agree

foxes n Jackels are the real class 2's Bobcats are bigger along with coyotes. The Mexican Bobcat I would consider closer to the 2 range.

Northern Bobcats rarely tip 23lbs.

They are fine in class 2

we can agree to disagree, where I'm from 30-40lbs avg.

However, I will agree it varies on climate & region as it can be said for any game. Mechanically it bugs me bc the calibers are so restrictive n where I'm from Red Fox are way smaller than our Bobs & Yotes.

While Bobcats can reach a healthy 40 pounds in some parts of North America, leaving them as a Class 2 Species is not a terrible idea given that they are similar in size to Siberian Musk Deer, another Class 2 Species

yea but thats Lynx territory from my knowledge based on the region if I'm not mistaken. Mexican bobcat make sense being that 25lb range given the climate. In Game they are listed as 2 different species. I'd have no issue with the 2 being separate Mexican Bob C:2 Bobs C:3. Mexican Bobs n a red fox side by side can easily be close. Normal Bobs Rival yotes in size compared to a 15-18lb Red Fox.

#

Authentically I'd class grey fox as a C:1 on the high end being they barely get up to 10lbs. Red fox atleast have a chance to reach 15 up to 20lbs.

Bobcats as whole I can agree vary in size depending on location & climate. Again, where I'm from they easily avg 30-40lbs and are really cunning & witty. It's rare to see them w/o a caller & decoy. Red Fox they're much smaller in comparison, however they could be bigger elsewhere. Our coyotes avg 40-60lbs 70 if we're lucky but I'm aware alot of folks see them closer to 30-40lbs elsewhere.

From my experience I see Furbearer species as follows:

#

• C:1 Mink, Hare, Marten
• C:2 Fox, Raccoons, Fisher cat
• C:3 Coyote, Bobcat, Lynx (Canadian/Iberian), Badger
• C4: Beaver, Wolverine, Eurasian Lynx

# placid sinew This would be perfect, but I don't know if they have the capacity or the willing...

It would be simple. Reduce population, remap their roam range within zones, coding to have different actions when certain conditions are met such as the day/night cycle & interactions with certain game for the hunt action, as for aggression its active when in contact with other predators and players. Reworks EW already has that down & they also have the know-how for behaviors from the Wolves (ai & pathing need TLC badly), snow leopard, tigers, gators, salt crocs and pumas used to hunt before they nerfed them to be scaredy cats & no longer hunted game I'm seriously annoyed they nerfed them. It was only an issue due to high population spawns. Lions also have a chase animation but theirs nothing there they are chasing. The main new added reactions would be additional ways to hunt them using a fresh kill, decoy and scents. Which further applies with the Ambusher Traits. In turn they are reclassed appropriately. The reclass in no way effects the use of calibers except the 22H that should be C: 1-3.

#

I also strongly disagree the use of Birdshot being used on Class 2 game where buckshot is intended or small gauge slugs such as 410ga, 28ga, 20ga 16ga. In addition since Birdshot was classed up so should Turkeys & Geese as Class: 2 with tru score like beard & spurs (idk geese bc they're waterfowl?). But theres threads up already for birds, this thread is directed to predators being reworked to behave as predators. I hunt them IRL often & it does bother me severely they act like scared ally cats being shood away with a broom!

I like all of these, however I would say mountain lions shouldn't be fully solitary. Resent research has shown they are surprisingly social and will often share territory and even food with other mountain lions.

heavy gale
# tropic goblet I like all of these, however I would say mountain lions shouldn't be fully solit...

I'm referring to less populations in zones not isolation. When PF released they were everywhere n spooked prey too often. So EW nerfed them. I'm requesting it back with less populations within zones with territory mapping. That doesn't mean they wont cross or share a habitat. Drink zones is a prime example. Your never gonna see a black bear & a lion next to each other. Its more likely they'll avoid one another n drink at different times. Food however they will likely challenge for it.

tropic goblet
# heavy gale Bobcats as whole I can agree vary in size depending on location & climate. Again...

