,I had something similar happen. I shot an Axis deer, stag and that spooked the herd, of course. They all (including the one I shot) ran up the hill they were on, about 100m, where the stag died. But, they were stopped from fleeing by high cliffs, and the herd (mostly level 1 females), with one level 2 stag)was stuck in a blind canyon, and as I approached to claim the trophy, they just stood there. There was also a lone fox trapped with them. It was as though the herd was now facing danger (me) that blocked the escape route out of the canyon.
They didn't know what to do, as Defensive and Aggressive are not Axis deer behaviors. I'm sure that had I shot a member of an aggressive species, they would not have hesitated to just trample me as they ran out of the canyon. If there had been a high-level lead male present, he'd have been smart enough to not get into the canyon in the first place or would have taken the only way out regardless of my presence. It's not unusual for spooked animals out in the open to run in your direction and bump you.
I've also seen animals getting stuck within a group of boulders, rather than going around the entire group.
What you are describing, though, seems to be a more significant issue with the fleeing and path-finding algorithms. I suggest trying this - set up a tent nearby, and rest to advance the time to the next day. If the animals are still there, exit the game, re-enter and continue - you'll respawn at that tent, and you can check again.

Just to be safe I would verify you steam files (assuming your still playing on steam sir) as this shouldn't be a thing in SP.

  • Make sure you have enough space on your HD
  • Make sure your drivers are up to date
  • And this one always seems silly to me but make sure you don't have any windows updates pending. I often have goofy things happen on games when I haven't updated.
