#Rework The Siberian Musk Deer

I personally think that the species in the game that needs a rework the most is the Siberian Musk Deer of Medved Taiga, which currently just looks like a smaller version of the Roe Deer with tusks stuck on its face. That's a real shame because in real life the Siberian Musk Deer looks really unique and interesting, it's one of the coolest ungulates in the entire world in my opinion. This species deserves a new model and new textures, because real Siberian Musk Deer look vastly different from how they currently look in the game. Let's show this unique little creature some love.

So yeah, geographically it doesn't make sense to have Siberian Musk Deer in that region of Siberia. However, if we're gonna have them on Medved, I figure that they might as well look good!

but like I said, since Medved is the only Siberian map we have for now, I'm not going to make a huge fuss about having animals on the map that are from other parts of Siberia. I just want all of them to look good in the game.

I agree on why we have the musk deer in the game at all .... Consider the black tail which is only on Layton because it's home range is just not that large ... But with Musk deer the devs dont seem to have a problem with this ... I also agree if they are in the game they need to at least look correct

It is because Medved Taiga is not fixed at a specific point on the map, it is a recreation of the entire Siberian region, in the same way that Layton Lakes is the Pacific Northwest, or Hirschfelden is Central Europe with its center in Germany.

There is even a representation of the Lena River and the Lena Pillars that are in the East of Russia within Medved map..

But speaking of the central theme of the thread, yes, these poor little deer need some love, their fur always looked dirty and uneven and they are a little chubby too xD

Hmm, after looking up the location where those pillars are IRL, it looks like Medved is just meant to be a general Siberian map. The overall landscape is pretty varied after all, implying that they probably took inspiration from many places in Russia.

In that case, I'm really not sure why some people have insisted that it's specifically based on the Yamal Peninsula/that general region, maybe it's because of something in Medved's story missions. We've seen that the lore of the Medved story missions is really not followed that strictly though, since EW added wolves to the map despite the story missions stating that wolves were extirpated from the reserve.

So I guess the map is just a conglomeration of different elements of Siberia, with no real attempt made to represent one particular region of it and no strict limit on what can be included as long as it's something that exists in Siberia. Honestly that's fine with me because it's the only reason why we got Musk Deer in the game to begin with. I just hope that EW gives the Musk Deer the rework that they deserve.

Now I kind of want to make a post detailing all of the ways Medved Taiga can be improved, the same way I did for Layton and Yukon Valley.

The reason people assumed Medved was based somewhere around the Yamal peninsula was because the game specifically references the Nenets people as the native inhabitants of the reserve in-game. They are native to the region IRL but are also found eastwards into the Taymyr Peninsula (where I personally believed the map was set). It would have made more sense if EW referenced an eastern Siberian people considering the inclusion of musk deer, but as you said I believe Medved is supposed to represent an anachronism of the entirety of Siberia. A more eastern setting, Yakutia for instance, would have been better I think to further justify the addition of snow sheep or even Manchurian sika to the species list.

I think I'm going to make a concept for how Medved Taiga can be improved, similar to what I did for Yukon Valley and Layton Lakes. Obviously Musk Deer, Reindeer, Wild Boar and Gray Wolf should get reworked. I think Eurasian Lynx look alright currently, they could maybe use a little touch up on their faces, but other than that I think they're pretty good currently. Obviously the Northern Lights from Revontuli would be a good addition to both Medved and Yukon. Are there any other animals on the map that deserve a rework? I can't think of any personally.

Are there any particular species that you think would be a good addition to Medved? I have a few in mind already but I want to hear what you guys think.

Was just hunting on Medved again and was reminded of how outdated the musk deer really look. They really deserve a good rework.

the females especially just look... awful. That orange coloration, in the snowy landscape of Medved, gosh they just look so out of place.

just them reworking the Musk Deer alone and making them look more like their real life counterparts, would be enough to make me play Medved way more than I do currently. That's even if they don't backfill any more species on the map.

but on a more serious note, look at this picture of a captive Musk Deer. The current COTW Musk Deer looks like a terrible imitation of the real thing.

I just realized that it has now been just over a year since I originally posted this thread. Let's hope that EW will show this species some love! As far as I know, the Musk Deer have looked pretty much exactly the same ever since Medved Taiga was released, which was a very long time ago now. In my opinion this is one of the top ten species that deserve a rework the most.

if we get another Siberian map eventually (totally possible since Asia is still a mostly untouched continent in COTW at this point), I think it could benefit from including the reworked Siberian Musk Deer as a returning species.

With unfortunately bigger tusks than a diamond musk deer.

I was looking up the rifle to post elsewhere when I noticed it, but with our musk deer the tusks just don't stand out unless you get them in the lodge. I'd at least like to be able to see them when the deer are broadside but if they recolored the deer's fur a little it would be easier to see and judge without spotting

One of my first dimes, knew next to nothing about the game, including that some animals maxed at lvl 3. Shot him and he was diamond, super cool memory. Would really like to see them redone, but personally I think some other animals need it more. Love these toothy guys though.z_muskdeer

I today saw a video of a live musk deers scent glands beeing taken in nepal, that looked very gruesome, a lot of Asian people (indian, nepali, Russian and Chinese) praised it for its medicinal value and stuff...
