The .338 bolt action was supposed to be a rifle to rival the .300 canning magnum but it failed to do that because it's not considerably more powerful than the .300, and is heavier than the .300 by 1 weight unit and also has a slower fire rate.
Now with the .300 AR added to the game it makes the .338 even less viable. It needs a buff. It's the best way to balance it out to compete with the .300. When it comes to choosing your big game rifle, it should be down to preferance, not one rifle being considerably better and the other being left to collect dust.

I really want to use the .338 bolt action as my preferred choice without knowing I got objectively better options for that class range

Hey phoenix enforcer,

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding the .338 rifle! Your insights into its performance compared to the .300 rifles are valuable for us to consider in balancing the game.

We understand your point about wanting the .338 to be a more competitive option, especially with the introduction of the .300 AR. Balancing the rifles to ensure player preference rather than one being significantly superior is indeed crucial for a satisfying gameplay experience.

Your proposed buffs for the .338, with increased penetration and expansion values, seem well-considered and could potentially address the balance concerns you've raised.

We've taken note of your suggestions and will certainly discuss them with the rest of the team.

If you have any more ideas or feedback to share, feel free to reach out to us anytime. We're here to listen!

And remember, if you have any other suggestions or feedback, don't hesitate to contact us via our support portal: https://support.thehunter.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Happy hunting!

They said on the stream that any weapon balancing is not in the roadmap rn so I highly doubt they would change anything

The only possibility is that they would make a dlc with another weapon that uses the .338 calibre, in which case they would most like update it

The .338 definitely needs to be noticeably more powerful than the 300. Depending on which 338 it’s supposed to be would determine how much more. The 338 win mag (more popular for hunting) isn’t a ton more powerful than a 300 win mag. It has lower muzzle velocities but a heavier bullet giving it more energy on target at the cost of a worse trajectory. The 338 lapua magnum is substantially more powerful shooting the same bullet as the win mag at close to (or faster than) 300 win mag velocities.

Yeah i have to assume that’s what they were going for. 55-60 pen with the higher pen ammo would feel about right and the 300 could be bumped up just a tad with its stats so it’s not equal to a .308 Winchester (but I think we all know how unrealistic the cartridge stats are). Honestly I’m not a fan on that gun because it just doesn’t feel like a hunting rifle. The one way of the hunter has would’ve made a little more sense imo.

Yeah the 308 and 7mm bolts have been my favorite

I think that this ties back to the idea that they should spend a whole update's worth of redoing ballistics to make them more realistic. .223 buff was nice but it still massively under penetrates, and all across the board soft points are tossed aside as "A beginner's only option". Make ballistics realistic! They don't want to make the game too easy, but these rifles and bullets do massive damage for a reason. Game balance should not entail that .223 remington or 6.5 Creedmoor penetrates four inches at best! Are you kidding me? Buckshot, .270, and .338 that you mentioned. Feels really limiting knowing that the ballistic performance is massively hindered from what it is in reality.
