Agree that they would be useful, wouldn't say more useful than spotting though.
Besides, with sound it is much harder to get a decent approximation, and the size of the audio clues already gives you a rough idea
I say more useful since having eyes on the animal when spotting makes it more straightforward to estimate range on your own than relying on volume or the size of audio visualization. And if you spotted through equipment with a rangefinder then the estimate is already redundant. Whereas there's no equipment you can buy to get an exact range off of an audio clue.

I would be okay with this but only in the context of a skill / perk rework and adding additional levels above 60. They can add a skill that allows you to approximate the distance of sound cues with each level making your ability more precise ...
