#German Shorthaired Pointer: The Case for Another Dog

With the introduction of the Labrador Retriever, there is still at least one style of dog the game could use. Looking back toward Classic, it is an obvious choice. We need a dog that not only finds prey. But, flushes them as needed. We need the German Shorthaired Pointer.

Having experienced Hunting Simulator 2's version of the GSP (German Shorthaired Pointer), and Classic's version of the venerable hound, I believe the best choice is to combine both game's systems into one context-sensitive wheel. We know from the dogs in-game now that the wheel is context-sensitive already (to what degree, we don't know), and that lends itself to the image below for a GSP addon and what that might look like in-game with traits and the context-sensitive wheels.

A lot of this is converted from Classic, making sure that need-not-apply traits are removed. With that, we have traits that players are more likely to choose, depending on what kind of dog they want on their hunt. All the traits feel worthwhile but may be fleshed out into something more if needed.

Why this dog is needed:

  1. Having a dog to help new and old players find and spot elusive prey like hares/rabbits or upland game birds.
  2. Having a dog who will alert the player sooner of critical position moments where animals might flee, especially while tracking.
  3. Having a dog who can flush Class 1 animals when you are ready to take the shot. Notable for upland game birds as points are only awarded when they are airborne (No more running at the bird and jumping to make it fly).
  4. Having a dog who will track most animals and point right at them (This helps new players especially as they might not understand tracking at first).
  5. Having another reason when hunting with friends to have different types of dogs out (GSP's flushing and retriever's retrieving).

If anyone has any additional thoughts/comments. Please feel free to add them!

great suggestion, a pointer is probably the most essential dog that the game is missing

Don't think we're getting another dog until GTA 6

In Xbox, hunting quail is an exercise in futility. Not to mention the rabbits on Hirsch. This would making hunting small game enjoyable and a ‘real option.’

It would be so coool if it could tree bears, trashies or cougars when you have 3 or more also I would love a 5 dog maximum limit

Right?! But even with the basic ability to find all of those critters and perhaps "Pin" them with a point... That would be super helpful to a hunter.

#

I want this to be how they do things (IF they can!) If not anything similar to how they do in classic would still be acceptable.

A pointer would be a very welcome addition. It would be nice to have a dog capable of finding, freezing, ‘setting’ on quarry, and then flushing (on command). Minimally, this should include all upland birds (quail, pheasant, capercaillie, etc) and rabbits.

bumping for visibility.

And yes, being able to flush on command would make hunting certain animals a joy. Gives a reason to not pack just all around gear and do just a straight pheasant or rabbit hunt with a shotgun and a dog.

Agreed! Teach new players how to hunt and flush with animals you only get credit for on the wing.

I see a lot of chatter around wanting more missions too. I think if they do settle on a new dog by the end of the year, that the DLC pack should also include generic side missions that don't require voice acting and are basically a companion on how best to use the dog.

There are many types of pointer breeds and are really mainly used for hunting upland birds ...

Pointers should be trained to hunt only one or maybe 2 types of upland birds as they will get confused otherwise. This is realistically how they are trained and a dog used to point 2 types of birds will not be as good as a dog used to point one type of bird ... So in their training tree there will be a branch where you can select what type of bird they will be used for

They will also retrieve the birds that they are trained to hunt. This would require you to have multiple pointer breeds/dogs in your kennel trained to hunt different birds For example one dog to hunt Pheasant and another dog to hunt quail or Ptarmigan

Exactly, like a pin and flush move for the dog and player to utilize, that would be quite a helpful feature as well as tracking target prey down.

Pretty sure pointers are comming. If you watched the video released long ago of making the dog, they showed labs,I think the hound was interesting and a pointer was def in there. Guessing they're just working on its mechanics. Just my guess. Doubt they'd have the pointer in the vid if they weren't part of their plan. The pheasants have never properly worked in the game but still pretty fun to hunt bit would be even funner to have a dog point them out to us!
