#Discuss the new tent placement change

Okay so recently with the latest update we have been shown that EW has changed the distance that animals will render after a player fast travels to a tent.

Currently if you place a tent down within 200 to 250m of an animal heard that the animals will not render.. For all intensive purposes they will be invis to the player for a certain period of time after fast traveling to a tent or Outpost.

That is how it works currently but with the new update being release on Jun 18, 2024 that has been changed.

Under the new update you will be able to place a tent in the center of an animal zone and if you fast travel to that tent while the animals are in the zone, you will be able to see them immediately and kill them.

To see this demonstrated by one of the content creators see this video here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve6N_UA7Rf0

The content creator has also verified with @dusky grove that is is an intentional change and not a bug.

My personal opinion as well as the content creator ( @bleak widget ) is that this change is way too over powered.

This thread is to get the communities opinion on this with the hopes that EW will respond and change this to something more in line with the previous mechanic ….

What are your thoughts? Please be respectful and think about the long term outcome for this game if this change is allowed to stay as is ....

Actually, I think it's great. πŸ˜‚
But I get why some might not like it.

#

FYI, I'm not a grinder so most of my tents are not next to lakes. This gives me a lot more options of how I can place them now without disturbing resting and feeding zones.

It doesn't bother me at all. I fine if they keep it that way or change the distance further away. I'm not in competition with anyone and I would never see anyone's lodge anyway. I could care less how other people choose to play or what trophys they have. Personally i only use the lodge to enjoy the beauty of the animals antlers and fur displayed.

It gives people options to choose how they play. We don't have to play that way if we don't want to. But like I said I don't care if they increase the distance or keep it how the new update is.

i think its good, might help some people who want to grind easier, though i think maybe a minimum of 75 - 100 meters might be better. but i dont mind the change

also, i've seen a lot of posts of people wanting great ones to be easier, i think this could be it

I think it's good It will give you more realism as long as the animals continue to be scared when they appear there, at least it reduces the abuse of that mechanic for grinding..
Currently you place the tent on the edge of the lake, teleport there, shoot the animals on the other side and when you go to pick up the dead ones the animals magically appear on the other side of the lake where the tent is. It is the most "arcade" mechanic in CotW.

How much easier does this game have to get before people are satisfied

Lady Legend seemed to say it differently in one of her videos. She said something about it being changed to 200m so she could put a tent in the middle of a zone that is 200m away from another zone (which is pretty close) and just bounce back and forth between them. She didn't demonstrate this, though, but no matter which version is true I'm fine with it because I'll never do it so it doesn't affect me. If others want to play that way that is their choice.

Well, They could allow 4 more tents per map, setting the limit at 20. Then another 10 loadout slots would really cater fabulously for the diverse range of hunting play styles this game offers now. Increase skill levels to at least 70 or 80 for the very same reason. Alternatively, decrease the cost of resetting skills/perks significantly to like 5k credits, just like dogs. Um. What else? Those are just the ones off the top of my head. But don't worry. None of these things will ruin your personal gameplay. Because what other people do with their game is their business.

You realize I'll still be playing the same game so I'll still be affecting by any changes right? So will everyone else. Yeah it's people's business what they do in their own games but it's the communities collective business to make sure the game is changed to satisfy a majority. I just haven't seen any sort of majority demand for this change at all. Hence my question. It's basically a brain dead practice to mow down dozens of deer per hour at this point using HM I'm just curious what would prompt the change to make this even easier. Just doesn't make sense to me.

hasty lion
# high moth I’m still scratching my head on this, has anyone been pushing for this on Discor...

It's quite possible that there was a mechanical conflict that was occurring and this may have been the simplest solution. Since the December update tents and items have been popping off the maps at a crazy rate. I have had to replace every tent on every map - 224 in total - including blinds etc. It's been regularly happening in Jaxy's stream too. Anyway, that's my guess but I could be wrong.
Either way, I like it. I won't be moving any tents though but I like having more choices. Grinders will exploit regardless but I don't care. It's their game to play how they want and none of my business at the end of the day.

# high moth Oh! 😯

Yep, it was real annoying. Most of the tents were on completely flat surfaces since I had bought the tent DLC 12+ months ago. For whatever reasons they're doing this, I hope it fixes that 'beaver' issue. Fingers crossed, 🀞

kind ember
#

I have had the max number of tents per map on half the maps and have only had to replace 2 in the past year because of pathing. The reason it says a beaver has fallen on and damaged your tent and removes it is because when you load into a map it randomly places tracks where animals should have walked recently depending on the time. If it happens to place a track directly through your tent, it will remove it as if something came by and got tangled in it (which sometimes happens IRL). I keep aware of where I've never or rarely seen tracks in a given area and place my tents there.

