#Make buffalo respect the ATV

The ATV spooks all animals within render range, as is the design of it, but both the cape and the water buffalo have about a 50/50 chance of instead going aggro and then chasing you to the ends of the map.
Aside from this being an annoyance for people (like myself) who use the ATV specifically to avoid animals while getting a map unlocked or doing missions, this can also be used to kind of cheese hunting the animals by making them aggro and run at you for an easy (or easier) shot.

Hence my proposal: to still convey that they are Aggressive™️ animals, have their ATV-aggro response be tweaked to about 200-250 meters, and have anything further than that opt to flee instead.

Could you clarify for me. You mean that only buffalo’s within 200-250 from the ATV should have a chance of going aggro?
Also I don’t understand your last sentence “…opt to book it instead”. What do you mean?

Ah, much clearer, tks.

earnest badger
#

bumping this, for as of right now a majority of Sundarpatan is occupied by an animal that is hyper-aggressive.

little mortar
#

No no no no. This is how I draw them out. Seriously. LOL
And it works on the Yaks too. It's one of my most fun hunts. I recommend carrying a tripod. 😂

earnest badger
#

and that's an incredibly cheap method that feels dirty.

Still having run ins with the bovine menace eh

earnest badger
#

I want to be able to enjoy the maps without having to be anxious about a buffalo or yak coming up behind me for just daring to exist

#

really wanted to be happy with this map, but now I'm just depressed about it

little mortar
#

Vehicular murder by Yak. You can't take this away from me.

earnest badger
#

I don't see how that's "fun"

#

personally I'd find it the opposite. Annoying and frustrating.

#

especially if miles away from the nearest outpost or tent

little mortar
#

You only need the ATV to open up the map. When else do you need it.

earnest badger
#

Travelling quickly?

thick moth
#

gotta be honest i dont have a issue i was hearding a group of 7 with no issues

earnest badger
#

especially if you don't like using fast-travel, for a more realistic experience?

little mortar
#

Tents. ATV spook radius is 500m. Why bother? Besides 3000 kills a week is dirtier.

earnest badger
#

Let's agree to disagree then

thick moth
#

i do only drive on roads normally so was first experience being that close in a vehicle

little mortar
#

Totally disagree. It's great fun. I protest! LOL

again, that's for you.

#

I have the reaction time of a koala when faced with danger.

little mortar
earnest badger

and before either of you say "skill issue" this goes for IRL as well. I've had a few scary moments at my workplace, because retail is fun like that.

errant zephyr
#

I swear tigers are a tad more dangerous
Me and my friend were hunting earlier today and the only thing we heard was a growl before he was sent to his ancestors by a tiger

And he plays a fair bit of Call of Duty so I imagine his reaction time is usually good

little mortar
#

What do mean? Where do you work????

earnest badger
#

Retail is fun. People can get very, very, very nasty about not getting their refunds, or when their coupons get declined for whatever reason that we're not allowed to change anything about.

#

and to return this to on-topic: do tigers aggro on the ATV?

errant zephyr
little mortar
#

Oh. I've been there. Very interesting comparison. You're not wrong though.

#

Right, I'm taking the ATV into Yak territory. Wish me luck.

I'm with you on this, Lyra. I took the ATV from the first outpost to the first lookout on Sundarpatan (sidenote: immediate backtracking isn't great design for opening missions) and managed to aggro four buffalo.

It's always immersion-breaking to do the dodge dance, and the longer it goes and the more animals you add the more absurd it gets (one literally ran on top of another as they all tried to charge me). And it felt real out of place when I had to gun them all down after the warden had just been telling me about the Buddhist desire to not cause unnecessary harm to animals.

Buffalo should aggro less, they should be more likely to break aggro on their own, and they should be more likely to get scared off by gunshots. Their cartoonish levels of persistence aren't a challenge, they're just tedious. They'd feel more like a threat if they aggroed less often but had better aim and could one-hit-kill the player.

