In the great outdoors you must be prepared, with these three calibers (and some firsthand knowledge) you’ll be sure to make it out there… in the great wilderness

.30-30

Who knows how many deer .30-30 has taken, hell it’s a high chance it was your grandpa’s deer gun, your great grandpa, your great grandpa’s grandpa… well you get it!

Please welcome the new and improved .30-30!

3-7!!

35 Whelan Custom

From the tall Rockies to the Alaskan barrens with this caliber, you can cover a ton of ground with one rifle using this cult classic! While it does have the same class range as other rifles in this game, it hits 6-8’s significantly harder than other 4-8 rifles.

4-8

.30-378

Born from the ashes of .378 Weatherby like a Phoenix, it was transformed into a much more versatile cartridge capable of anything mule deer - Cape buffalo.

5-9

Scopes and outfits

With the release of Nepal I was quite saddened to see the lack of a new outfit given the potential Nepal holds.

For an outfit: I just want to see flannel + blue jeans and maybe a cowboy hat?

Scopes are a wildly overlooked concept in this game for some odd reason.
We need brush scopes! a 2x7 would be nice or even a new 3x6 (for all rifles)

an improved 30-30 using more modern loads would be awesome

and I am all for having more outfits, having the iconic red and black flannel, jeans, and a cowgirl hat would fix me :3

yeahhh, I think someone said it seemed like it was based off of really old loads, not the more recent ones that are a lot more effective

#

I'd love to be able to use the deer hunting rifle + cartridge and have it actually be worth using

And that’s probably rooted in the idea it still preforms the way it did pre smokeless powder but I’m not too sure

either way, I'd love for them to revisit it. it's an iconic deer hunting cartridge, and it sucks that it's arguably one of the worst picks in the game

  • limited by the inherently reduced range from a shorter barrel
  • the round itself in-game also feels weaker than the .243 (if not weaker), making the reduced range feel really bad

idk if it's actually weaker than the .243 in-game, but it definitely feels like it

Maybe swap the 30-30 for a 38-55, 25-35, 32spcl, or 35 remington since we already have a 30-30?

I only want to see a new .30-30 if it’s a bolt action with Soft Point and Polymer Tip rounds

# tacit knot I only want to see a new .30-30 if it’s a bolt action with Soft Point and Polyme...

Much as I love my .30-30, it's a bit problematic for bolt or semi-auto type rifles. The big rim on the case is meant to help with extraction but bolt guns are designed to work around 'rimless' designs.

On the other hand, a break action or falling block would be perfect for it because the rim will help with headspacing and extraction. You can still use polymer tipped bullets in tube magazines and leverevolution ammo was a thing long before this game existed so they kind of chose to ignore it.

It's annoying, believe me

Only really effective bolt .30-30 I could find

My dad has a Stevens Model 325 and he’s killed plenty of deer and even an Elk with it. He also has a firing replica of a Winchester Model 1886 that he killed a Black Bear with. They’re fairly good quality weapons in my experience, but then again, I’ve never actually killed anything with one, only shot them at a range.

Bump. Better ammo is a must

Jaxy acknowledged during his twitch stream earlier today that the 30-30 and .45-70 need help btw
he obv couldn't confirm if they'd change anything, but it sounds like the team is at least aware

That would be awesome. I know there's an element of video game balancing in place, so having a 4-9 cartridge also be comparable to the 7-9 cartridges would be insane, but both of our base game lever action rifles desperately need help bc they both feel pretty weak

The .45-70 I can at least take with me for taking on red deer, elk, and other deer species, but the 30-30 seems to struggle with the one species it was used against the most

#

I'm willing to accept some video game-ism (like the .300 magnum being exclusively for large and dangerous game) as long as it's still fun to use and good at its intended job

That's actually part of what I mean. If the .45-70 for example was amazing at taking down everything from deer to buffaloes, what would be the point of picking anything else? I don't even feel like range can be an argument, given how it already handles a lot of animals far outside its effective range

I totally get wanting things to reflect their irl usage, don't get me wrong. But at the end of the day, it's still a video game. It's not feasible to make it a 1:1 faithful recreation of real life. I still agree that stuff like the 30-30, 9.3x74R, and .45-70 need work, but I disagree with the idea that the team needs to disregard basic fundamentals of video game design to accomplish this goal

I'm not saying disregard the basics, I'm saying they need to look at real world use when they build their class systems. Yes a .45-70 can ethically kill a deer as close as point blank and as far as 300 yards but no one is going to choose the rifle with almost 40 pounds of felt recoil when a .243 can do the same thing with 7 pounds of recoil.

The .30-30 is a lighter version of this idea, it handles deer and pigs of any size but it's just as good at bringing down black bear and elk, it does the same thing a .30-06 does it just does it in a lighter more compact package.

Cartridges have so much overlap irl that people generally pick a rifle based on what they plan to do for their hunts. Thick timber and quick shots the .30-30 is a good way to go. Open woodland and plenty of space and the .30-06 is a good bet.

Modern .30-30 ammo is VERY different from what is used in game. Its not a black powder load anymore