Red fox in Europe are bigger than in North America, although it varies hugely by region. In parts of Northern Europe they can commonly make it to 20-25lbs, and can sometimes exceed 30lbs. The average weight is 10-15lbs for males though. Personally I wish they'd separated the two red fox species (North American and European) as they are two very different species, but with the G1 fox now I doubt that'll ever happen

I dont disagree what annoys me is Grey Fox are small, not the same size as red fox n yotes are also not the same size as red fox either. Bobcat is a middle ground where Mexican Bobcat are closer to Red Fox in size where Northern Bobcat are bigger but yet slightly smaller than coyotes. Lynx varies on species as well & I'd love Canadian & Iberian lynx added. But yes I'm a minority here as a predator/upland hunter when most hunt prey & waterfowl from the look of it. It really bugs me with the current AI & only able to use the E-caller when there's other ways to hunt them without trapping.

Lynx being 4 seems odd, and black bear being up to 640lb at level 8-9 and even over 900lb with their GO makes their placement in class 7 justified imo. And unfortunately lions having prides in their coding might make balancing them tricky, since with the way lions are currently, if you kill a lion the zone it's occupying is deleted. If there's prides, that might screw with that and make them grindable which we don't want.

The classes are about what ammo you would shoot them with for the most part. In class 4 there's mostly 30-06 certified game like whitetail, warthogs, mountain goat, lesser kudu, and I think the only predator is snow leopard. They're sort of small, but they're still a true big cat and are still substantially bigger than lynx.

Doesn't really seem right to shoot a lynx with a .454, a .50 cal minie ball, 577/450 or 30-06. Maybe with the current ingame lynx since they're oversized by 30lb, but they don't seem like they belong in class 4 to me.

heavy gale

yea but you're not shooting them with a lighter load if they're in class 4.

Yea there's problems with the system, but I still don't get what the point of advocating for lynx being in 4 and not 3 would be.

30-30 was another at 2-6 generally speaking the game listed as they are are commonly hunted with that caliber. Its a theory I've come to understand with trying to make sense of it.

Servals and caracals are small, they're only up to like 40lb.

heavy gale
heavy gale

Out of the Lynx the Eurasians are the largest of the 4. Bobcats, Canadian/Iberian Lynx typically dont push past 25lbs avg. Depending on habitat & climate Bobcats & Canadian Lynx can reach 40lbs. But is rare from what ppl tell me even though were I'm from 30+ is avg. for bobcats. Yotes 50+ unless we have a drought & mange pandemic.

rapid rain
#

The top one has some flaws with the bigger cats comparison, but according to the fact lynx are a few inches taller than a snowy at the shoulder, this would be roughly accurate it seems.

On their respective wiki's though it says lynx over 30kg are hyper-rare, meanwhile a 70kg snow leopard is merely "occasional" and on average snowy's are 2x the weight. They're also a true big-cat in the genus panthera and they hunt yak (albiet, not very big ones.)

heavy gale
#

This is why Eurasians are unique in the sense of the cats bc they sit between the lrg & medium cats. Make no mistake they are large when next to snows when I worked with big cats. I'm seriously kicking myself I never took pictures when I did cause I got to assist with a tiger having kits. It was a wonderful experience to get the chance.

#

I'm sure

heavy gale
#

When I started my studies I did so with Henry Doorly's cat program it was pretty neat to see there efforts and studies for assisting towards wild populations. They were the 1st to ai gators successfully as well.