The warden told me about not causing unnecessary harm after I blasted a wooly hare with the .300 ar lmao🤣. But yeah I agree it is really annoying

"boring" is being restricted to small areas of a map because you don't want to deal with a million aggressive buffalo that never give up

I completely agree on this topic. It is very weird to drive by a group of buffalos and when you leave the ATV and go on foot for a few minutes and all of a sudden you hear foodssteps of aggressive animals. Buffalo and other animals can be agressive, but from an ATV? And what others said aswell: When you leave 250 meter from the buffalo it should calm down and just flee. This is just plain unrealistic i.m.o. And for the people who like the aggression: Let them still attack you when you get close, but when the distance becomes > 250meter they spook. It's your choice to face them or leave them.

Let me add to this: I think 50% chance of each animal to charge is a bit much. Make it 50% for the first animal, whenever the second animal gets the check to spook or become aggresive let the chances be less big. If you now would have a group of 10 animals, 5 would become aggresive, immersion braking for me. Let it be, first 50%, 2nd animal, 25%, 3th: 12.5% (based on how many animals are already attacking the player).

I wish they'd add horses then everyone would be happy. 🏇 🤠

can we keep this on topic please?

# alpine turtle Idk just feels out of place

Oh right. Fair enough. Personally, I feel like it would add a really interesting dimension to the game and would be quieter than an ATV. It wouldn't trigger those buffalos and yaks. 😂

Yall ever seen videos of elephants, rhinos, hippos, bison, heck even domesticated bulls attack cars? Hyper aggressive at first but once the threat is dealt will they break off the chase. In game I guess once you exit it's home range the chase would stop that would be best. I've had cape chase me across the entire map before. No real threat just funny to see

earnest badger
#

wouldn't really help with the problem. Parts of the map would still be as good as off-limits to those who don't want to deal with that behavior.

Of course animals can get aggressive towards vehicles, but when you drive past animals like buffalo 100+ meters away they won't start chasing you down from a distance.

I completely agree with this suggestion. The further away you are from "fight or flight" animal, the bigger the chance should be to spook them. If you surprise them or sneak up on them by accident the chance of aggression should be relatively high, but in my opinion it should still be smaller than what it is right now. Maybe 25% under 20 meters, 10 % at 40, 5 % at 60, and 0 for everything above 75 meters.

earnest badger
little mortar
earnest badger

and if you're on terrain that doesn't allow for blind/tripod placement?

little mortar
earnest badger
#

they sneak up on me pretty easily, actually

little mortar
#

Do you not hear their footsteps? Also, they often but not always grunt or moan before charging.

earnest badger
#

footsteps are the only warning. They're otherwise 100% silent

#

and as I've said earlier, I have a very bad reaction time

little mortar
# earnest badger and as I've said earlier, I have a very bad reaction time

Fair enough but that's not the game's fault. I have excruciatingly painful neuropathy in my hands, arms and face (all over actually) which burns and stings permanently like needles and knives, so it is impossible for me to hardcore grind. But that's my problem. I'm not entitled to demand that EW prevent and prohibit grinding because of my handicap.

earnest badger
#

...reworking buffalo AI to not aggro as frequently wouldn't prevent that though???

little mortar
earnest badger
#

and I'm not advocating for buffalo aggro to be removed entirely?

#

I just don't want to have them come charging at me from the edge of render distance just because I'm on the ATV

little mortar
earnest badger
#

that might not be possible in the game's coding

#

I really do not know where the world you got the idea of me wanting all aggression removed from. I never once said that.

little mortar
#

I do have a compromise for a permanent tweak though.
If they were to do, as you suggested, and tweak the trigger range of aggressive animals then I would like to see the spook range drastically reduced for all species to be in line with the aggressives. Sound fair?

stable flicker

#

After experience (and I do love aggressive animals) I have noticed they are a bit too aggressive, they’re aggro-ing and charging from FAR like really far away from your position

maybe with the furthest aggro range being 100m

Has anything been done with the feedback discussed within this thread? Just wondering, since I've practically abandoned the game because of issues like this, with this many votes, not being handled at all...

(btw, I'm putting this same question under multiple of the feedback threads I felt were this neglected, which led me to abandon the game since July)

I think Buffalo are fine, they don't need to touch them imo, cause it might completely break them if they do
