As many people have said, the Grizzly Bear in-game definitely needs some work to be brought up to par with the newer animal models. It looks goofy, its fur (both texture and color) is just wrong, and more. I know a lot of people have pointed to the updated Brown Bear, but I feel it has a few issues as well that I want to address. Below I will highlight what each one does well, what each one falls short in, and other changes I would suggest making:
Grizzly Bear Pros

  • the overall body silhouette seems to better match irl brown bears, particularly in the length of the body.
  • the head mostly resembles irl brown bears, with the back being very wide and round
  • Its running animation better resembles the way brown bears run, with more deliberate strides
    Grizzly Bear Cons
  • the fur is constantly very dark, while irl grizzly bears tend to be a lighter shade of brown
  • the texturing of the fur is rather odd, looking less like the long, shaggy coats of brown bears
  • the eyes are very small and close to the base of the snout
  • when it opens its mouth, its lips curl back very far, something that bears don't do, even during fights
  • the claws seem to be excessively long. Bears have huge claws, but the grizzly bear's claws in-game are particularly long
  • i'm not sure what sound it makes when making a warning call, it doesn't sound like a brown bear at all
  • they really don't feel dangerous at all, even when they go aggressive

Brown Bear Pros:

  • the fur is very shaggy and dense, fitting for an animal that resides in very cold climates
  • it has several fur types, somewhat resembling the variation seen in irl brown bears while also granting some vivid variation in-game
  • when opening its mouth to vocalize, its lips form the proper shape, rather than curling all the way back like the in-game Grizzly Bear
  • the claws are partially obscured by fur and appear to be a more appropriate length
    Brown Bear Cons:
  • while this may just be due to the longer, shaggy fur, its body looks more round and short than irl brown bears usually look
  • its running animation looks more like a wobbly gallop, rather than the longer, more deliberate strides of the Grizzly Bear
  • its head shape doesn't seem to match irl brown bears as well as the Grizzly Bear, with the back of the head being less around and the snout being less prominent. It almost looks like a Black Bear with longer fur
  • Brown Bears also don't pose a big threat when bumped
  • their warning call also isn't particularly a sound that they make when stressed, it's more akin to a bear challenging another bear to a fight
  • why are Brown Bears only class 7 animals? With Grizzly Bears being class 8, I feel that Brown Bears should be raised to that same standard, given their similar size

General Changes for Both Bears:

  • give Grizzly Bears a similar coat to the Brown Bear. Shaggier, longer, etc.
  • give Grizzly Bears more appropriate coloration (honestly even going off of the Brown Bear would suffice)
  • share the Grizzly's running animation with the Brown Bear
  • update the Brown Bear's head shape to match their irl counterpart
  • rename the Brown Bear to "Eurasian Brown Bear" (Ursus arctos arctos), as that is most likely the subspecies depicted in places like Revontuli Coast and Medved-Taiga (especially since the Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilus) is another subspecies of Brown Bear)
  • increase the aggression and overall danger level of both brown bears. With wolves, moose, and tigers having unique aggression behaviors, I would love to see these bears have something to help them live up to their reputations in bear country
  • Optional: Change the Warning Call. While I understand that this means the bears won't sound as "cool," add the chuffing and teeth clacking that bears do irl when stressed, rather than issuing what is essentially a challenge to the player

Feel free to discuss below! I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions ^-^

^another thing I wanted to add but didn't have the word space for: Fix the grizzly bear's weird perpetual grin. It's silly and all, but bears don't actually do that lol

sly dagger
#

Immediately agree with all of this

The grizzlies also have extremely weird looking paws when placed on a wall mount or standing up on a full body mount

#

do devs listen to the community btw? like is there likelihood that they will add this?

sly dagger
#

Sadly somewhat unlikely until grizzlies and brown bear are added to another map

azure garden
#

The devs do very much listen, I know a few suggestions here have actually been discussed with the devs (notably Africa 2.0), so it's not impossible
I do know that Jaxy said that most of their focus on animal TLCs are when they're involved with new content (like the Water Buffalo and Blackbuck TLCs with Sundarpatan, or the Red Fox TLC that will be with Salzwiesen Park)

so hopefully they will fix it then.. lots of animals ingame seem to have outdated models, specially the lion now that i see it

Standing brown bears look like they're about to box you 😭

Yeah definitely, that's something I mentioned in the post, it's weird that brown bears are only class 7 while grizzlies are class 8

I had no idea the grizzlies in-game are more like the Kodiak bears in terms of size

#

I know a big part of why I pushed for our brown bear to be renamed to "Eurasian Brown Bear" is bc both grizzly bears and eurasian brown bears are subspecies of Ursus arctos

#

meaning they're both Brown Bears by extension

#

Oh yeah, I mentioned the sounds in there too, and I wanna elaborate on that more

  • specifically change the Warning Call to the huffing and teeth clacking
  • if this suggestion's Aggression system goes in, the current Warning Call can be used as the attack sound, like how tigers and wolves growl at the player, or how bears become very vocal when attacking a threat
sly dagger
#