#

Part of the issue is folks hear lynx and automatically think bobcat or canadian lynx but dont really know the true size of Eurasian Lynx unless they see them personally or in my case both in rescue & captivity circumstances see Snow Leopards next to Eurasian Lynx height n size they appear nearly even minus scale weight & snows are slightly longer minus the tail.

heavy gale
#

If there was a reclass by my proposal the list above would be void, but I'd expect alot of game to be shifted at some point & not just predators if this would happen. I would also expect additional predators to be added throughout the 1-9 list in the future.

heavy gale
#

Worst case scenario I can live with the classes as they are but more importantly everything else mentioned above is a must in some shape &/or form bc predators are not as cowardly as we have them now.

Predators: Needed Update

heavy gale
# rapid rain I'm sure

I made some small changes to both this thread & my authentic Game 1-9 thread after further review & thought to dive all in & tie 3 posts together. I still feel Eurasian Lynx is a low C:4 being they are authentically categorized as Medium Game with males reaching 60lbs but referring to avg's was a better solution. But I'm going to follow through with authenticity for our ammo, Game Classes, & Predators since they have been the most neglected.

It should be the opposite. The only small predator that challenges larger predators are Badgers & Wolverines. Mtn Lions will challenge bears over food and wolves will also challenge bears if they are in packs. However, wolves' solo can & will challenge Mtn Lions. This can also be said with predators of the same relative size like Red Fox, Bobcats, & Coyotes. The ai bugs me & I hope they seriously consider reworking it.

I do like the thought based on in-game game level's being a factor since EW has a 10 lvl mechanic (Trivial-G1) similar to how I compared it with prey game. Higher lvl'd game act more as aged or vetted game as they would irl. As for the coding related to behaviors that I shared above to lean towards being territorial. Its a triggered response. Meaning a condition command is coded & triggered when the conditions are met. Very common practice in animations as well as actions in games of many genres. Overall if I'm honest I really want predators to act as predators with hunting instincts to Favor'd [set] prey & territory. This would also mean less predator population caps further increasing prey spawns & population caps in general. This makes the ecology more authentic as well as making predators & prey act more natural at the same time. Ppl always complain about pumas & mtn lions scaring game & i loved it but they got nerfed due to complaints. What EW should've done was reduce the pop cap & made them elusive as a here & their encounter. But ppl forget Pumas are heavy on PF intentionally as its explained in the Stoy Arc. SRP however I agree the predator cap as a whole is too high & should be reduced. Though I'd like to see this applied to all reserves with the exception of reserves that are intentionally designed to have high predator populations related to the Story Arcs or if the area referrenced authentically has high predator populations.

#

Its a big order but for the long haul I believe it will pay off in the end. But I'm also aware EW has a moderately sized team & they are still using the old engine to allow old gen access so such progress is rather limited. With that said I'll take any improvements their able to. Last but not least I do however have high expectations to have them rework how scents work & add prey blood scents, scent wicks, & decoys. Its bugging me as a predator hunter all I have is an E-Caller which was a huge surprise to see & a welcomed feature I might add. But after last year's content I'm convinced they have the capacity to do it & do it justice. I & others feel scents & scent use is past due to be updated esp. since the game has evolved from release 8yrs ago.

heavy gale
#

I almost forgot it's also worth noting some predators also co-exist and share the same territory. Bobcats & coyotes is 1 example & to those who don't know badgers also hunt side by side with coyotes as well.

Some mechanisms need to be adjusted to prevent encounters between predators and prey in the need zone (for example, between the brown bear and the moose, or between the black bear and the white-tailed deer). In other cases, such as when the gray fox and the bobcat coincide in the feeding zone, conflicts would arise between them in real life, so they try to avoid confrontation. In this case, a mechanism is needed to separate one species from the other.

predators have an instinctive understanding of what is and what isn't prey ... They rarely attack something that is bigger or seemingly more aggressive than themselves .....

You may see females attacking to protect or guard a nest or young .... But overall MOST solitary predators will avoid conflict if they have a path of escape .....

lament abyss
# echo pebble predators have an instinctive understanding of what is and what isn't prey ... ...

