I can't penetrate a lung on a ROE DEER from 15m away with 12ga Buckshot. How is it that Buckshot, designed to hunt deer, is completely worthless even well inside it's programmed range? Fix it for the love of God. I'll never understand why game developers never seem to understand that shotguns are actually effective firearms beyond knife distance. Buckshot should be able to penetrate and deal organ damage at least 40m away. The downside should be the threat of the pellet spread damaging a trophy, not the inability to actually kill an animal ethically in the first place.

It is a ballistic design problem of the game, it seems that the damage is divided between each pellet and when it hits a bone all the total damage is "consumed" and the other pellets stop piercing with Zero damage so it does not mark that organs impacted..
A mechanic change is needed in Shotgun Pellets :/
In fact, if you see the trajectory of the pellets you will see that they did hit the lung, but when they arrived with zero damage then the system does not recognize that there was even an impact.
1 = Exist/Hit, 0 = Not exist/No Hit
An option I suppose would be to make the bones not receive damage, although that would make the bullet always pass through them :S
Just giving them more penetration would solve the issue. As it stands, Buckshot has 5 Penetration. It needs 25.
It has it, as I said above, the pellets penetrate even the organs but with zero damage points.
When they hit the bone all the available damage was consumed.
The problem is the damage, let's assume that the total damage available from the bullet is 20, each bone consumes 5 points, when it touches the skin it consumes 1 point. If you see the image, 3 pellets hit the bone, that subtracts 15 points, When the other pellets hit the skin they already consumed the remaining damage, so it doesn't matter how far they penetrate since they have no damage to distribute...
A mechanical change is needed to assign Individual Statistics to each pellet or increase the Available Damage so that the pellets arrive with enough points for the system to register the impact as valid
The pellets didn't actually reach the organ at all. They're embedded in the flesh and just didn't quite make it. The angle makes it difficult to tell but I made sure of that when I was examining the kill. I'm not disagreeing with your concept of the pellets sharing penetration and causing issues, but if that IS the case, just giving the round more penetration will solve that problem entirely. The further away you are, the wider the spread, and the more likely the pellets will be wasted on bone. The closer you are, the more tight the spread, and the more likely you won't get screwed. Increasing penetration will ensure there's a higher chance of successful organ damage even with the current system.
Yes, they arrived, but having zero damage, the system does not recognize the impact and does not mark the organ in red.
Remember this is a game with a line of codes where Zero = Does not exist
More penetration will solve the issue without needing to redesign the shotguns from the ground up.
Even Slugs lack penetration!
Or they could even add 00 Buckshot,With a little more expansion and and bit more penetration.
I think all of the shotgun ammo types in the game need a serious buff
I also think when shooting small game they should show the full spread, not just the pellet that killed the animal.
Yep, that annoys me so much when I'm just trying to see how much the shot spread and it won't show you. That seems like important information, right?
Exactly! How am I supposed to master the art of using the shotgun without that information.
Not to mention the lack of spread, which is especially noticeable with birdshot. The entire point of birdshot is to easily hit fast moving, often flying objects.
