#ducks landing in blind

My ducks will always land on me when I am using a caller with a blind and decoys about 60 yards away. I used to hunt a lot of ducks but won't anymore because the first of a group will land on me and flee taking the rest of the group with it. I think ducks need to land around the decoys, like it used to be, instead of on the caller.

Hello,
Thanks for letting us know about ducks landing on top of players. We'll investigate the landing pattern of waterfowl and look into adjusting the behavior once we successfully reproduce this!
Community input helps us spot areas in need of improvement, so please feel free to notify us via our support portal if you happen to spot any other inconsistencies: https://support.thehunter.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I have stopped waterfowl hunting for this very reason. Although the labrador has offered a lot fun to waterfowl hunting it is kind of pointless when all the ducks and geese ignore the decoys and land on you or at your feet instead. And often out of sight of the scope range so you can't shoot them anyway. Waterfowl hunting is due for a massive overhaul considering we have such great devices for it now.

I have a post on this very subject with videos attached (see Waterfowl Landing on top of my Head Post in cotw-feedback). Glad more are noticing this! Prioritize the decoys spread and not the hunter like when the game first came out.

for sure! I even have videos of a massive flock of mallards landing all around my red ATV

Are you on PC or console?

I'm on PC but this issue has plagued the game even on console.

silver panther
#

Yup. I'm on console. Xbox

I don't expect them to always land on the decoys or e-caller but those devices should be where they focus their landing area 80%+ of the time.

#

Used to not be like this. every once in a great while you'd get a bird landing on top of you IF you setup really tight inside of your decoys spread like in a goose field. But now it's literally every hunt.

#

I've had this game on Xbox since its release and now play on PC so I am aware of most the updates that started causing these issues with the Waterfowl Hunting.

Interesting. I've only been playing a year so no earlier reference. I don't what it is like on PC but my ducks zoom around the sky like hornets. IRL ducks do not dart around like sparrows.

# silver panther Interesting. I've only been playing a year so no earlier reference. I don't what...

The definitely upped the speed across all the waterfowl which is okay for some of the part, but when they flair they ZOOM! They used to just fly up and away more so like real birds but the changes have made it stranger. ALSO, when geese land, they complete their animation about a foot above the ground then just magically float into place. I could make a list of all the weird quirks this game has now lol.

Yeah, waterfowl need a complete workover.

I put in a request to be a game advisor they were advertising specifically on Waterfowl for the game so hopefully I get some kind of response.

I really hate to say it, but there are other games where waterfowl hunting is such a dream. Still challenging but the speed, flight and landing is so much better and it really shows that the mechanics are possible to make this part of the game much more fun.

For me, COTW is by far the best hunting game out there. It has so much more to offer than anything else but there are a couple of areas that it could improve on, Such as waterfowl hunting. Way of the Hunter has nailed this down pretty well.

Classic is on PC so I'll never know. LOL. WOTH is the only real competitor but the game doesn't allow grinding or isn't flexible with time management which is a mistake, imo. It's a nice game but it basically has one play style and it'll be years before they catch up to COTW. I like the hunting in RDR2 and they have horses too. So awesome.

RDR2 hunting was very fun. If you see any Hunter Classic waterfowl hunting you'd be blown away. It's really really nice just costly for gear. If you do F2P it's VERY grindy.

Anyways back to topic so I have had some thought and me and river are going to be giving waterfowl advice and tips and problems and maybe how we can solve this issue, maybe it's just some tweaks in the decoys but we will keep yall updated thanks

#

You typically want to create a realistic-looking spread with decoys scattered around your blind or hunting spot. Try to mimic how ducks naturally gather on the water. Experiment with different configurations, but a common setup involves placing decoys in a "J" or "U" shape with your blind at the open end to attract ducks into your shooting range. Remember to adjust your spread based on wind direction and other environmental factors for optimal results.

#

Reposition your blind: Move your blind further away from the decoys to create a more natural landing zone for the ducks. This should encourage them to land in front of you rather than on top of you.

