save issues

I was playing the African missions fine and was able to load the game properly. The next morning there was a save conflict, I chose iCloud and all of an African reset including the introduction. Also a couple of Hiresfleten missions reset but thankfully only the last two. I’m making backups just in case, but how does this happen.
