#Anyone want to make a nomap/noportal modpack?

Hello. I am located in the US and was contemplating another Valheim playthrough. I have a lot of experience with servers, mods, configs, and modpacks. I will post what I would like to have in a modpack and if it is something that interests you and that you'd like to work on, you can let me know.

  • NoMap/NoPortal
  • Very little QoL mods -- inventory management and the grind are, imo, a pivotal aspect of Valheim
  • Mods to add in variety to weapons and armors
  • Slow down some aspects, like smelting
  • Increased difficulty -- nothing too crazy, but just add in some variety to the challenge of creatures you find
  • A more immersive world -- Riverheim and Expand world, maybe a 5x world size (I have not tested this combo yet)
  • Try to keep modlist as small as possible to at least try and have compatibility with future Valheim updates
  • And lastly, a customized vision of EpicLoot

I have maintained a few modpacks over the years but I am always doing it solo for a group and it is just too much work. Hoping to find one or two other people who may be interested in the same type of gameplay and have experience with modpacks or are willing to learn.

Thanks!

I've never tried expand world. does it make navigating with the yggdrasil root more difficult?

This sounds like fun but I'm on xbox so I couldn't be in a world with mods that aren't in the game files 😞

riverheim can be a pain in the ass based off of the run im in right now having almost no waterways and elder 2/3rds of the map out lol

but i have been interested in trying a nomap/portal run with that one raft mod. i just dont think itd work with riverheim unless the seeds alot better than the one experience ive had with it

I completed a modpack, finally. Testing balancing. I went ahead and did a 4.5x world using Riverheim. Its pretty cool, but unfortunately visible terrain can be quite "dimply" lol. Doesn't bother me, but really noticeable by edge of water and mountains.

Anyone have experience on completing a nomap/noportal playthrough? I think the map size is going to be quite the challenge.

When you get a world started, I'd be interested

We went ahead and stood up a Discord and a Valheim server hosted in Chicago today and have a test world going which may remain permanent. I think we will play pretty slow and just enjoy the slow grind. We would be open to picking up a few more players. If its not for you, no harm no foul. I plan to keep the server going and managing it for as long as people are playing.

If you're interested, shoot me a DM!

Hard to catch every mod when the list gets that long, but, I seen SSC but no anti cheat? Also, no fires/torches stay lit? Got some nice mods, and some horrendous mods, but usually the big ones for this type is SSC/Anti Cheat/No crafting from containers and if you're going with super OP magic, hope you're really increasing mob stars and going with "very hard" on the vanilla combat setting. Nice that you don't have terrain mod as it really seems to mess with other game mechanics besides the cheesy earth bridges and stuff.

I could add anti-cheat, but I am whitelisting. I guess I just wanted to give some more trust. Like if you wanted ZenTargeting - I don't really care and also maybe not entirely sure I want to manage that.

I did not add fires/torches staying lit/craft from containers because I think its kind of cheesy and makes an already easy game even easier. Inventory management is a great part of survival games. I didn't go with OP magic, I went with Therzie's Wizadry. Sure, the magic can be a bit stronger but it doesn't exist early-game in Valheim so its hard to balance. Plus, in vanilla you really need nothing but a bow. We're not going to be competing to see who has the most DPS - its just a fun casual playthrough. Mobs are more difficult as the server is on hard difficulty and CLLC adds in more stars with infusions.

So Therzies is extremely OP magic, then you don't want to make an easy game easier....proceeds to add Epic Loot. On my last "Very Hard Difficulty" vanilla setting with maxed settings and bosses set to minimum of 1 star using very high CLLC settings, I could burn the Spider boss down in less than 5 seconds. It was laughable. You have a cart mod that basically makes it a map game, but yeh - don't keep those torches lit that you build paths on. The whole point of a higher difficulty game is to slow progress and make it more challenging, but you're missing the boat quite a bit. I think your basic idea is good, but it's definitely an "easy" server set up you're trying to advertise as more difficulty. Tedious/boring (lot of people including myself like tedious, that's not a knock) maybe, difficult, absolutely not. Perhaps you're advertising to the wrong crowd?

I didn't add EpicLoot. That was in my original post but it is not in my modpack. I agree, it is overpowered, but that it was why I was going to customize it - but its just too much effort for one person so it didn't make the cut. I went with VES instead. My cartography mod doesn't make it a map game. The map is 90k in diameter and the cartography table will explore a 15k diameter over the course of 40 days (one in-game year). You would need to build a lot of tables all over the world with precise accuracy and carry 10+ craftable maps with you at all times. If you want to make pins, you have to add signs into the world and add a special pin to the sign. Its incredibly immersive while adding a reward for the time + effort needed.

I can really only do so much and ultimately did this for myself and for what I consider fun and challenging. I am also an aging father with a big family and a farm, I'm not trying to track my DPS in Valheim if you know what I'm saying. If someone doesn't want to play with me on my server that is totally fine. I'm not sure why you're in here trying to tear apart my work when you could spend the time and money building your own super-duper modpack and hosting your own playthrough.

A 5x world or other 2x+ sized bigger worlds usually cause a very long loading time, even when just connecting as client.
When you write 2x radius in the expand config, you get way more than 2x ingame locations etc to cover (not gonna do maths here).
Can also make take a huge chunk of server RAM. I am not here to criticise, I wish giant worlds were more viable.
Generating them the first time takes ages.

Yeah it took ~30 minutes, but load times are slightly longer than normal for me. I was expecting more memory usage but has not exceed 6GB yet. When using just EWZ, it took a very long time, but for some reason RiverHeim+EWZ did better. I didn't get into the technical details of why, after quite a bit of testing I am quite happy with the world.

Right now about a 30s startup, and maybe 20-25s to join the server.
