Blacktail - Yukon. YES I KNOW IT'S NOT 100% ACCURATE, but they have to be on at least one more map if we're ever going to get a Great One for them, and Yukon is at least closer to realistic than SRP. Would occupy the eastern and northern ends of the map.

White-tailed ptarmigan (new animal, essentially a reskin of the two existing ptarmigans) - Layton, SRP. Would occupy the higher-elevation areas in the maps.

Gadwall - Layton. Same areas as mallards.

Gray fox - Rancho. Wherever the coyote density is low/nonexistent.

I don’t want unrealistic animals on maps where they don’t live.

distant silo

And I want to have a chance to have a blacktail Great One that won't include an 100% copy-pasted map of Layton.

Do you want that?

#

I agree I want more blacktail, they need a rework so they look better as well

#

I think a second Layton will happen anyway cause where else are you gonna find Roosevelt elk, I just hope it looks more like where I hunt, because Layton looks nothing like it

# oak relic Yes

Why is that an issue? Have you never heard of Sitka blacktail? I’d rather them be on a new whiterime ridge but adding them to Yukon can’t hurt either. Keep the current blacktail model (or even a new one) but rename them Sitka blacktail and it’s fine

tame quiver
#

Another idea for another map, they could add new small game to it like Badgers, skunks, western gray squirrel, and there is a few Grouse species just an idea

oak relic
distant silo

People would complain about them both being only on one map.

#

If we’re gonna get blacktail on Yukon it should be straight up Sitka deer. I’m all for getting blacktail in another map though

uneven igloo
#

Although I have come to believe that Sitka Deer/Blacktail Deer aren't the best choice for Yukon anyway. Yukon is based on the interior of Alaska, which doesn't have Sitka Blacktails. I'd prefer to see them add Dall Sheep to Yukon instead.

fallow wing
#

What’s to say they won’t be adding multiple species to raise the roster up to like 12-15 to compete with the newer maps?

neat glade
#

They can add blacktails to Yukon but rename them Sitka-blacktail like they did with pumas and mountain lions having the same model and all but the name being different

uneven igloo
fallow wing
#

My main ones would prolly be Roosevelt elk, Sitka and dall sheep

uneven igloo
#

Here's a whole list of animals that I think would be good additions to Yukon (I don't think all of them would be added, but I think all of these would fit in pretty well):

Willow Ptarmigan
Black Bear
Dall Sheep
Spruce Grouse
Snow Goose
Wolverine
Snowshoe Hare
Canada Lynx
Beaver

#

I left out the Sitka and Roosevelt Elk because they're pretty much exclusively found along the southern coastline of Alaska, and Yukon Valley is clearly not along the coastline.

fallow wing
#

Would be cool to have several bears on one map. And I know that both of them aren’t exactly where Yukon Valley is but I really wanna see Roosevelt on more than one map

distant silo
#

The thing is, unless we want a number of copy-paste maps, there's going to have to be some stretched boundaries.

#

...and as a moderator, I do not want to deal with the inevitable shitstorm that would come with that number of copy-paste maps.

uneven igloo
#

I understand where you're coming from, but personally I just don't think it's logical to include the ordinary Blacktails from Layton on Yukon Valley.

distant silo
#

Let's agree to disagree. I'm pretty sure "Layton except it's DLC" wouldn't go over well with the community, and would not sell well at all and end up being a waste of time and resources.

uneven igloo
#

That's fine, I just personally don't think we need Blacktails on another map. I'm fine with having Blacktails and Roosevelt Elk remain Layton-exclusives, it gives players more reasons to come back to a base game map

#

would I enjoy hunting those two species on a new map? Of course I would! But I don't think they need to be on another map badly enough to necessitate adding them to Yukon. That's my personal opinion.

