#Lion Remodel + TruManes
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Firstly, let's address the official lion's model and discuss what changes could be made.
It's still a solid lion model, however it is far from perfect. Truthfully, it is missing some color. Real-world lions have some white on their muzzle and underbelly, and the white streak below the eyes is pretty much universal among the world's wild felines. The face shape itself can also be tweaked, and the hind legs a little bit more muscle.
Call of the Wild's lions seem to be mostly one color - a vibrant savannah orange. The only time you see any other color is on the nose and mane, or, if you're lucky, you'll see a white albino lion. This is fairly true of real world lions - but real world lions and their manes can come in many colors. An African lion can come in brown, blonde, beige... in some uncommon instances an almost grey coloration. Their mane coloration also varies, but is typically beige in the front, dark brown or even black on the back.
Younger lions also have rosettes, much like a leopard!
COTW's lions just seem to be lacking some life in their color, if you catch my drift.
Now onto TruManes... real world African lions have a wild variety of mane types. The shape and size varies on a lot of factors. Age, health, even location can play a factor. For example, the lions in Tsavo have shorter manes in comparison to the lions of the Serenghetti. And no matter what type of lion, older males will have larger, darker manes.
Lower difficulty lions may have a shorter mane than the big difficulty 7's, 8's and 9's. These lions may not be as healthy or elderly as the big males, making the addition of TruManes a little more realistic. Plus, seeing all of these variations of racks seen in the game's deer is super cool! Why not for lions? Me personally, I would love to go on a hunt for an albino lion with the short Tsavo mane.
With a few tweaks to the lion model and the addition of TruManes, the King of the Savannah can look that much more regal, a much more desireable trophy.
I would also like to include the addition of the ear markings present on the back of a lion's ears and again bringing up changing the facial structure. The faces on the lionesses in game, for example, don't look quite right... here's some real world lionesses for reference.
African lions (and by extension majority of big cats) often have black at the back of the ears. However interestingly some lion specimens don't have this! If the developers want to give their lions a little more color, though, I personally reccomend adding the black behind the ears.
What tweaks would you guys like to see? I'm curious!
More fur types and remodeling sounds nice with a g1
Lion hunting in general needs a rework, currently it’s very boring, starting with aggression they need to stalk you when below 50% health and near tall grass,if you combine those factors you’ll die.
Definitely down for this! Love all the ideas
Now THIS is a lion model done right.
This + TruManes can make COTW's lions the best lions in a video game. They already have a fantastic Fallow deer + the best black and brown bear models I've ever seen in a video game. I'm sure that if they revisit the lion they can do the savannah king justice!
Is this WOTH??? If so that’s one of their better models if I’m correct.
Yeah this is WOTH. IMO their black bear model is... yeah it can use some tweaks
And Cape buffalo from what I’ve seen😬
The capes are fine actually! I don't see much wrong with them but im not an expert on bovids.
But back onto lions.
While not exactly realistic I’d want to see a rare fur type based on the Asiatic Lion
We can talk about cape buffalo in #🦌︴general if ya want
I was going to include this in the suggestion but thought better of it.
Cotw lions have "albino" as rare fur, but there are no albino lions on planet earth. There are however leucistic lions, which are whit-ish with black noses, lips, etc. This should be fixed alongside the very lacking model.
I agree completely. (I actually knew all white lions are leucistic.)
However COTW's albino lions actually show albinism. If the model itself was based on a leucistic then I would have said something, but since they actually do look albino its fine.
CoTW has added some fictional stuff before, such as ghost jackals and melanistic mountain lions. Perhaps in COTW's world albino lions actually have been repeatedly recorded. Plus, it's not such a far-fetched coloration. So I have no problem with COTW having albino lions (even though real world white lions are actually leucistic.)
All male lion variants in-game currently
All lioness variants in-game currently
After looking at the color variants again I actually don't have much criticism with them. However I would still like to see more white on the muzzle, cheeks and underbelly

Tbqh, I feel almost all of the animals need some TLC from more specialized modelers
I'm usually in the Planet Zoo community and, while many animal models in the game's earlier life weren't anything to write home about, the new ones as well as those updated by modders show what amazing video game animals can look like
So I think there can be a lot of good had from reaching out to different people
Absolutely. There is no excuse for the mediocre to bad quality of the animals in cotw. It's not a question of engine or performance. It's a question of "who do I pay to make the model". It's a skill issue.
Yeah I can be stupidly picky with animal models as I do some of it myself. I'm not that good tho
Admittedly, I can be picky as well. Thats why I made this thread.
Bump
Bump! Lets show the world just how gorgeous lions can be!
They Got people that worked in FarCry Primal...let´s hope the modeller behind this one too
GOT DAMN!!
That is a really good model and if they replaced the albinos with a leucistic (thatd look like this) i would not at all be upset
Hopefully we can see a rework for these guys soon, love these animals!
These are taxidermy mounts from Life Form Taxidermy and Kanati Taxidermy studio. They could take some inspiration from these for the trophies in game.
Bump!
Here's all the suggestions I've made if you want to see more from me.

