The reserve name means mountains of Heaven. The more common chinese name is Tian Shan

Balbals
Throughout the reserve’s valleys can be found short statues of mustached men whispering a story of ancient Turk nomads
Ak kalpak
A white and black conical hat that is similar to that of a snow capped mountain. The snow capped mountains are the first thing mentioned in the Kyrgyz anthem.
Komuz
A three stringed fretless lute that is quite difficult to play, it is a melodic light lute that can be slung to the back.
Manas’ tomb
Manas was a Kyrgyz hero who united the 40 tribes of the Kyrgyz, he had defended his homeland against many invaders with his son and grandson following his legacy. The epic poem of his, is one of the longest in the world. While some doubt his existence, his legacy is enduring