I’d like to know if the puma has attack potential in COTW and what happens when it’s badly wounded or when it has the opportunity.
The puma does potentially attack, it can even be deadly.
I’d also like there to be a change in the puma’s behavior in COTW: when it comes to drinking, the puma stays near water but only approaches briefly to drink, then remains close to the trees (100 m). Felines feel vulnerable while drinking, so they don’t stay there for long.

heavy gale
# lament abyss I’d like to know if the puma has attack potential in COTW and what happens when ...

They used to till EW patched (Nerfed) them. Its wasn't like the Tiger but you had encounters b4 ppl kept whining they were over populated, too aggressive, & spooked game. It broke my heart when they made the changes. They were perfect, though I will agree the population was & is high however ppl forget it was part of the narrative in PF that they had high populations. SRP they should be reduced to a lower cap.

I saw a herd of Himalayan tahr fleeing while a snow leopard was chasing it. What a beautiful experience I had in Sundarpatam.

#

The next update should include this: predators should also play a role in hunting prey, we’re not the only ones hunting them. If a prey animal was taken down by a predator, the player is prevented from claiming it, the trophy-prey should disappear after some time.

heavy gale
#

If I recall CC had carcasses from the 4 story wolves. Not to mention predator feeding zones have carcasses & meat chunks. I'm happy to see some predators with hunting animations however are often chasing air from my experience. I'd love to see predators actually catch their prey. This includes either creating a feed zone where it was successful or having predators drag their query to the feed zone. Again, all predators should have a specific prey they pursue to keep it simple. Bears I'd like to see trying to catch fish in streams & ponds over drink zones. I can't say it enough either to keep ppl from getting upset like they did with pumas C:5 & up predators should have reduced overall populations with longer respawns similar (but NOT exactly) to Tigers & Snow Leopards. Also to note C:3 Predators shouldn't be able to spook C:5+ predators it should be opposite where C:5+ spook C:3 & below predators. This was mentioned with lynx spooking moose & brown bears is rather farfetched & absurd.

prisma finch
#

I remember in the early days (About when Parque came out) Pumas actually hunted and killed their prey. You could often find dead animals on the ground. The animal was still on your map and still huntable, but it was just a nice added detail. Hope they bring this feature back

prisma finch
#

It would also be nice if we actually got mauled instead of just getting run into. The bears are way too peaceful. I would like it if they would like roar a few times if you’re too close and they feel threatened. And if you keep going they’ll rear up and roar at you. If you still move closer they’ll actually like smack you and start mauling you. Having a handgun then would be useful to defend yourself. The game would be more realistic and it would make hunting maps with bears more challenging, because if you just hear that Warning call, but can’t see the bear, the suspense will definitely be there.

prisma finch
#

Also if we could have a standoff between cougars would be cool. They might stand for a while and then have a chance at attacking. Imagine staring into the eyes of an aggressive cougar, waiting to see who makes the first move. Will it be you, or the predator?

I'd be happy if they all get better behavior updates where they actually (hunt, stand off, & attack if you get too close over running away). C:3 & below predators except Badgers & Wolverines would be more likely to spook. Remodel reworks are desprately needed. Lower the population & spawn caps make them more authentic unless its part of the narrative like PF with Pumas where its intended for the scenario. Also, as an IRL predator hunter I'd like decoys & prey blood scents to be added.

With the arrival of Sumatran we were shown it's possible to have smaller amount of predator but actually feel there is a predator in the area. Same for the snow leopard, as there is only a few on the map so it feels more realistic and rewarding.
We don't need 200 cougars on a map, let's have 20 or 10 but with a behaviour to attack you if you are close.
Black bears are known they rather run away, but walking towards this giant brown bear and it's scared of you 200metres ahead and then run away like a little kid??
So yeh, I am for having less amount of big predators on the map but with agressive behaviour.

