I am sorry I do understand people have talked about the .338 needing to be buffed before but it seriously needs to be buffed with penetration, at 150 meters it can barely even get into the flesh of a cape buffalo, the .454 revolver needs to be reworked as well it had so much trouble taking down a bison, even hitting where the lungs are unless your right up close and personal, I also think the .45/70 needs a bit of a buff as well, its known as a tour guides gun that they use to protect who they are giving a tour to from bears, moose, and usually a type of bison or buffalo, but unless your right up close and person its hard to take down a buffalo, moose, or bear with the .45/70 and .338, the .454 revolver is okay for moose and bears if needed though. I truly do love this game so much, it's my favorite game, but the .45/70 and .338 really need better penetration. Thank you to all the Devs, Mods, and team of COTW who reads this, please buff those 2 rifles at least, thank you

I definitely agree with the fact that the 45-70 needs a buff to damage

Oh no its terrible at penetrating moose and cape buffalo, even 300 now sucks and can't get double lung on moose after the hotfix when it use to get double lung up to 250m

The .300 was definitely silent nerfed with the latest update. Though I think the .338’s issues lie less with the gun and more with the animals. Cape buffalo still have the pen bug last I remember

Penetration bug. Rounds aren’t penetrating on Cape buffalo as far as they should be

The new .338 is friggin fantastic for bears. For pretty much every class 8 besides moose it also works perfectly fine. It’s literally just moose and Cape buffalo it struggles on for whatever reason

I don't understand why it has so much issues with the cape buffalo and moose though

I think it’s the animals themselves. Every gun that covers them struggles with them, from the .300 to the 7mm to the drilling rifle round. Only viable way to get vitals each time is bows, crossbow or the .470 within 150m

ooooh okie, i'm gonna have to try the .470 nitro some time then

All the rifles need a decent 20-25% buff, a nerf to animals would help too

yea true, those rifles definitely need buff's i haven't tried the .308 bolt action yet but i hear its better then the AR-10, and i haven't tried the 30-30 yet but those rifles need buffs they have so much better penetration in real life

i hope they add a scope for it in the future so it can be used at a decent range

I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion to buff the penetration of the .338 and .45/70 rifles, as well as reworking the .454 revolver. These weapons should 100% be more effective in taking down larger game, especially at the distances mentioned.
However, I would like to suggest that the developers conduct a comprehensive review of all ammo types and calibers. In particular, the .470 rifle and the .223 caliber, which is borderline useless, deserve some attention.

45-70 needs a range and damage buff

.30-30 and .45-70 need a heavy buff and range increased to around 250, Speaking from personal experience the .30-30 is a great rifle for black bear, i've bagged deer past 200 yds. it may not be MOA accurate, but it's still vital hits and the bullet is usually just under the skin of the far side

The problem is not the .338, the problem is the Cape Buffalo and Mooses, the bullets hardly penetrate them and they have too much life so they take a long time to fall, the Gemsbok are also class 8 and yet in them the bullet pierces perfectly.
As for the 30-30 and 45-70 if they need a Damage buff, the penetration works well but the damage is minuscule and the animals take a long time to fall, they are only effective when expansion bullets are used to compensate for this deficiency

the Cape buffalo is fine, they're notoriously hard to bring down and no decent PH would allow their client to use a .300 or .338 on them. Moose are way too tough in the game tho, they need a rework to be brought down easier the same as the base game rifles all need a hefty buff to make them somewhat comparable to the dlc guns. I'm betting new players feel like they have to buy dlc to have decent equipment and i'm sure it's turning quite a few off

im New, played 4 weeks now. i love the game and the guns overall feels ok, but last night i got my first Diamond and it was a PLains Bison on Yukon, shot it in the heart from 40 meters and it dropped within 4 meters and 5 seconds, didnt get quick kill! also perfect shot in the lungs from 150 meters bearly penetrate half a lung on these and moose. so i really agree on most in this thread. what i have experienced so far is with most guns if they class 4-8 for example they are only good for class 4-6 and maybe 7, it will kill 7 and 8 but you will have to track forever to find them. also i think it was the new 7mm when using scopes it hit (teste on firing range when i felt it was of) it hit between 1 and 2 notch down and 2 to the right. i couldnt understand how i hit shoulders when aiming for lungs 150+ out, lol. but now i know, so if i use the 7mm i aim slightly up and left

45-70 could use a different more powerful ammo type (+P buffalo bore stuff) instead of a complete buff since less powerful ammo for stuff like deer is commonly used. Not sure I’d put at class 9 though not too many places in africa would allow it due to its lower power levels compared to a 9.3 or 375, the minimum calibers. 338 and 300 need buffed a bit but should not be class 9 rifles because they are illegal and the people that do get to use them on dangerous African game irl are just irresponsible and shouldn’t even hunt. Right now the 470 still hits like a truck as it should and is just a great gun to use for cape buff, plus it’s fun.

I think class 9 is acceptable for the 45-70, after all it is one of the calibres used to hunt animals like bison, which is class 9.
