I see many people talking about tickless/subtick in CSGO and wanted to clarify a few details. From what I know about it, it's basically a system to support a variety of strategies to dynamically adjust the rate at which inputs come in from the client to the server:

I was happy with what I was able to achieve, I did well enough to not lose chill even in 1v5 scenarios.

on the topic of csgo competitors, all my mind comes to is valorant, it begs to ask if there's other possible spin on the style of the game
a more casual spin perhaps.
similar mechanics but the general idea being set for people who just want to chill.
when people think csgo competitors they'll probably think of CoD or R6 Siege but they're not even close
and from my personal experience, the only cs clone that managed to stand out was neotokyo.
and that game is dead.
and when looking up competitors there's a fucking crypto nft shooter sitting at the top.
for as many people there are who like csgo there's just as many developers who avoid the style of the game like it will boil their parents
my closest bet now is warface and ironsight but those games are clones of cod.
I love csgo shooting mechanics and the complex simplicity of the movement, but every other shooter has to have ultimates or tactical nukes to be casual.
by all accounts, all csgo does it let you move in 4 directions.
But so does trackmania.
there's so much engine jank that it became its own field.
even crouch jumping can be considered esoteric mechanic because I attempted this in similarly old games (bl2) and it doesn't have it
i think csgo is as casual as it gets
how casual the game is depends on the gamemode youre playing
gamemodes where you dont respawn tend to be more competitive than gamemodes like deathmatch or arms race

The pistols in Counter Strike, compared. Turns out it takes much longer than I expected to get decent side-by-side comparisons like this! I'll work through each of the weapon categories as this kind of footage tends to help me with later videos of mine.

anyway i think this video really hits home the fact that the models are likely finished, but the textures probably aren't
this vid also made me realize just how drastically different the lighting is in s2
I think part of the reason why people think these weapons look cleaner is the way that light interacts with the weapons
like the thing i'm noticing in all these clips is that in cs2, the sky color seems to be taken into account for reflections
honestly, I don't really like the look of the sky color on it, but I do think with improved textures it would be a definite improvement
but it also makes it much harder to do a weapon comparison like this i think
since it can be hard to tell what is different due to model/texture differences, and what is due to lighting differences

This comparison perfectly illustrates what I think is lacking with cs2’s weapon mats
In csgo, the main body is purposely matte, while the barrel is metallic looking
All of the weapon is matte and flat in cs2
Even the color variation on the weapon in cs2 is a lot flatter, csgo had different shades of a black, cs2 is just the same black
This extends to every weapon looking matte, even stuff like the deagle and revolver which you’d think would be pretty shiny

A lot of cheap shotguns have their body parts either made out of wood or plastic, sporting shotguns come to mind.
While UMP45 is designed to be made out of plastic and is meant as a cheap mp5 alternative for the military.

if they are the same albedo textures, then they used phong stuff for a lot of details and/or the UVs are different (benetti logo on the side, white mark on the bottom of the barrel)

as an aside before we get into that, this shotgun in specific has only 2 textures, the albedo and the phong exponent

plus, the phong exponent is definitely doing a lot of work too
when I was dealing with making skins I noticed that some text and logos were overlayed on top of the skin, as a mask, and one technique people employed is to add the text to the skin and invert its polarity to cancel it out.

you're saying that details that they baked into the albedo for cs:go got stripped out to put into other PBR channels, but that hasn't happened yet or is messed up
makes sense, this logo has some shadowing on it and generally sticks out
so I assume they want to put that just in the normal map
for clarity, I think of the phong mask as a separate texture with those "paint by number" groups being split by alpha or brightness.
and then actual settings of the phong are written in code.
side note i couldn't figure out how to strip out the alpha channel correctly so you get vtfedit screenshot
