On today's stream, Jaxy mentioned on the topic of an ammo rework that they have to consider whether it would be a priority enough to not work on a new species. I hope the team would do a complete ammo rework. I think it is worth putting new species on pause for a minute. Plenty of things need expansion & penetration buffs, from .223 (yea it's still lackluster), 6.5mm, buckshot (that barely penetrates!), etc. I have had .45-70 struggle to take down some lower level game. I think having a variety of guns that are 'overpowered' is preferable if it is closer to real life, because then it is preference to the person on what round or gun they like using. At the moment, some like hunting with calibers that don't do well, so either they struggle with it or they use a meta gun like the AR-10. I think buffing all calibers to a real life performance actually will benefit the game's balance and variety in choice.
I know people really like the influx of new species and places but I really like the execution of New England Mountains and reworking a lot of feedback into gameplay with that update, fixing or improving core issues. I think a complete ammo overhaul, while intensive, would actually make the weapons inventory pop a lot more, as it stands half of the guns and calibers are obsolete. Making all or virtually all calibers relevant respective to their real life counterparts will bring extra purpose to everyone's caliber selection.
