#Wild Boar Model Updates, Sound and Animation Changes, and More

As I've discussed with other animals, the Wild Boar is in need of some updates, as its age is showing and it doesn't really resemble the actual Wild Boar. Below, I will detail various changes I would like to see to help bring an iconic European species up to the same standard as various newer animals

Model Updates: As of right now, the current in-game Wild Boar only somewhat resembles a true pig. While its body is okay, the head needs a lot of work. The snout is unusually wide, and it seems to completely lack nostrils. While tusks will naturally show some of the inside of the mouth when the jaws are closed, the in-game pig suffers from being a constant mouth-breather like other older models, and sometimes its molars are visible when the mouth is shut. The fur could also benefit from being updated, as its current fur looks odd and artificial at times, especially on the head. Additionally, there is dimorphism in boars vs. sows, with boars sporting a mane along their necks and shoulders

TruRACS Update: With the proposed changes, I also suggest remodeling the tusks for both boars and sows, as well as introducing the TruRACS system to them. Having a variety of shapes and sizes for their tusks adds a ton of uniqueness to each pig, and it also offers the ability to improve on the current tusks

Sound Updates: While wild swine can be fairly elusive, there is one thing that pig hunters know well: they can be noisy eaters. While feeding, pigs vocalize a lot, making various grunts and squeals as they root around. When spooked, pigs are sometimes fairly vocal, making loud grunts and squeals as they flee. The Wild Boar could also benefit from having an increased vocal range, including sounds that are currently heard from the Feral Pig/Wild Hog. The Wild Boar also makes a distinct alarm call which is not present anywhere in-game, and it's often heard as loud huffing and screeching. Ideally, this would replace the current Warning Call (which also seems to be bugged right now, as it only ever plays the Mating Call).

Behavior Updates: While feeding, it would be great if Wild Boars would cover wider areas, spending a lot of time moving as they root around. Pigs sometimes cover vast swaths of land as they feed (which is one of the reasons they are such a problem when they're introduced to non-native areas). It would also be exciting if they were more prone to aggression. Making them more likely to attack at close range like Moose do would fit the Wild Boar well. When charging, pigs sometimes "bark" at their predators, which would be a cool immersive feature to raise the intensity of a boar attack.

Animation Updates: The animations don't really resemble how pigs move. This is especially present in how it runs. The in-game boar looks awkward when it runs, while they can be surprisingly graceful irl. A small detail that could be added is raising the tail when they run. Wild Boars, as well as Warthogs, sometimes raise their tails into the air as they run. Lastly, introducing death animations to the Wild Boar like what is seen in Moose would make shooting them feel much more grounded. Right now, like many other animals, they often flop to the ground in a very unflattering manner, sometimes not even actually falling (I've had some look like they sat down like a dog instead of falling over).

Great One Wild Boar z_greatone

As an iconic European species and part of the base game's roster, the Wild Boar could be an awesome candidate as another Great One.

Fur Types: Various domestic, feral, and naturally-wild pigs can be referenced, as pigs come in a variety of colors and patterns. Lengths of fur, especially the mane, could be varied as well between fur types

Tusks: With the model being improved and the tusks being fine-tuned, a Great One boar with robust, heavily-curled upper tusks and large, sharp lower tusks, all with varying shapes and sizes, would likely be the prime focus of a Great One.

Unique Warden Interactions: Like how the warden of Salzwiesen Park gives a unique voice line upon spotting a Great One Ring-Necked Pheasant, it would be cool to have the wardens of the Wild Boar's native reserves to also have a unique voice line upon spotting one, further cementing the Great Ones into a substantial part of the in-game world

Here I’m uploading photos of a wild boar with impressive tusks. It was hunted in Spain. This beautiful beast is worthy of being a Great One. Photos Credit: club-caza.

The silhouette of a large male wild boar is easily recognizable. A beautiful and distinctive shape: The high shoulder and low hip. ❤️🐗

I definitely support a Boar rework, they could really use one.

The morphology of wild boars by age:
• Rayón (piglet): 0-6 months
• Bermejo (juvenile with reddish fur): 6-12 months
• Escudero (sub-adult): 12-24 months
• Jabalina (adult female): Adult age
• Jabalí (adult male): Adult age

huh, indeed they do seem to be a little on the small side, I never really noticed until I did this side-by-side comparison

Yes. Just YES. They need a good rework. They’re so ugly that I hate adding them to my lodge. The fur definitely needs rework.

#

This is from my childhood game.. the boars in Cabelas: Big Game Pro Hunts are fluffier than The Way of the Hunter models, but both models are still strikingly better than TCOTW…
If boars weren’t so ugly, I’d actually go shoot the handful or rares I see running around the map.
At least the Feral Pigs look nice enough to taxizermize. The one Diamond Boar I have is sitting on a mount in the back of my lodge cause I don’t even wanna look at it.
(This sounds over the top but it is so true, REWORK THE BOARS)

Hello @shell frost

Thank you for your detailed suggestions to improving the boars visuals and sounds. Your opinion is very valuable to us. We will make sure to take it into consideration.

If you feel like there is anything else you'd like to tell us about, feel free to do so here

Not sure if this has been mentioned but both feral pigs and european wild boar should have a similar mechanic to wolves where you can hear them from 500yds without the pop-up appearing.

#

Oh and increase caller distance to 250/300yds

shell frost
#

I haven't mentioned that, though I did mention them being noisy when at a feed zone

Pigs as a group are really bland ingame. To combat this, they should add a vocalization upon being shot in a non ethical area. And while it may be a bit gruesome to some, it’s important to the sport of hunting.

#

I feel like you could just have them make sound like how bears do without it being specifically tied to a non-vital hit

#

I do wish pigs in general were much more vocal in-game, particularly in groups

I'd love for the wild boar to get some love making it actually stand up to the current wild hog/feral pig and the idea for the g1 is great

Adding better sound effects to the animals too is something I feel this game needs alot some animals tend to share calls and it's a bit irritating

I also want the wild boar to have tru racks so each boar is unique with their tusks

Just popping this here as some extra inspiration. This is Horatio from the game Far Cry: New Dawn. He’s a big ol boar. Huge animal- and the tusks are massive. I know it may seem a bit more fantastical to some (though, there are hogs that can get this big irl!) but the impressive size of them struck me as something that a Great One might have. Just a thought. :)

Also, yes to this whole thread, but especially the bit about making them more aggressive and vocal. I wanna be chased by angry piggies. 🥹 please, and thank you.