great contributions!
Im very keen for a tru-manes system
ZHA??????
Damn we got a lot of mutual servers
Holy moly 90
This model is a Cave Lion, but is still a good ref overall
Prehistoric Kingdom?
Correct
Really solid model. Not sure how I feel about the markings though. Maybe if they were a similar color to the snout and underbelly I'd like it.
Ginger rosettes is just weird to me. I do know erythristic leopards and ginger bengal cats exist but with those it looks more natural because they're ERYTHRISTIC.
yes I love this so much, I've always thought the lions seemed off, especially the manes because most lions in real life have dark brown, almost even black manes, while the only real darker variant in cotw is the dark brown fur variant which is extremely rare
Precisely!! And the lionesses are even worse!! They have such goofy faces
Almost at 100!
106 now
Yall wanna see a lion done right?https://youtube.com/shorts/YjZidIDuKWk?si=HLXX70iE-70LfUov
Oh hell yea
Yes they doo
I was excited for africa, tell i saw the animals and no elephant, giraffe, hippo, hyena,
BUMP
They should travel in prides
This one is also peak: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/VJvwNP

Would love to see some rosetted ladies as a rare fur color!
After seeing Tigers...Yeah, NOW there is no excuse. The models & behaviour should be updated

https://www.reddit.com/r/theHunter/s/2DfGwPmdzS found a Reddit post on this subject!
Decided to try and give the lions some love by editing them to have the white markings real world lions have!
Wow, just a little edit makes them look so much better! Hope they get some love soon
Im gonna take this a step higher
I made them darker here for better visbility, but did you know that lions often have faint rosettes!?! Would be so cool if they were included!
These markings are especially visible when the lion is a cub, however fade with age. Every once in awhile though, you may get an adult lion, around 2-5 years of age, with very faint rosettes on the legs and underbelly!
(They tend to dissapear entirely within the 4-5+ age mark)
Ok enough infodumping I am totally normal about this subject
I can’t quite remember if this is the case ingame but… Older lions (High Golds/Diamonds) should have very visible tufts of fur that grows inbetween the crease of the front legs.
Oh yes I 100% agree, this was somewhat brought up HERE #1159996914448732231 message with how many mane varieties there are!
So after seeing this thread a while back and sitting on it, I decided to take a comparison dive and attempted to edit(via Procreate) a lion via images(cotw & rl) Briar provided. This is the result of that.
Thank you for modifying the face as well!! Love it!! Infinitely better than what I cooked up hahaha
Looks great!
yes
Def would LOVE for the lions to get a lot of love, and possibly even having females able to score diamond, or even something like a mini-GO?
For example a lioness with a mane https://www.newscientist.com/article/2106866-five-wild-lionesses-grow-a-mane-and-start-acting-like-males/
bump! lions NEED some love and affection. they have such potential and would bring life back to the map.
Hmmm this would be interesting, maybe a female only rare? Love my extra testosterone having lionesses
Also it would be possible just look at the fox and their multiple fur lengths
Yeah that works too, I just think if the female is roided on T would be nice to be a diamond
Real though
I actually planned on making a maned lioness as one of my concept art great one variants x)
Them and tsavo lions are soo cool... my beloveds... short maned lions you will always be my favorite
Heck my lion characters all have shorter manes x) I just think they look cool!
I do love the big dramatic manes, but a wider variety of manes among the lions would be amazing,
Big manes are awesome too. No shame for folks liking em. But my god. If they ever made short manes. You bet your donkey im grinding for a short maned albino
I’d take a baby maned albino over a big one any day
I hope if they get a a remaster they get a regular white variant too
Also if you have a moment https://discord.com/channels/393040947006406657/1251744730786828419 voting would be helpful : )
THAT WOULD BE GREAT
tigers have complex AI, especially when compared to other COTW big cats. I would love to see lions show pride behaviors (and have prides in general). and even have home ranges similar to tigers. possibly even adding a new type of idle for males where they patrol the edges of their range while lionesses lounge/rest.
this might just sound better on paper than in game. but its an interesting thought.
interaction animations between animals as a whole is something id like to see. like two lionesses stopping to smell each others noses or two does grooming one another.
the lion models in the ultimate hunting trailer have absolutely obliterated the cotw models, which is a good thing as it gives even more reason for cotw to do a rework on them
my thoughts exactly.
they are literally pinpoint accurate, amazing work done by them

🦁
These are some incredible insights
Going back on this. If im correct this woudnt be so far-fetched as an uncommon coat. Think grey lions do exist in Africa
Some examples of this
New rare color abnormality: Erythrism.
This is an excess of reddish pigmentation. It has been documented twice before in lions, in a lioness and in a male lion named Ginger respectively.
After a tiger I don't hunt lions. Because it boring and non dangerous. All urgently need rework.
Bumping this! Feel free to check out a new suggestion I made: Great One Wolf! #1379216821747581080
Lions could have so much peak diversity if they got remodeled, a short maned albino would look absolutely amazing
manes being scaled with level is an incredible idea, I'd never even thought of that.
. Message to boost back to the top!
Since the lowest level for male lions ingame right now is... I think 5 or 6... the smallest possible mane can be something like V on the left image, and II on the right image.
peak and the most likely way to do it
It would make them so unique. The only non-antlered/no-horn species to have a TruRacks system
LIOB!!
Bump to the top!
PS: If they added a Spotted rare, it could be called Marozi!
Marozi/Spotted lioness, having retained its pattern into adulthood. They'll fade out later, though.
