I've suggested this during a live stream but with no response, the quail are not realistic right now, quail are birds who flush out and scared you in real life because they take off from right under your foot/dog, while ingame i see even the developers on stream shooting them with .22 100 meter out, please it could be the funniest thing to hunt in the game if they just randomly flush from under your foot or your dog. I have once stepped on a quail while hunting, without even realizing it because they don't fly out until they see they've been found. It is supposed to be hunt with birdshot 10-50 meter, not 100 meter .22 !

I agree with you, although the Difficulty system of the animals determines the range of the senses, I think that the Quails and Pheasants should have some "Sight and Hearing" removed so that they emulate a more realistic behavior, currently they detect us at a distance of 100m, which does not give chances to shoot them with shotguns
I usually chase them to the end of their home range to try and get them to fly back towards me 😂
it would legit be the funniest thing to hunt in the game if it worked like it does irl 😄
Agreed!
Also we need to really hear quail and other upland birds when they flush ... Especially quail As the OP states they stay grounded until you are almost on top of them. It would be ultra realistic to be running or walking along only to have a covey of 5 - 10 quail flush up all around you... If you never experienced that it will startle the crap out of you ... Please implement this as it would be so immersive ....
Bump for Bob Whites
Did u kill the quail u stepped on?
I still don't understand why the first system that the Pheasants had when Rancho del Arroyo came out was removed, the one where they ran briefly and stayed under a bush until one kicked them, it was great...
Why don't we go back to that one?
Most Of Them Actually Don’t Let You Get That Close. Almost Any Quail Or Quail-Like Animal I’ve Ever Tried Hunting Waits Until I’m Around 10 Meters Away, Then Flushes. Chukar, Pheasant, Gray Partridge, California Quail.
In my experience the temperature seems to have something to do with how close they will let you get before flushing... The colder it is the more they seem to hold in cover. As it gets warmer they will flush a little further out. But never more than shotgun range which is 40 to 50M. I have also seen quail run instead of flushing ..... A good dog will let you know when they are running .... increased hunting pressure and predation will also affect their tendency to flush quicker
Yeah but did that quail died?
Probably Since It Was Shot

I need this in my life
Is the old system back?
Sometimes they still do it. But idk, I haven’t played cotw since the new dog release
Is back :v
https://youtu.be/KGzlHxgzTuM
Now let's wait for the Quails to also use the system :/
would like some verification from the devs if they have adjusted bird behavior or not ....
I have very low problems with the quail now if you don't run thru the field but go normally (like irl) they flush very late sometimes even am I in the middle of a flock.
Bump
There was no mention of changes to the quail system?
It seems like the change was made only with Pheasants .... They need to change on the quail AI to hold longer as well .... Also quail are more of a communal bird than other game birds and when they flush you will have several birds flushing at the same time givening that characteristic flushing sound you get when they all take off at the same time
Imagine quail hunting with 2 or three friends with dogs ... the first dog to point becomes the lead and all the other dogs will back or point to the lead dog .... Good bird dogs are trained to do this so that the birds are not flush prematurely
Once the covey is flushed then each hunters own dog will retrieve any birds that its owner shot. In this way there could be a competition among the hunters .... Great Fun !!!!
@limpid quarry Needs to be a thing .... suggest title change to Quail AI Rework .....
lol 🤭 i havent played cotw pretty much since i made this post
Im going to try and resurrect this zombie then ..... was hoping the pointer would make things better but they are still messed up ...
In my experience they are doing fantastic. I have very few notes except they still flush from a little far.
But definitely better pre pointers.
Why is everyone calling the animals behaviour programming AI, that's not what AI is.
Idk, for me (at least on Mississippi) they don’t flush until I’ve practically walked over them.
Same
AI Is Artificial Intelligence .... It's exactly what it is .... Artificially simulating the animals intelligence/behavior ... It doesnt just apply to human behavior/intelligence ...
Because it’s been called that since the 50’s.
I've messed around with quail and pheasants irl and something they'd always do is hunker and when you got too close they flushed out not from 100+ meters as they do now in game I hope they get changed in some way because it's kinda annoying that they are already gone before you even get to them
not really done much pheasant hunting IRL but lots of quail hunting both with an without dogs ..... temperature and pressure are the things that affect their ability to stay grounded .....
the warmer the weather and the amount they have been hunted will sometimes cause them to flush quicker they .... But for the simplicity of this game they should remain stationary or move very little until flushed by the pointer ...
Not everyone has a pointer tho?