# sour topaz I never thought about it that way actually, I was about to drum up a map idea fo...

I mean, to me it just makes a lot of sense. Those two species are pretty much only found in the Pacific Northwest (with just a few smaller populations outside of that region) and Layton Lake is COTW's depiction of the Pacific Northwest. Unless people want a map based in Northern California, any other new map with either of those species is going to be covering very similar ground to Layton. Yukon Valley is its own separate thing, and I think Blacktail and Roosevelt Elk just wouldn't fit in with the setting of Yukon Valley. So I think (for now at least) those two species should be allowed to remain Layton exclusives, since Layton has very few other species that are exclusive to it.

fallow wing
#

The thing is though, hunting the same map over and over again becomes repetitive. I think there should be variety when it comes to each species. Oh, you wanna hunt whitetail? Here’s a bunch of maps you can hunt them on. You wanna hunt moose? Here’s another set of maps you can hunt them on. Roosevelt elk or blacktail? Too bad here’s the only map they reside on. I was incredibly upset that people wouldn’t stop whining about blacktail not actually reaching into Colorado which meant they got removed off of SRP’s backfill

#

I'm just throw something out there does anybody realize how amazing a British Columbia mountainous rainforest would be which could be a basically cross breed of Yukon Mississippi and Layton with a totally new rainforest type area

#

We could easily have a new Pacific Northwest map without it even resembling Layton or Yukon

#

The Great Bear Rainforest is a temperate rain forest on the Pacific coast of British Columbia, Canada, comprising 6.4 million hectares. It is part of the larger Pacific temperate rainforest ecoregion, which is the largest coastal temperate rainforest in the world. The Great Bear Rainforest was officially recognized by the Government of British C...

#

It could even be roughly based off of this place

#

And we can actually have a really green and lush map were layton is basically dead

fallow wing
#

As much as I would love to see a Canada map set in BC cuz, y’know, I live there, if we’re gonna get maps in Canada I’d much rather have it be a map set within the Arctic circle or in Manitoba

white crater
#

Oh I agree fully on that but Canada is basically similar to United States with different geological regions and share massiveness of different opportunities you can make we could easily have four unique Canadian maps

#

It's basically as untapped as Africa

#

Arctic circle map
Manitoba forest and plains
Pacific Coast rainforest
Tundra Atlantic Coast is 4 maps that we could have that would be really nice

sour topaz
#

Lets See

  • I sort of covered the Canadian Arctic with a suggestion of my own, though mine is on the mainland
  • Pacific Coast: I would avoid the Great Bear Rainforest but that still leaves a lot of options open as to where in British Columbia the reserve is set and Vancouver Island is a pretty beautiful place with lots of elk, black-tail and a very dense cougar population Manitoba: We could get Manitoban Elk and Sandhill Crane along with massive flocks of Snow Geese
  • Atlantic Coast: Newfoundland, it has caribou, moose, black bear, grouse, ptarmigans, small game, waterfowl and 2 types of murres (thick-billed and common) which are also known as turrs and are related to puffins
#

I should also add that for a reserve set on Vancouver Island, depending on what part of the island the reserve is one you could also get feral goats, feral sheep and fallow deer

white crater
#

Yeah great bear I was using just for an example what they can do for the rainforest in the ranges between Southeastern Alaska and Washington State

#

And yeah it makes me happy your Arctic suggestion is the highest of voted thing in the list of all the suggestions

#

That's my dream map

Mountain Goats, Cougars, and Bighorn for backfill on Layton

It would also be nice to have another waterfowl species on Layton, since there's a lot of water on the map. Green Winged Teal, Goldeneye, Canada Goose, etc. would be good additions to the map because currently we only have Mallards on Layton

I'm sure we're all aware that Silver Ridge Peaks is the only older map that hasn't had any species backfilled onto it. I think this map could definitely use a few more species though, since there's a lot of species from other maps that could theoretically be added to SRP.

Silver Ridge Peaks is based in Colorado, a state that is home to a rich variety of species. This diversity is currently well-represented in terms of big game, but the map is really lacking in smaller animals.