It's kinda hillarious that in Taiga map I am fine walking around three brown bears just fleeing from me but then I get scared of this little Capercaillie because this thing attacks you on sight out of nowhere like a Leeroy Jenkins XDDDD

I'm just gonna say it, and I've suggested it in a previous thread, we need a predator control option, even if it means predators respawn just half the time and the other half is a prey species that spawns in. We need to be able to manage some predators to an extent, because so many times we come to our main zones and the wolves and cougars have driven everything off. Shooting off some predators should have a purpose other than just respawns.

#

Exclude bears and foxes from this as they don't seem to impact prey animals. Gators and Salties, too.

#

Honestly, we really only need that option for wolves, cougars, and lynx. But it would be beneficial. Anything that scares away game.

heavy gale
#

I'm trying fellas 😅 As a predator hunter theirs more often than not more Prey than Predators except in the unique cases where there's more. Parque Fernando was a great concept towards that but Video Game wise EW overkilled the concept. SRP is alittle better but still too high for my liking. My goal is 1 for better (more authentic) predator population balance caps along with respawns, 2 more animation & AI pathing & behaviors designated within a zone or zones (varying on reserve location), 3 more ways to pursue & hunt predators. If baiting with feeders is not an option respectively every predator should be assigned to a specific prey to hunt with hunting/chasing animations more polished. This in turn mechanic wise you find prey sign you are likely to find specific predators in the area. An example you find a Rabbit Warren (Burrow) your going to likely find Coyotes, Bobcat, Fox in the area. For Bears I really want EW to utilize their aquatic features such as swimming & fishing. A step further that would further justify the Burrow Update would be to include Predator Dens. It sounds like alot but in truth most of it shouldn't take much to adjust Predator Population Caps & Respawn Rates at the very least. The other features mentioned I'd hope to expect to be applied through reworks & future updates as we move fwd. Its these kinds of features that bring the game to life when the animals act more natural over artificial within reason ofc given its a game. In turn I would expect Prey to receive some individual diversity as well to set them apart outside of just awareness difficulty. As much as it pains me to admit bc I royaly hate Waterfowl but they all act the same except for the geese from my gameplay experience & Upland Birds idk what caused the change but they became way more difficult to pursue after a few updates. So its an overall issue across most of CotW Species but not all of them.

thorn knot
#

Or at least they should respawn less frequently.
Pumas constantly ruin my morning hunt for wapiti bcs there is like 5 of them in the area and keeps spooking them. So I get angry, shoot them all so they don't get in the way but before the hunt pressure goes down all the pumas are back.

#

Lynx also have weird settings that they go drink at the same time as reindeer and bears and this lil kitty spooks all the reindeer AND the bears that are right next to the reindeer.

Feels like bears are set up to have 'herbivore' setting and lynx 'carnivore' so they spook each other even though reindeer should not be that nervous from lynx or should it? Bear surely shouldn't. Wolves I understand.

However in many maps I just find weird how like 6+ bears are calmly drinking next to elks and deer....

heavy gale
#

Everyone keeps mentioning this spook issue with Lynx & I've never had this occur in my gameplay & I've had and played the game since launch & I'm on Medved alot as its still my #1 reserve. But its not unusual for prey & predators to drink together as it does occur in the wild. However my issue is the overpopulation & spawn rate and its not bc they spook game I enjoy that feature more than anyone esp when pumas used to b4 EW nerfed them. No my issue with it is its unnatural. Thats 1 of the key features I loved about Sundarpatan they did the predators correctly even the Fox. Unless a reserves narrative mentions an overpopulation issue I shouldn't see C:5+ predators often. My 2nd core issue is they need hunting behaviors or foraging behaviors this leads to another way to hunt them by locating their prey. Now related to Lynx scaring bear that shouldn't happen. If a predator is a C:8 lower Class Predators should leave the area but not flee unless chased. Wolves are an exception given they hunt in packs.

