The grey wolves should have a small remodel done. maybe some new animations/behaviors, too. The wolves in the game are usually just grey unless you get a rare. I feel like there should be more variations to it and more common fur types other than just grey. There could be different mixed shades of grey and brown, and black that are common. Their behaviors could use a small change too, like making them a little less aggressive than they are already. Since, wolves rarely attack humans. Or add some new animations like, when they are resting, or eating. two could be playing or something like that. I'd love to see them get a small update to look better.
#grey wolf remodel? (with pictures/concepts) 🐺

Btw u literally made all EW’s work 😂
100% agree with this
I think also the fur types need a remodel

I have made several posts in #1114692251096989726 discussing the fur types. I will make it a major point to check out this thread for tweaks to the actual model itself. Leaf did amazing on the concept art and I don't want that to go unnoticed!
once the new pictures upload that is. it'll be awhile since this laptop is not good at all

Wait if you had black wolves would that mean you'd have to get rid of the melanistic fur type?
No. Black Wolves Irl Are Only Partially Melanistic. They Often Have Little Flecks Of White Or Grey In Their Fur.

Nope. Black wolves are relatively common and the black colour gene is known as the Kk locus (and funnily enough, was introduced as dogs bred with wolves a very long time ago). Black wolves are also known to have better resistance to sicknesses.
This only applies to Yellowstone wolves. Not Eurasian greys. There are seperate melanistic genes between the two iirc.
(Fellow WolfQuest player?)
(Yes!) Very true, they could keep the melanistic as the rare and scrap the black wolf potential variant to keep consistency in Medved (or alternatively, make a two-tone black wolf with more white to it)
In #1114692251096989726 I suggested TWO melanistic variants, like how some animals have two or even three variants of a coloration. One being black, the other being a chocolate brown.
Plus, the black wolves with some white are still melanistic, even if it isn't totally jet black like we're used to with other animals. Truthfully, many melanistic animals still have some color, such as black jaguars and leopards (rosettes still visible and can sometimes have a rusted look) as well as fallow deer (can be a dark chocolate color.)
Just like leucism, melanism can be varied and present itself in many ways. Just way less variations than leucism, but still having variations.
A truly "partially" melanistic (aka pseudomelanistic, which has been recorded in cheetahs, leopards, tigers, zebras and foxes. King cheetahs and cross foxes are the most famous examples of pseudomelanism.) would probably look somewhat like a cross fox is my guess. I suppose Big Blaze can serve as an example!
A two-tone wolf variation could still make for a neat uncommon though!
Tldr black wolves with white spots are still melanistic because melanism can present in many ways sometimes, especially for wolves

Glad I checked this, I hope to see updated wolves in the near future!❤️

More fluff
The Biggest Issue I Can See Is Their Faces, And Their Tails (As Well As Just The Furs And Fur Textures). They Just Seem Off.
I don't personally like the face of the edited wolf it's nose looks to long and it fur around the head and neck looks strange

I like the idea of a touch up for the wolves but I really don't want the aggressive nature toned down. That is what makes them fun in game. Aside from fur variety I would also love to see more sub-species like Timbers or Reds.
Timber and reds are grey wolves.
“Timber Wolves”, Correctly Called The Eastern Wolf, Is Not The Same As The Gray Wolf. The Gray Wolf Is Canis lupus. The Eastern Wolf Is Canis lycaon.
The Red Wolf Is Also Not The Gray Wolf. The Red Wolf Is Canis rufus, And Is A Far Older Lineage That Has Lived In North America For Far Longer Than Gray Wolves Have.
Even If That Is True, The Red Wolf Is Still (And Has Been For Decades) Considered A Separate Species Than The Gray Wolf.
100th like, how I never seen this post?
I thought it was Canis lupus lycaon, not a whole nother Canis species altogether?
Though the Red wolf is considered seperate, I was always under the impression that the Eastern wolf was just a subspecies of Grey wolf, like Canis lupus irremotus or Canis lupus occidentalis are.
From What I’ve Seen And Heard, They’re Thinking Of Them In Their Own Species, Since Some Recent Genetic Studies Have Shown That The Eastern Wolf Is A Hybrid Between The Gray Wolf And Red Wolf,
Clearly what I meant and what I said got mixed up...I used the wrong term. Anyway, the Eastern is a hybrid of a Coy Wolf and Grey Wolf. They are common here in parts of NY.
Anyway, to be fair what I meant is obvious and did not really need a big discussion lol. Basically what it boils down to is that animals that are the same but in different regions develop and adapt to the environment...this in turn evolves them to live better in said environments. That would include fur color/patterns, size and behaviors.
Its no different than the situation with mountain lions being called pumas, catamount, cougars or panthers.
But yeah, at the end of the day I meant just add them to other maps with the regional name given or add the fur variations to them on current maps for variety. Pretty simple lol.
I already made a suggestion on this
They need new AI as well. I kill whole packs and they don't even flee. Just stand around and let me kill them.

bump for better wolves
bumping this back up again
@ionic shell found something you might like
I was already in it
Why am I not shocked 😂
But great concept anyway gray wolves hopefully get a nice remodel with the new furs coming
giving this one another bump
if you look at the steam page of the dlc you can see the gray wolf in full detail. It has gotten a rework!!
they look so good! my only gripe is maybe they couldve given a bigger cheek ruff? though beggars cant be choosers, its a MASSIVE upgrade
hopefully in the full update report the iberian wolves also get their model upgraded 🤞
I think this is a new species of wolf because in the trailer the wolf we see looks different
Possibly! Although i have a feeling it would have been one of the first things mentioned on the website yet only states grey wolf. Hopefully more information comes out soon
I think that's just showing that they're going to have more common fur variations now
Why is Whitetail Deer a new animal on this map? Remodeled Whitetail???🤔
There are alot of whitetail in the area
It is true. Saskatchewan and Alberta have the most abundant whitetails in Canada.
I hope their mountain lions on this new reserve and I hope to God if they are, they got a new model and a rework
Look at their face this is not the grey wolf we have in the game, there is 2 options this is a new wolf or the grey wolf remodel
oh it's 100% a remodel, what I meant is that the remodeled wolves probably have several different fur variations now
The subspecies of Gray Wolf in COTW:
-
Alberta
(Canis lupus occidentalis)
Northwestern Wolf -
Yukon Valley
(Canis lupus pambasileus)
Alaskan Interior Wolf -
Medved-Taiga
(Canis lupus albus)
Tundra Wolf
I'm pretty sure that the Alaskan Interior Wolf is essentially the same as the Northwestern Wolf. There's not many morphological differences as far as I can tell.
It’s the same subspecies with the classification of about 30 years ago
