tldr. An optional game mode. No base weapons. Only one ability per run chosen at the start of the run.

User Experience:

  1. Create your build
  2. Pick a map
  3. Toggle agony or not
  4. Toggle this game mode
You start picking any unlocked ability.

Benefits:

  • Allows the chosen ability to take advantage of class traits.
-- Currently this is doable with the Sage class to some degree. But it would be fun to have more flexibility with what main class + class mark you can apply to an ability.
-- Solo ability runs can be done to some extent right now by turning off auto attacking. But the class traits do not apply to your abilities(typically) and it would be fun to see what is possible if they did apply.
  • A variation in gameplay with its own challenges and benefits.

Ideas:

  1. Perhaps you're allowed to take all three ability upgrades instead of the normal two maximum.

apart from a select few class abilities, such as landsknecht, this is exactly the same as a single ability sage built. you can already choose any class mark to go with along with sage's abilities.

sure it will bring a bit more build diversity, but simultaneously devalue the one thing that makes sage be a class on its own in the first place.

To each's own. I think this adds significant gameplay differences. You will be able to build new builds with a different base class + any mark. And in my opinion that difference is very significant.
The Sage also lets you pick any ability at every banner. Thats pretty special all on its own. The sage is getting reworked from what I heard anyway.
To me this adds more opportunity for fun. I don't care, personally, if that devalues a class. When it comes to single-player gameplay I'd rather choose developing for more fun over game balance.

sure it adds a little more diversity, but not much more. and it'll completely take away exactly what makes sages unique as a class.

sage being able to pick abilities is more of a gimmick than a real benefit. you'll generally get plenty of opportunity to pick the abilities you want in a run already.

i get that there's fun to be had with your approach, i won't deny that. but there are definitely lots of other areas where development time can be spent much more efficiently