Related to your ? Predators are often not mindless killing machines they typically only kill when they need to eat an often prey will last awhile depending on the predator & size of the prey. So no its not unusual for prey & predators to be seen near one another in an open area or drinking pool. However I do agree that their zone times shouldn't be the same. Infact more often than not from my irl field experience predators will often opt out of sharing a drinking pool till the apex predator has left.

Another note Predators are miss classed & not appropriately size scaled either. By EW's current listing this is how they should be. And yes Eurasian Lynx are relatively the same height as Snows and are just as capable of taking C: 4-5 prey. Bobcats, Canadian, & Iberian Lynx are smaller before ppl argue with me about it. Also unlike the other 3 their habitat conditions vary as well as prey options. On a related note wolves are technically C:4 game but given their danger level with a pack they can easily be a Class higher & could be justified where they are since Elk is a C:7. However imho I do feel C:5 is appropriate for wolves making Black Bear the true C:6 Predator. Gators are a C:7 due to the size & Hardiness though are not as aggressive as I'd hoped they would be when your in or near the water however dont mistake my meaning to be relative to Salt Croc aggression. That brings us to C:8 Brown Bears are larger than Grizzlies though to my knowledge are not as aggressive as Grizzlies which despite the size gap is why Grizzlies are C:8 Dangerous Game. C:9's are ofc the Worlds Largest Cats & Salt Crocs should be given their size & demeaner.

C:1
• Gray Fox

C:2
• Tibetan Fox
•Red Fox
•Side Stripped Jackel
•Bobcat

C:3
• Coyote

C:4
•Snow Leopard
•Eurasian Lynx

C:5
• Grey Wolf
• Mtn Lion/Puma

C:6
• Black Bear

C:7

C:8

•Eurasian Brown Bear

C:9
• African Lion
• Siberian Tiger
• Salt Croc

Again, this is my opinion based on the actual predator's behaviors, size, & habitats over EW's logic. Yes I'm aware its a game however with all due respect predators deserve to be credited just as Waterfowl & Prey has. This includes ways to hunt them & I'm urging EW to add prey blood scents or pheromone scents & decoys esp. if we're not going to get a feeder mechanic. Furthermore all predators need to be assigned a prey to hunt. This adds a passive mechanic to players to locate predators by locating their prey.

If you want to take things further add "Predator Dens" alongside the Burrow Update proposed here: https://discord.com/channels/393040947006406657/1281956469037858816 Also greatly reduced the overall predator cap & respawns with C:4+ predators except the few such as Alligator & Salt Crocs as they are intended to have higher populations in there respected reserves, however. Parque Fernando I respect the high Puma population but would like it reduced by 20-25% with the respawn rate the same as Snow leopards for better balances. This extends to Silver Ridge Peaks Mtn Lions that I feel a 10-15% population reduction would be fair along with the respawn rate as the snow leopards. Please understand players overall are annoyed with predator spooking game while I prefer they actually hunt their prey & I can equally agree the caps are too high and should be reduced with longer recovery respawn rates to feel more authentic & natural "unless!".... a reserves narrative specifies they have a predator population issue.

I figured an additional mechanic to find sign of them would be a nice change over only finding meat chunks lying about & folded over grass for rest zones would add more life & authenticity to them. Additionally I really want EW to designate each predator a prey they can hunt. This would not only further add to their behavior but also acts as a passive way for players to find predators. You find their prey you're likely to find their predator somewhere in the area. This further alines with predator path roaming their territory/hunting grounds. I am proposing all my knowledge to find ways for predators to get more added to them. Prey are not the only Trophy Game that should get all the Credit. Although as much as I love the current mounts, I'd really love to see Skull & Wall/Floor Fur Capes as well given your Prize is their Coat & Skulls Trophy wise aside from body mounts.

On a related note I do recall in atleast 2 Narratives where your final quest hunt takes you to caves. Medved with the Albino Brown Bear & Parque Fernando with the Puma. Its been awhile but I also believe 2 of the 3 story Iberian Wolves were found at a Den as well but dont quote me.