Adjust decoy spread: Spread out your decoys further away from your blind to create a larger landing area for the ducks. This will reduce the chances of them landing directly on top of you

.Use motion decoys: Consider adding motion decoys, such as spinning wing decoys or decoys with built-in movement, to your spread. This can attract ducks from a distance and encourage them to land in the designated area.

Change your position: If ducks persistently land on top of you, try relocating to a different hunting spot where you can set up your blind and decoys in a way that minimizes this behavior.

Experiment with these adjustments to find the best setup for attracting ducks while avoiding them landing directly on top of you.

Let me know if yall like

I've done all that and more. Makes no difference. None of that works. I'd rather they just fix the current mechanics and make it better.

Another thing I've noticed with mallards for me is I can't get diamonds or rares that aren't initial spawns. I've killed 3-4k grinding but haven't gotten anything good that wasn't in a feed zone. It doesn't happen with any other birds though.

Is there a fix in sight for this? I just tried hunting ducks in revontuli, but have the same issue. ducks try landing on me, get scared, and flee.

I have set up decoys, use the electronic caller, and sit in a ground blind.

Peoples look at the wind if you just place some decoys you will fail. Ducks will always land in the green zone place decoys about 30 meters from yourself into the wind and the ducks or geese should land perfect

# low wraith O_o I need to test this tomorrow, thanks!

how did your trials go?

I just tried this in a high seat in layton lake, and ducks flew directly towards me and landed around and even under the high seat, even though the caller was 50 m away. so i'm still convinced this is buggy

or the ducks land nowhere near the decoys

The same is happening in duck island from Revontuli. When a flock of ducks is going to land, there is always atleast one that tries to land on me 😡

I just tried to do this hunting club mission with ducks. gave up now, it's almost 5 in the morning ...

Needless to say, I tried just about every setup I thought feasible. Camo tents, high seats, both fixed and portable, the ground blind, that thing you lie down in. Both the electronic caller and the "manual" callers. Only one constant result: ducks fly at my face, no matter what. As soon as the first one flys at my face, the whole flock becomes aware and then panics. Impossible to wait for them to settle down to line up for multiple shots.

It's ANNOYING! This needs to be fixed.

The more time I spend hunting Ducks, or geese, it appears this is a general bug! Even when only using decoys, the ducks won't land at the decoy but at or around the player. I set up decoys 25-30 meters away from my ground blind, and EVERY SINGLE TIME at least one or two ducks decide they want to LAND IN MY FACE! of course this will spook the whole flock, so every time it messes up aligning some shots or picking out the higher rated ducks, because of course, higher rated animals tend to be more careful and land last. So in these cases the lower level ducks will land at my face, get spooked, and the higher level ones never even touch the ground...

PLEASE EW FIX IT!

#

Seriously it makes me want to give up on duck hunting in this game right now. It's making me go mad..
i'm setting up decoys and the e-caller 50 meters away. again, the first duck LANDS 1 meter next to my blind!!!!!

I just have a 0% rate of them actually landing at the caller or decoys. and of course as long as none of the grinders, youtube partners or EW staff is personally invested, this stuff will never get fixed, see "sticky bush noises" bug.

honestly, I will log off for today, i'll just work myself up. 30 minutes of COTW for the day should be enough anyways right....

I agree. Waterfowl could really do with a rework and some love from EW. They feel so neglected. The labrador is great but pointless if all the ducks land on you.
FYI, I don't ever get the waterfowl to land by the decoys. That never happens but they should land nearby and not on you. But they do anyway. I sit on a tripod about 90-100 metres away from the e-caller - like I said, I don't bother with decoys anymore. At this range, about half will land on me and the others will land about 50 metres and sometimes up to 150m away. I carry the zarza for those long shots but mostly use a shotgun.
Anyway, give that distance a go. It's not great but it's the best distance I have found so far. In my experience, if I'm under 50 metres, everything lands on me. Anyway I hope you get some luck with it. I'd be taking short break too.

Hear hear, tend to experience the same as the folks above ^ Doesn't seem to matter what I do, wind direction does not seem to matter at all. Would love to see this fixed at some point in the near future as I do love hunting me some waterfowl πŸ™‚
