Bringing in the C key or digicross down to switch animal hints on and off is very nice addition to the gameplay - lets add a subtle visual indicator to that which shows you if its on or off.
So because you are looking for tracks, you are kind of focused, right? How about a subtle vignette, a blur is to much I guess, that gives you that feedback if you are in "scouting mode" or not.
Vignette there = looking for tracks
Vignette not there = dont looking for tracks
