This seems to work. You just lose your proggress completely and after using a back-up file I managed to run the game, but later when I tried to play, the same issue was back.

got the same error as VINNI. sometimes game lauches, but other times severealt even despite numerous tries the same problem. One of my friends also gets this freeze. @slim jay after this soulution you lose your progress and start with completely new hunter with no experience?

Due diligence:

  1. disable any mods ... which you're not supposed to use for a reason—they frequently break the game, especially after an update. Also remove any command launch options / modifications.

  2. update your drivers, and OS. Use DSIM and SFC/scannnow to make sure your OS is healthy and check your drives and all applicable hardware
    How to clean up Windows 10:
    while on the internet,
    search CMD
    open command prompt using 'Run as administrator' option
    enter command between><

cd ..< (should show [root directory]/Windows
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth<
Let it run till it tells you it's finished.
Enter command between>< >SFC /scannow<
Let it run till it tells you it's finished.

This should clear up any errors in your OS. Will it stop your crashing? Maybe, maybe not. But it certainly can't hurt. It sure beats reinstalling Windows.

I run this fairly often, and find that windows 10 is usually messed up in some degree.

3)a.Verify game files on Steam.
3)b. Remove any overclocking or custom modifications.

RESTART or Hard REBOOT
(Shut down comp. turn off / unplug power supply. Press power button for a few seconds till light goes out. Turn on / Plug in PSU. Turn on comp.)

4)If you're still having 'bugs' zip your save and send it—along with your bug report—via the support portal

i asked a refund on steam due to broken product. Yet I'm considering reinstalling windows because I really like this game alot

I have 1700 hours into the game. If I can’t play or get my progress back, I don’t know what I’d do. I backup my saves like everyone suggests and one bad release is going to ruin my 5 years’ dedication to this game

This is ridiculous I deleted my save game (made a backup) and the game works fine, if I put my backup files back the game crashes on startup…..

Okay I fixed it…. Had an backup file from 6 months ago. Opened the COTW file then saves then the numbers folder and then slots. Put the slots file in my corrupted save game and everything works fine and didn’t lose any progress 😁

i deleted files (for me they were in onedrive diredtory: c:\Users\YOURNAME\onedrive - you can search cotw in c:/users to locate them). now game starts, sadly i have to start with completely new game. hope it wont happen again. good hunting guys.

The folders called 'slots' in the save directory are also backups. Try using them and see if it loads. COTW backup tool is a lifesaver.

one thing that may (or may not) have impact on stability is location of save files. While i had them in onedrive directory it crashed. once i deactivated onedrive and files are on HDD game runs wihout a problem.

Did you mod your Game ?
Have you ever had a Problem with the Steam Cloud service ?

Okay please look at this.

Open your Documents and look it if you have a Avalanche folder.
if yes go into it and tell me if there is a COTW and The hunter Folder
And If yes
go this Steps

Open the Folder COTW open it until there comes save then a Number and tell me if there are at the end of the folders ADF Data.

STEAM: Try unmark all dlcs and RUN your game.. in Library> Rigth click on The Hunter Call of the wild> Properties> DLC
