If we can see info on how heavy an animal is through a scope, would it not be possible to also identify fur type too? I'm colourblind and from a distance have no idea what fur type I'm looking at sometimes, especially when talking about Leacistic for example. Seems a small QoL option that might be useful for some, and if its optional it wont upset purists

It would be better if it was a skill that you have to unlock to see an animals fur type when spotting it

There is not. There's a skill that identifies fur type from tracks tho
