Hunting alligators can be difficult and frustrating, with a legit. risk that trophy animals die and despawn outreach. The following proposed changes are not so much as to make it “easier” to hunt alligators but to make it more balanced.

There are several problems. Currently there is no way to attract alligators to the player. Players must use stands to see them, or hopefully spot them before they run into the water and disappear. Most shots need to be taken at long distances, which leads to them dying underwater and despawning. This is not balanced from a game perspective and leads to players being unwilling to purposefully hunt them. As they are the chief target species of Mississippi Acres, players then do not play on the map.

Solutions:

Firstly, any alligator that dies underwater ***must *** float to the surface and give an opportunity for harvesting like any other animal in the game.

Secondly, alligators should be attracted to the player’s vicinity. Two suggestions:

  1. Alligator Caller. These exist IRL, and are similar to duck callers, but mimic hatchlings. Proposed attraction radius: 220m; cause submerged alligators to surface and swim slowly towards the call; once on land they may investigate but spook within 15m. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh51b871nzc and http://gator-calls.flywheelsites.com/

  2. Alligator Bait. Baiting is used IRL by gator hunters. In the game this could take the form of an expensive consumable (say 3 “baits” for 1500 credits and weight 0.5 units). They would be placed in a suitable location near the water and have a percentage chance of slowly attracting 1-3 alligators already within 275m, similar to a spray lure only without any debuff from the wind. Attraction lasts 1 in-game hour, and bait despawns after that or if any alligator comes within 2 meters (and ate it). It cannot be moved or recovered by the player once placed. Effects would NOT stack with more bait, but it could be affected by the gator caller.

Lastly, alligators need to be more aggressive. Currently they will attack if a player stands in their way when they head to the water, but little more. While I don’t suggest making them behave as raptors in theHunter: Primal, they should be a bit more likely to attack if they are in the player’s vicinity (such as if the player was also near alligator bait). I would love it if a player might be grabbed and then barrel-rolled by the alligator, but that is probably asking too much.

With a boat will be easier to harvest and find them

I think that fixing up the gators to make them less frustrating to hunt would definitely make Mississippi a more popular map
