Not sure where else to post this, but here it goes. I'm playing on PC/Steam. Ever since December 3, 2024 update, game freezes/hangs 9 times of 10 when starting up. The dogs no longer work when on the ATV. The fetching dog cancels search or returning harvest and teleports back to me when exiting a blind. Game will switch into window mode after 30-60 seconds of playing. The game is literally unplayable for me, and I had absolutely 0 problems before the update. I installed a fresh copy of Windows two weeks ago for unrelated reasons. My Windows OS is up to date, and everything running as it should. The game, complete disaster.

I can confirm controls to task a dog are now grayed out while on the ATV. Also, if you send a dog on a task, it will immediately cancel that task and return if you get on the ATV. Didn't used to be like this - very annoying. I used to send the hound to track blood and follow it on my ATV - not now!
Exactly. I can't even play the game anymore as it now hangs up on startup 9/10 times. I even went through the Steam settings to validate all game files and returned no errors. I can't even believe the devs would release such a pile of crap, but I guess the deadlines were more important than having a functional game. It's the worst disaster they put out since the New England Coast disaster. I avoided the New England Coast disaster by not buying it, but this last update was forced.
Just saw the fetching dog take a bird up, and went off in the distance to search for birds with a bird in its mouth. This is ridiculous.
It's the update they sent out on December 3, 2024. There's nothing that can be done about it until the devs fix it. They were more concerned about meeting the release deadline rather than worry if it were functional or not. I'm on PC, so I don't know if it's affecting the consoles the same way. The only way I can get it to work is to go into window mode at the first logo screen by hitting (alt+enter), and then if the game hangs on startup, I can at least close it with task manager while the game is in window mode. Can take a few attempts to get a clean startup. When it does startup as it should, I go back to full screen mode and play. Otherwise, if I were to leave it in full screen and it hangs up, I have to reset the computer, because the game blacks out the desktop screen preventing me from using task manager. This is the only compromise I have came up with to at least attempt to play the game until the devs fix their disaster.
I had no issues with this until today. Dog stopped working and I closed the game, did other things fr a while. Now it won't start up, crashes while loading in now.
Did a bug report for the devs, and it feels like an important one since it's game-breaking. I was jst able to get in, I closed pretty much every backgorund process, but it's all still iffy.
I'm right there with you. I looked through the windows application and system logs in event viewer, and found absolutely nothing that suggests an interference of the operating system or services. The only log I could find is that theHunterCotW.exe hanged and closed. Did you actually buy and install the winter DLC or just got the Winter update? I myself did not buy the DLC yet.
Have you verified the local files in Steam? In the past after an update, I had a few files that (for whatever reason) didn't until I verified them.
Yes, I did the file validation check yesterday. Did not have any errors.
If any devs are following this thread, this is the screen where the game hangs up on start.
I solved the startup hanging issue. If you can get the game to successfully start up, continue the map you were previously playing. Look for portable structures on your map that are on top of or very close to need zones, and move them 10-20m away from those need zones. Mine was a tripod stand sitting right on top of a Moose need zone that was probably causing the Moose to spawn inside the tripod causing a memory cross thread loop that hangs up the game. The update must have increased the spawn capacity/numbers of each map, and that would explain the sudden problems for some players, and not all. I must also add, that I don't remember that Moose need zone being there before, but I can't confirm it either. Try this solution out, and let me know if it solves your problem. That would be great if this fixes the common problem a lot of players have had that resorted them to restarting their entire game to fix.