Some good species to add to SRP would include:
Various Ducks (including Mallard,
Cinnamon Teal and Green Winged Teal)
Ring Necked Pheasant
White-Tailed Jackrabbit
Red Fox
Coyote
Bobcat

In the thread attached to this post, I
will give my reasoning for why I think these species would be good additions.
.
On the topic of ducks: SRP has a lot of lakes and ponds that would be great for duck hunting, and yet there's no waterfowl species on this map. However, Colorado is home to a wide variety of duck species, including a few that are already in the game. It seems like the Mallard is the most common one in the state, which isn't surprising, and Mallards are present in the state all year. Green Winged Teal are also common in the state and are also present all year. Cinnamon Teal are present in Colorado (and the rest of the western United States) during their breeding season. Cinnamon Teal are also only on one map currently, making them a good candidate for backfilling on SRP. All three of these species would make great additions to SRP and would help to add more life to the numerous lakes and ponds in this map.
.
While I'm on the topic of birds, Pheasants would be a great addition to this map as well. SRP doesn't currently have a flushing upland game bird, but it would certainly be fun to hunt Pheasants while traveling across the map looking for bigger game. There seems to be a sizable population of Pheasants in Colorado, and the eastern region of SRP has plenty of open landscape that would be ideal for hunting Pheasants. While Pheasants are now huntable on several other maps, they do seem to be a popular species, so I doubt that anyone would complain if they would be added to SRP
.
Finally, on to the two small canines, the Red Fox and Coyote. We don't currently have any species on SRP that are Class 2 range, or any small predators at all. Both of these species could be added to this map and would fill that niche. I think Coyotes would be the best pick here, since they're an iconic species of the American West and have a wide range throughout North America. The Red Fox would be a good addition too, because this species was recently reworked and now looks better than ever before, not to mention that they have a wide range that includes Colorado. I think that both of these species would make for a great addition to SRP.
.
Now, the Bobcat, while it also fits the small predator niche, would probably be less ideal than the Red Fox or Coyote. First, we already have Mountain lions on SRP, so we're certainly not lacking feline representation here. Second, both Bobcats and Mountain Lions spook other animals, and Mountain Lions already spook animals on SRP very often. Having two animals on the same map that can spook other species would probably be pretty annoying to players who want to hunt the animals that get spooked by those species. So while Bobcats would be a fitting addition to SRP, I don't think they're the best choice

I'd like to address the fact that there's obviously other existing species in the game that could be added to SRP, namely Moose and Whitetail Deer. The thing is, SRP is a map that is already very heavy on big game species like these, and I don't think that SRP needs to be more big game oriented than it already is. Not to mention that both of these species have a limited range in Colorado, which makes them less ideal than others.

There's also the possibility of Gray Wolves being added to SRP because Colorado has a small population of wolves that is likely to increase in the future because of reintroduction efforts. The issue is, wolves are technically protected in the state, meaning that hunting them in SRP would probably be unrealistic. Not to mention that SRP already has Mountain Lions that spook a lot of animals, and this issue would only be made worse by having wolf packs chasing animals around. It's the same issue that I mentioned above regarding Bobcats. Technically wolves could be added to SRP, but it wouldn't be good for gameplay.
.
This is also part of post above

The backfilling has been very popular, and people have been eager to offer lists of species they want to see added to existing maps. Obviously they couldn't all be on a map at once, it would be too crowded. Plus not every player will agree with every addition. But what if each map had a list of possible species and the player could choose which they want to populate their version of the map?

There would have to be limits to prevent abuse, such as the removal of species not increasing the number of animals in the other species (otherwise the grind meta would obviously devolve into having a map with only the species you're grinding). Maybe there should also be a minimum number of species the player has to choose so that the maps still feel like ecosystems (perhaps based on Class ranges, e.g. Must have X Class 1-2 species, Y Class 3-5 species, etc., different per map). And there would obviously have to be a warning that some missions will be impossible while a species is removed.

Some ways I might personally use it: I think wolves and capercaillies were good additions to Medved, but I also like that map to feel a bit desolate, so I might substract a species (like boars) to maintain that feeling. Or if other species were added to NEM I'd likely turn existing ones off in an effort to make it truer to my experiences in the region (e.g. if woodcock and ruffed grouse were added, I'd turn off pheasants and bobwhites; if Canada geese were added I'd turn off some ducks).

It could also be interesting for multiplayer. Servers running the same map wouldn't just differ by whether they allow dogs/ATVs, they'd each feel like a slightly different version of the same region. It has the potential to make people more likely to host and to join as they want to show off or experience different configurations of the maps.
I know it's a bit out there, but if backfilling is something you want to do more of this could be a way to keep as many people happy with the results as possible
