#Shhhh .... I'm hunting wabbits .... ( rabbits / Chase dogs)

Here's an idea that can make rabbit hunting more fun as well as more realistic ..... Just add beagles (rabbit chasers) to the game. Read on to see how beagles could work....

Find some rabbit tracks that are relatively fresh. Command your beagle to hunt . Beagle (or favorite rabbit chaser begins to follow tracks hunting for rabbits. When he jumps a rabbit the beagle will begin to chase. Position yourself and your friends in and around and within the area where the rabbit was jumped. The rabbit will run in a general circular pattern around the area where it was jumped for a set period of time. You and or friends must spot the rabbit and shoot it before the timer runs out …. This is very similar to how rabbit hunting with dogs works IRL.

Some additional details on the chase mechanic could work would be to not allow the hunter to get any closer than say 50m from the rabbit/target animal while the chase is going on. The hunter must stay with in the boundaries of the chase..... If the hunter violates this rule then the chase is ended and the target gets away ..... This keeps the chase challenging and sporting for the animal being chased .....

This same mechanic could also be used for more than just chasing rabbits .... see here #1333888367628386304 message

Imagine the excitement when you realize your dog is chasing a max weight or diamond potential animal? Would be lots of fun with a group or just individually and something to break up the monotony of stalk hunting or grinding ....

There are rabbits on literally every map and they are just targets of opportunity. This suggestion would give a purpose or a reason to hunt them.... Not only alone but with friends as well ...

Why do people duck hunt? Because it's different and breaks up the monotonous grind of hunting drink zones .... This idea would do the same for rabbit hunting .... It would be a different kind of hunting that would be fun and enjoyable ...

The way you've worded this implies rabbit hunting would become multiplayer-only.

Agreed, we need a dog breed that flushes/runs small game out of hiding

Flushing for birds on one branch of the skill tree and bailing for smaller game ie. Class 1 and 2 on the other and the little beagle would be perfect

Basenjis was used for flushing out game, they are a sight and scent hound, they are fast agile,

Another cool idea could be using a beagle AND a ferret. The ferret would go into the rabbit nest (or whateva) and either spook the rabbits out, or catch one and bring it out.

Even if they don't let you have more than one dog out at a time ... you should be able to hunt with more than one dog in multiplayer

In multiplayer, so far it seems like the Labs only perform functions involving their owner and their owner’s harvests.

I’ve never tried tracking a hunting partner’s harvest..

I wonder how that would work with Pointers, Sight Hounds, Coon Hounds etc. First come, first serve I guess. 🀷

I don't think we wont trackers and retrievers tracking and retrieving other players kills by default . Just too much potential for griefing. However they could add security features to MP that would allow dogs to find and retrieve the kills for other players if the other players approved it ....

In Spain, rabbits are hunted with Ibizan Hounds (left) and hares with Spanish Greyhounds (right). Bushy and enclosed terrains are best for Ibizan Hounds, and open terrains with cultivated and plowed lands are best for Spanish Greyhounds.

Sorry I have to give you a thumbs down on using greyhounds to hunt rabbits ....

These Dogs chase by sight only and it's more of a race/chase than a hunt. A live rabbit is released in an open field and one or 2 dogs are sent to try and catch it.

The race ends when they catch the rabbit or one or the other is exhausted and gives up.... If the rabbit is not caught the rabbit is not typically shot.

This is an old world form of Dog racing where bets and wagers are made to see who's dog will catch the rabbit .... As a result the grey hounds are often abused in their training or end up being killed when unable to catch the rabbit ....

I know there are some examples of using a pack of greyhounds to chase and catch coyotes but because greyhounds chase by sight it requires a large open fields and the end result is the faster greyhounds usually catch the Coyote .... This is similar to wild hog chasing with Dogs ....

If you have any other info on how Greyhounds are actually used for traditional hunting and not just racing/chasing I would like to hear about it .....

# fiery walrus Sorry I have to give you a thumbs down on using greyhounds to hunt rabbits .... ...

The dogs that chase a hare in the photo I posted are purebred Spanish Greyhounds, they are specialized dogs for chasing and hunting **hares **exclusively in open and plowed land, there are many of these in Spain. That's where its specialty comes from throughout the history of hunting in Spain. Its characteristics are: a thinner body and less robust bone structure compared to the English Greyhound (the common breed to chase and catch coyotes). Spanish Greyhounds have a narrower, more elongated head. Which are very different from the English Greyhound although they are greyhounds in a generic and confusing term. Historically, hare hunting is done with a Spanish greyhound on horseback while up to 3 greyhounds are released to hunt a hare. And this currently applies, it applies with or without competition. Rabbit, this is what the Ibizan Hound breed and other similar breeds are for chasing and catching without the need to shoot because they can do it. This is called hunting rabbits with teeth. Beagles are useful for tracking and pushing rabbits into view and chasing and catching greyhounds like the imagen below πŸ‘‡πŸ» . Beagles are trail dogs. The imagen it seems there are greyhounds and beagles because the people do not shoot, the beagle and greyhounds work in team. If you go with beagles only, you have to carry a gun.

In COTW there are many hare and rabbit species. It is OK. Also we need a pointer for pheasant and other upland birds.

I grew up with rabbit hunting beagles. It was so much fun. As far as mechanics go, I see this working similar to how a pointer currently works, up until he jumps the rabbit. Then, as you say, the rabbit would run in a general circle around that spot, stopping periodically and running again, changing speeds, etc, to stay just ahead of the dog. After a few passes, he would veer away in a straight line and the dog give up on it.

fiery walrus
#

Could also use the same mechanic for Fox hunts but maybe make the chase area bigger

But rabbit hunting and hare hunting would be different tho right? If not then this is cool but i’d think it’d have to be a treeing dog to be useful enough, since all the others dogs are that useful: pointer dogs can sniff out basically all animals (except big predators) retrievers can retrieve any small game and bloodhounds bloodtrack any shot animal. I’d like this idea tho but i’d want them be able to tree animals too

fiery walrus
# lost hound Yes, i’m ready to be proven wrong about the hare thing tho that’s just what i be...

Since most every map has rabbits / hares .... I think this would justify having this exclusive to beagles .....

However with that said this could also be just a new dog skill called Chase dog .... Could be primary or added as a secondary skill .... Then add beagles as a new dog breed DLC .....

This will allow you to train pretty much any dog breed to be a chase dog ....

Pretty much any class 2 or 3 animal could be chased in this way .... The original post was made some time ago when we only had one dog breed and I made it with beagles/rabbit dogs in mind ....