The current warning call could signal an incoming charge

azure garden
#

exactly

making bears genuinely dangerous, instead of "it might hit you a single time if you're close enough to sneeze on it" is a big thing I wanna see. They don't have to be as aggro as stuff like tigers and water buffaloes, but making them more likely to charge and attack would be perfect

#

I wanna feel like hunting in bear country has the potential to actually be dangerous. As of the past 3 years of playing, the only bear attacks I've had were either fleeing bears (status actually said Fleeing, not Aggressive) that happen to run through me, or that one albino bear from Medved's story

sly dagger
#

I've been attacked while calling them in, I initially panicked until it just slapped me and ran away. After that I was just kinda like "...oh, that's it?"

azure garden
#

I don't mind the state that black bears are in, as they're typically not prone to attacking humans unless they're conditioned to them, but there's a reason that hunters in grizzly territory carry gear specifically for that

sly dagger
#

Not to mention bears usually take a second to actually attack, they lower their heads and kinda just slow walk at you for a second. That behavior makes sense if they've been aggressive, but not when they go aggressive 10 feet away

And yeah, black bears are far more "docile" than brown bears of any kind. Grizzlies and brown bears are serious threats compared to em

azure garden
#

A bear attack in this game is honestly a non-issue unless you somehow were already at low health before it happened. I don't expect them to be as lethal as tigers are, but I definitely feel like they should pose a serious threat

sly dagger
#

Kinda like bison they just give you too much time to deal with them before they actually attack. If I startle a grizzly bear into aggression from 10 feet away, I highly doubt that bear is gonna let me react in time

Definitely shouldn't like- be an instant kill thing, especially with black bears who you could spook off easier, but they should feel dangerous

azure garden
#

I wouldn't mind if bears gave you a second or two of warning before actually charging for the sake of the game, but I do agree that basically every dangerous animal in this game is incredibly easy to deal with

  • tigers get a pass bc they actually instantly kill you to my knowledge and their actual attack is really fast
  • moose take too long and move really slowly
  • bison are a joke
  • cape buffaloes, banteng, and water buffaloes are painfully slow and barely hurt (bison too ofc)
  • bears just pat you on the back and run off
  • wolves circle you more than they attack (and while wolf attacks irl are incredibly rare, it's kinda lame that they're an aggressive species in-game but a negligible threat)
  • you can hear crocodiles from a mile away, and they also kinda just dont hurt
  • pig attacks don't really scare me either
sly dagger
#

My hearing is absolute garbage so tigers are a death sentence to me lol. I feel making wolves less aggressive but more dangerous would be good for em though

azure garden
#

I'm not trying to take an elitist stance of "grrrr game too easy make it harder" bc I'm still a fairly casual player, I just want the dangerous animals to pose a real threat when they do attack
lol, "fairly casual player"

#

I remember gearing up to go explore Yukon Valley and setting up my Moradi as my bear defense tool, but then I remembered that bears are just a non-issue lol

sly dagger
#

I've got close to 700 hours now, I think. I don't want the game to be harder, but certain aggressive animals being aggressive just makes sense

The only maps I bring a defensive weapon to are Vurhonga, Sundarpatan and any wolf map

azure garden
#

Absolutely. I think the only times where I personally push for the game to genuinely be harder is when hunting stuff like water buffaloes and cape buffaloes (yknow, DANGEROUS GAME), and that's not even "grr game too easy," it's just me wanting some of the most dangerous animals to hunt irl to be dangerous in-game
And while bears aren't the absolute most dangerous animal to hunt, like I mentioned earlier, there's a reason outfitters and hikers alike in grizzly country bring gear specifically to deal with bears if needed

sly dagger
#

Let dangerous game be dangerous, that's what I want. Grizzly bears are pretty much the dangerous game in America

Africa just makes sense to be dangerous, and I always bring the .470 for cape buffalo but it's more fun than anything tearing through them from 10 meters away with it

azure garden
#

I agree. On top of improving the Grizzly Bear visually, I'd love for it (and the Eurasian Brown bear by extension) to be more dangerous to the player

sly dagger
#

Definitely. Somehow on a map with brown bears on it, the capercaillie reigns supreme as the most dangerous animal on Revontuli

I’d also really want them to fiercely protect feedzones, making it genuinely scary to stumble upon a moose kill on Yukon.

ooo yeah definitely

This sounds like something that could come with a possible Canadian Arctic Reserve ( #1070045518002147458 )

After all Grizzly Bears can live on the tundra
And I do recall a video making the rounds of a grizzly bear hunting muskox calves

Agression is a must!! They flee like a roe deer right now 💀

azure garden
#

it's specifically at closer range where the problem lies. Naturally I'd expect one to flee if it's spooked further out, but bumping one up close should be a dangerous encounter, not one where at most you get tapped and the bear runs off after that

I agree with most of this, but i actually like how long the Grizzlies claws are currently. The fur , face and eyes is the main thing that bothers me.

Really hope these guys get some tlc, honestly so many animals could use some love but I really haven’t hunted grizzly’s in this game cause of how weird they look
