This idea came up a few days ago in #1261684184758489139

There's enough time between maps/weapon packs to completely break down and rebuild one weapon at a time surely, you might be able to do 2 in some cases.

We'll use the Whitlock .30-30 as our example since it needs this almost more than any other weapon.

First step is to completely remove the old code for it and rebuild it from the ground up. The real world performance of this rifle is much closer to the 7.62x54r than .243 and the new code should reflect that.

The basic appearance of the weapon in the inventory and in hand is fine, no changes are really needed except for changing the sights to older buckhorn style rear sights.

The next big change is the scopes it can use. Modern versions of this weapon, and this is a replica according to your in game info, are typically equipped with a rail attached to the barrel where the rear sights usually sit. This could allow the Whitlock to use the Ascent 1-4 scope and red dots while still allowing you to use the lever action specific scope.

This rifle would also be using modern ammunition types, like polymer tipped bullets designed for tubular magazines. Hard cast bullets should be modeled on newer ammunition too.

This would also affect the maximum zero distance, it should be extended to 250 yards with the hard cast bullet having more drop.

The result is a 3-7 class weapon for the base game that's reasonably competitive with the DLC ONLY Solokhin 7.62x54r

The magazine should hold 6 rounds, that's the normal amount for the model this rifle was based on.

Coachmate .45-70

For a long time this rifle has been overlooked because despite being one of the only 2 class 4-9 weapons in the game it's been ignored for the 7mm's much greater range and variety of optics.

This rifle may not need the entire code stripped and rebuilt but it would certainly help. I'd rather see this rifle rebuilt and classed the same as the 9.3x74r Grelck drilling at 5-9.

It's extremely useful, but other weapons are better for smaller game like whitetail deer.

This model of weapon actually has a Flat topped receiver which means it has the same mounting style as the Moradi .44 and should be able to use all the normal scopes in the game.

The recent ammo change that came with the Jernberg pistol did not apply the Coachmate for some reason. The maximum zero of the rifle should be increased to 250 yards to reflect that it has a longer barrel and achieves higher velocity than the pistol.

The model for this weapon seems fine but the only difference I'd really like to see is a longer barrel.

Last, the Malmer 7mm made this rifle even less appealing because of its 4 round magazine compared to the Coachmate's 3. So I'd recommend the Coachmate be changed to 4 rounds, which is common for this model of rifle and competes a bit more evenly with the Malmer.

This rifles hard cast ammunition should have much higher penetration, on the same level as the .454 revolver at the least. For soft point ammo the .45-70 can benefit from the same type of flexible polymer tip bullets the .30-30 should be using

I don't expect them to be overpowered like the Moradi but at least good enough to make them something you can use.

They ain't nerf guns, they're both over a hundred years old and proven to put meat on the table

You’ll notice this is with the 30-30. Yeah it did the job from a reasonable range, but i’d like to see a faster bleed rate. Took so long to track even with a vital hit. Irl that shouldve put it down a lot sooner and have seen it done