I love using the bow. For a bit I had gotten rid of Zeroing and Aim Wobble perks to grab Like a Pro. It's so much fun. But to do it when not being able to judge the scent direction properly seems like a good time

hasty lion
#

Well, lets swap our games and you can have at it. Haha.
Okay, back on topic. So with this weird tent bug thing, I'm hoping this new change will resolve that.
Ultimately, I think it is a good thing. How people use it in their own gameplay does not bother me. I'm a bow and field hunter mostly so this is going to be great for me.

I would also like to know why they chose to make this change.

This change bothers me because COTW has been labeled as an arcade hunting game and this change just pretty much solidifies that label.

For those who say β€œwell I wont use tents that way so it doesn't affect me”... I think that's being a little short sighted

I think for the longevity of the game this will hurt the games credibility rather than help it.
Less credibility in the market place means less players playing it and ultimately less new players willing to give it a try... So if the game suffers in the market place because of stuff like this we are all directly impacted by it....
Once videos begin to circulate demonstrating how easy and ridiculous it is to kill animals in this game I think it will fall off the radar...

Up to this point they have managed to strike a balance between sim and arcade hunting but if this change remains in effect then that balance has been pretty much destroyed . I don't think this is a good move for the game long term and if the revenue goes away then so does HCOTW and that will affect us all ….

hasty lion
#

This is an arcade hunting game. They've said that very recently on stream. The entire spawning system is arcade. It's the reason why I love this game.

I can guarentee you this will have zero affect on the market perception on its perception of he game. Just by the few responses here, most people couldn't care less and new comers won't even be aware of the change.

There are already hundreds of videos posted on this forum giving the impression of easy diamond and GO kills.

Trust me, this will have far less impact than you think.

stuck mist
#

Up to this point Diamonds and GO are not easy mainly because you must put the time into the game to spawn them.... And for me to put the time into the game that means I have to take the game seriously .... I can no longer take this game seriously with these kinds of mechanics in play ...

Maybe this is just my perception but I think people who take hunting seriously will not put much time into it …. Whether they personally use this mechanic or not ….

hasty lion
#

To be fair, I think that is your perception and probably not shared by the majority. To suggest that people don't take hunting seriously (or even gamers), based upon your perception of how a game should be, is kind of insulting. With all due respect, because I agree with you on most things, your last comments sounds more like sour grapes. I appreciate that you're not happy but I'm going to politely disagree with on this topic and move on.

stuck mist
#

We all have our perceptions you have yours and I have mine ... Who is to say which is wrong or right ? I never said people don't take hunting serious .... Some know what hunting is about and some don't.... Mechanics like these cheapen the hunting experience to the point that it no longer resembles hunting .... Again just my perception and not sour grapes as you say .... And if I want to play an arcade shooter there are many other options out there that do that sort of thing much better. But that's not what I'm looking for ....

hasty lion
#

Fair enough, but this game IS an arcade hunting 'shooter'. You kill, you get a reward and it respawns. It is why it is so successful and why this won't change anything. Most people who have the game will probably not even be aware of the tent update.
In the hunting genre, COTW has the highest daily player statistics. There are other hunting games that are not arcade and focus more on simulation. They're not doing as well as COTW though. And that's the perspective I'm coming from.

stuck mist
#

"COTW has the highest daily player statistics. "
This is currently an accurate statistic but my perception is that with mechanics like this in play that statistic will not last ....

Other games that are more hardcore sim will have to soften their approach to survive and they are already doing that … as I said previously there is a balance to be maintained and IMO the devs have lost that balance with this change … I hope they take the steps to correct their mistake ….

lime whale

For me there's no difference in spawning on top of a bunch of animals and killing them all with an AR vs running them down on horseback and killing a bunch. At thus point EW is taking all the "hunt" out of a hunting game. Weird.

It has been a really good discussion. It's nice when things can be kept civil.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I'm very eager to see the full update list.

Right, I have to be out for the day. I wish everyone a good day too. See you all in here later!

If theres anything good with the change, is that grinding with a bow will be viable and not a crazy tought πŸ˜…

@steady geode It's completely nuts. I'm not sure but I'm becoming more convinced that it is a bug. Will do a post in Support about this sometime this week, hopefully.
The image below is the last chart I made of the wind's directional change each hour over 4 hours whilst doing a deer hunt with a bow. It involved a lot of cursing.
This pattern of change is typical and occurs frequently in my game.

The visible environment is dead calm though. πŸ˜‚

Yes I was a little disappointed that @dusky grove got distracted and didnt spend much time talking about this .... but he did kind of say that it wasn't working exactly as intended ..... I find it hard to believe though that this is the way it has been working for years now and was really a bug that they are just getting around to fixing .....
