This is the map I want waterfowl most, some of these have limited legal hunting some are none game but unprotected and shootable.

The bay I marked on the picture would host all the species besides paradise shelleuck and Cape barren goose even if not mentioned in the home range
Species marked with a ? Might not be legal or only limited legality

? New Zealand scaup (both coasts)

? Brown teal (the lakes on the eastern part of the map)

Paradise shelleuck ( low elevation grasslands of the map)

Grey teal and black duck (map wide besides coast)

Australian shoveler (on all lakes and the bay in the nort west)

Black swan (map wide in low numbers)

Cape barren goose (mountains)

I hope I made a good mix

This is the area where you would find all the species besides geese and shellducks

From what I have been able to find regarding the Cape Barren Goose: They can only be hunted on Flinders Island in Australia, also found this web page when looking into Cape Barrens in New Zealand: https://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/cape-barren-goose#:~:text=The Cape Barren goose is,population that persisted until 1946. Also a side note but the Grey Teal is apparently off limits to hunting in New Zealand and so are Brown Teal & Scaup (https://fishandgame.org.nz/game-bird-hunting-in-new-zealand/getting-started/our-new-zealand-game-bird-species/protected-species-not-hunted/). On the other hand the Pukeko or Australasian Swamphen can be hunted

Cape barren geese are very rare here with only very few populations introduced from Australia. They also have never been listed as a legal gamebird species by NZ fish & game to my knowledge, I could be wrong but I’ve been waterfowling here for many years and never seen them listed in any region (I did some research and the population could be as small as only 18 geese in the whole country lol).

#

Brown teal, grey teal and New Zealand scaup are completely protected and cannot be hunted.

#

Our legal duck species are mallards, grey ducks (we don’t call them black ducks in NZ), paradise shelducks and Australasian shovelers.

#

Black swans and pūkeko are also legal waterfowl to hunt here.

#

Canada geese and greylag geese (technically just feral domestic geese as wild greylags were never released in NZ to my knowledge) are listed as a pest species and can be hunted all year with any firearm. Greylags aren’t very common though especially when compared to the massive numbers of Canada geese.
