Problem started since after December 3, 2024 Winter Update. This is the screen where the game hangs up on. It's always when the loading icon is on "Following the blood trail..." Game does not hang 100% of the time when starting up, but it's getting progressively worse with hanging up 9/10 times. I checked windows event viewer, and there were no services or other programs with errors or warning. The only event associated with the game is "The program theHunterCotW_F.exe version 0.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.
Process ID: 3c74" My Windows operating system is fully up to date, and I just did a fresh install 3 weeks ago. Again, the problem started occurring only after the December 3rd update.
#Game Startup Freeze/Hang (PC Steam)

I seem to have made some progress diagnosing the problem. I can turn off cloud sync, delete the Avalance save files, and the game will startup and run perfectly. As soon as I restore all my saves from a backup, the game starts to hang again. I'm thinking there may be some sort of conflict going on with my Revontuli map. I will try switching maps and do some startup tests to verify.
Confirmed! The hang up only occurs if the last map played is Revontuli. I switched to Hirschfelden after 1 successful startup, and all subsequent startups were flawless. So, with the map Revontuli, I'm guessing there is a recent tent that I placed somewhere that is causing some kind spawning glitch that hangs the game up. I will try to load up Revontuli and remove the last 3 tents I put up, but one at a time with retesting the game's startup stability.
SOLVED! It was a tripod stand sitting on top of a moose need zone. My theory: The game loads the previously played map and spawns the animals on startup. The Moose were probably spawning into the tripod stand causing a cross thread memory loop, thus causing the game to hang up. On a successful startup, I moved the stand away from the Moose need zone, and then tested game startup 10 times, and had absolutely no hang ups. So, the preventative solution is to not place any portable structures on or too close to need zones. A lot of players have had this problem for years, and their only solution was to wipe out their saved game data and start over. Now, that I have confirmed what causes the problem, players will know what to look for and how to fix it from now on.
Same problem here but I didn't find this till after a successful start up and then I closed my game again.
Weirdly enough it worked after a fedora update from 40 to 41 so I figured it was just a linux or proton problem.
Let me know if you still have the problem, and if my solution fixes it. That would be epic if it solves most player's problems with hanging start ups.
It still hangs the last map I played was rev so.
I've started and restarted around 15 times at this point and it hasn't launched. My friend who doesn't have rev might be even more screwed because we did a GO grind together on my map. His just crashes doesn't even hang at the spot.
Any idea when patch will come out for this?
I have no idea if or when a patch will come out. I would suggest keep trying. It took me a lot of tries sometimes to get it successfully loaded. I would say keep trying.
Yeah, it hung on me again. Game is a p0s until devs fix it.
HEY
I found a temp fix till a patch comes out. Disable the Rev DLC.
After some farther testing even taking your tents down doesn't solve it but you can still play the game and get to rev if change maps every before you quit the game.
Hello Beastmaster6387!
Thanks for reaching out and sharing all your insights into the issue. I’m sorry to hear about the freezing problem after the December update. It's great to hear you've made progress in pinpointing the cause of the hang-ups and found a workaround. It looks like your discovery about the tripod stand near the moose need zone has provided a key solution to avoid future hang-ups!
To help the rest of the community, I recommend submitting a ticket through our support portal to report this issue in detail: https://support.thehunter.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. This way, our team can look into it further and potentially share the findings with everyone.
Thanks again for sharing your findings, and we're here if you need further assistance!
I don't think I pinpointed the exact problem. The game hung up on me again, but only once. But, I do have to say that it hangs up A LOT less. I'm thinking it's an animal spawning issue that's specific to Revontuli. Seems the stand may have exacerbated the problem, because the problem frequency changed greatly. I'm not exactly sure how geese spawning works, but I noticed that I see A LOT more of what I call "fake geese" instead of geese that actually spawn and fly over. Also, the animations of the fake geese are wonky and choppy unlike before the update. In conclusion, I'm 99.9% sure it's an animal spawning on startup issue that's causing Revontuli to hang on startup. Hope this helps the team solve the problem with their memory debugging.
Sounds like we're making some progress, and giving the support team good information to pinpoint and fix the problem.
Yeah and btw my friends problem was unrelated to this issue.
follow these steps. Developers won't fix this
I tried something like that to no avail. I'll give it another shot.
it worked for me. 1 year doing it indeed
Seems to be working better, but time will tell. What exactly does the file reserveworlddata actually do?
I don`t know 🙃 . I'm only doing what that posts say to do every time I need
And it is working
Gotcha. Thanks for the tip. Maybe this will help the developers that are following this thread.
I'm also having this problem with mine today. I was just playing it yesterday and the day before. Now today it is freezing on the same screen and everything. What exactly works here? @honest birch
I'm not Beastmaster but disabling the Rev DLC will let you load into the game. If you want to play on Rev then disable the DLC load into the game quit then load back in to cotw and select Rev. And then just never exit the game on rev. (This is a temporary fix)
User Faliega above suggested this. It worked out for me. Always back up your folder before attempting this. The save files are in your documents folder in a folder named "Avalance Studios." Also, make sure to re-enable your cloud backup afterwards.
