#Add .410 and .22LR combination gun to base game

CotW has changed a lot since release, and small game--mostly absent at the start--now make up a significant portion of the species. But as it stands there are no rifle or handgun options for Class 1 animals without buying DLC, leaving new players to unlock either birdshot or small game arrows.

I think adding a combination gun chambered in .22LR and .410 shells would be a great way to bring those cartridges into the base game while not making any of the DLC guns which use them obsolete. Players would be able to hunt small game from the start, but the break-action means they wouldn't be able to spray-and-pray at whole flocks.

Pictured are the Savage Model 42 on top and the Chiappa Double Badger below. While in real life I'd gravitate toward a gun with wooden furniture I think in the game I'd prefer something based on the Savage. It's marketed as a youth gun and that would jive with its status as a starter weapon in the game. (edit: Another plus for the Savage is that instead of dual triggers you flip the hammer to choose a barrel, meaning there would be a visual indicator of the swap for the player.)

And lastly, one of these should be added just because combination guns are cool, and the Grelck could use a buddy (though, uh, just make sure all the issues are fixed with that one before adding another).

This would be a pretty cool thing to include

When I first saw the title for this, I thought "why??" but honestly after reading the description, and the justification for it to be added as a base game weapon for all players, I think it is a great idea and fills a need. I like it!

I agree. The main purpose I see it serving is as a starter gun for new players, but it could definitely also be a fun change of pace in small game hunting for experienced players. One close shot with the .410 and the opportunity for one longer-range follow up with the .22 would be a shift from the current Class 1 weapons. And if it were based on a small, light gun like the Savage 42 then you could potentially squeeze it into an existing loadout just to have and fool around with.

And while my suggestion is only for bringing existing DLC ammunition into the base game, it's certainly crossed my mind that adding .410 slugs could make this a nifty Class 1-3 weapon. That would put it in a whole different niche, though, and they'd probably be less willing to give that away for free. Maybe one of these days we need a DLC that includes alternative ammo for existing weapons that makes a big difference in how they can be used.

Hello DoofusMagnus,

Thank you for your suggestion to add a .410 and .22LR combination gun to the game.

Your idea of introducing a combination gun like the Savage Model 42 or the Chiappa Double Badger is interesting, and it's great to see the thought you've put into how it could fit into the game.

We appreciate your input and creativity and will certainly consider these kinds of ideas as we explore potential future updates and additions to the game.

.22 shot-shell and a .410 slug would be possible/cool too. 🫠

Bump because there was some related discussion on the subreddit.

I made a very similar post some time ago. Basically saying that adding a class 1 hunting option with more range than a shotgun to the base game would be very beneficial to new players. Some other ideas could be pump, lever, or break action .22lr/.22h.

Bumping due to a similar idea coming up on the subreddit again.

Great idea for the base game players. Definitely lacking a viable option without DLC.

lets bring this back up, it just makes a lot of sense

Bump, the wood furniture looks very nice too!

Oh hell yeah this is a great. I know I never bothered doing any birds or small game until I bought DLC. Shotgun experience grinding is such a pain. Single shot .22 would be a perfect add to the base game, and the combo gun flavor is an excellent incentive to use it.

I ordered the wood stocked one. It's a chiappa Double Badger
I got the .22lr version

I've been casually hunting for a Savage Model 24. Same thing, just 40+ years old lol.

I agree, the base players need more content, after all it is from this that they create the desire to buy dlc in the future, it would be a good way to make new players interested in hunting birds at the beginning of the game

Release it as free content alongside the Community Weapon Pack? As an extra thank you to the community? Maybe? That'd be cool, right? 😉

# ivory plank I agree. The main purpose I see it serving is as a starter gun for new players, ...

Having used 410 for hunting irl, slugs should relatively easily be able to take class 5 game. I used to use 410 slugs for black bear before i could get my own rifles because it was just what we had. 410 buckshot works great for coyotes. Surprisingly accurate despite only having 3-5 pellets. But they are single stacked in the shell and give really good patterns, at least from my 410s. I do believe the max range of the birdshot is roughly 35 yards though. With the new turkey tss rounds maybe further but for standard game loads 35 seems to be a sweet spot with 3 inch shells. For the buckshot in the game maybe classes 2-4? Seems reasonable as its common here for white tails.

Still an awesome suggestion, BUMP! 🤠

So, they only need to add the actual weapon itself and 2 ammo types (buckshot and slugs) to make this a good weapon.

Drilling has a toggle for rifle/shotgun select, 22 has two ammo types already, and the magnifico. 45/410 added 410 bird shot. The mechanics are in game and literally need no changes.

Buckshot 2-4 and slugs 3-5 would be my suggestion

They should have made one in 7,62x54R and a baikal single shot shotgun or a baikal double rifle

I don't think the new gun is a double barrel, but maybe we can hope it has multiple barrels we can swap out?

Only like the base game rifle.

Welp, I'd say the fact that they're adding a single-barreled break-action .410 as a paid gun puts the nail in the coffin of this idea. At the very least as a free addition, but almost certainly as a paid one too. I guess consider it as a starter weapon for CotW2, EW?
