My dog doesn't give me much protection from am animal/predator attack but he does give me warning. Please adjust the Dogs AI so that they will get between the hunter and the danger. Currently they just whimper or growl and run in circles and I find myself glassing around frantically looking for the danger. But If our dogs know where the scent is coming from they should give some directional indication.
This could also be part of the dogs training. So if you don't want the dog to protect the hunter then choose an alternate skill / trait ...
