I don't wanna take over your post but have you tried playing with 2x resource and above? I find it kind of trivializes the game because of the ridiculous amount of drops you get.
One strategy for hard difficulty id like to try is to have players specialize in equipment and keep inventory really minimal. Specialization does require a large number of players to be present at the same time though and since this is so difficult to pull of most of the time I can understand the logic behind the resource boost.
I also feel like the immersive modifier lets the player really sink into each stage of the game while they explore. Makes the game feel longer and more significant somehow.

Yeah played with 2x resources last playthrough with 2 friends. And is has its pros and cons. But think it will be ok if death penalty is on hard though since you lose all inventory except equipped gear.
